View Full Version : Feet on the dashboard

Just wondered what other people think of this Okinawan(?) habit, I often
see people in their car, where the passenger has his feet up against the dashboard, and this morning saw a elementary school kid with her feet lying
up against the car window. Talk about sloppy, bad manners..
Do people do this in the US, because they certainly don't do it where I come from?

When I was little we had a jeep, my mom used to sit with her one foot out on the side view mirror bars......
As for feet on the dash, eh yeah, it used to be a habit around the US, now with airbags it is too dangerous (though I still see it from time to time)
It is kind of a "comfort" position, not meant to be disrespectful or bad manners.

If I'm on a long road trip, I will do it.

I plead guilty to doing it.

In the US the only people I real saw doing it was the ones on long trips.
I still don't believe it's worse than OKI's letting their little ones roam the car.

Seen more Americans do it around here than Okinawans. Maybe I need to get out more :D

Purely out of curiosity here, why do you consider it to be sloppy or bad manners to put feet up on the dash?
I have long legs and in some of these small Japanese cars I do it only because there is no other place to stick them, well except outside the window.:w00t:.
And if I did that I would probably be arrested for having weapons of mass destruction. :barf:  :dead:

Just looks sloppy to me, I mean who wants to look at someone's feet
sticking out of the window!
Guess it's just the british in me, nobody would ever do that there.
Probably get pulled over and reprimanded for it:eek:

You could always just not look at them. I mean no reason to be looking in other peoples cars anyway right? I don't like it either though. Feet belong on the floor.

Well, I am not really making a point of looking into other people's cars, they just catch the corner of my eye, that is how it came to my attention.
Esp. if it is the car stopped right next to you at the traffic lights.
Don't you ever sneak a look at the people in the car next to you when you
are stopped at the traffic lights. DrP.:D
(sorry, way too much time on my hands today..)

Why would someone get reprimanded for it even in GB? Is there a law against it?
I also undersand when you say that it is hard not to notice when the car pulls up next to you. I dont do it often but there are times that I really have no choice, particularly in some types of Kei cars.

Well, I just said 'probably', I am sure there is no law against it.
But you would probably get a dirty look for doing it, cos it is not 'proper'
etiquette.

I've seen the feet on the dash and out the window often. I think it's more a warm weather place thing to do. "It's island style brah!" :shakka: From what I've experienced, it's common in SoCal, especially around the beaches, and Hawaii. Since Okinawa is an island with a heavy "island style", it's very common practice. It's not safe, but comfort isn't always safe in 90F degree, 95% humidity weather. Heh.
