i think ive heard about alot of different castles on island.
Are there any that are particularly good and how can i find them?
A close one that I thought was pretty cool and close to Foster is Nakagusuku (I think). Go straight out the Legion gate, take the next left after the one that goes to the expressway. Follow that street maybe 4 km's and you'll come to it on the right.

i just find them by following the signs. The best i think i've seen as far as spectacular view is Zakimi in Yomitan.
Nakagusuku by foster is pretty cool too.
My favorite experiences have been just out exploring. Whether by bus, car, bicycle, walking, running......just out checking out random streets and areas.
The fish market on Heiwa Dori (Canjap mentioned) is pretty entertaining. They like to talk to gaijin in there too. One old lady always tries to get me to track down her man that left her in the fifties..
Random Izakayas are always fun..
And last but far from least, babe-watching! I damn-near get whiplash daily here!

The islands on the East, Ikei & Miyagi (you can get to by bridge) have lots of cute soba shops, veggie stands & beaches off the beaten path. easiest to explore by car or bike.

abonifi1 what so wrong with kokusai dori fish market, shikina koen, eating goat and turtle with my hatagashira buddies?
Katsuren is nice. I live pretty close to that as well so I go up there every now and then. I ran across the Nakijin ruins by accident last week. It's up north near Motobu. I just drove by, but it looked pretty cool from the road. It's also a real nice drive through the mountains and there are some pretty sweet views.

The good beaches are becoming pretty scarce these days. There used to be an awesome little sleepy village in Ada I believe but now it's all concrete blocks.
Miyagi Jima has a couple of free beaches that are off the beaten path but kind of difficult to find.
Kouri Island and Yagaji Island are also nice places. As of about 6 months ago Kouri Island still had a kick ass free beach on the noth side but it looked like they were getting ready to start building there.
Most of the places I know were found by days of driving and exploring but you can save a lot of time if you are looking for nice secluded beaches by google earth and using satelite view.
Down around Nanjo City along HWY 331 there are lots of cool spots. Just follow the landmark signs.
Best advice as suggested earlier is to make a day or two out of it pick a general area and just explore. Pack up a cooler for drinks and snacks along the way, bring a camera take your time and enjoy!

Lots of favorite experiences.
I liked to walk the back streets of Koza during the wee hours of the night by myself. I never knew what I might run into or what might happen. This, while not a favorite experience, is none the less, an experience I had one night.
It was after midnight and the B. C. St. bars were closed.
I was walking down Gate 2 St., close to where the Gate 2 Garage is now, when a fight broke out between some GI's and Okinawan's. I decided to stop and watch. All of a sudden I found myself being slammed into a doorway. I'm thinking, Oh Shit, I'm being dragged into it. I suddenly realize that the person who slammed me into the building is my buddies girlfriend. I never did asked her if she ever played football. :D She and her friends saw what was going on and she was afraid that I would be drawn into the fight, so she, as drunk as she was, was going to make sure I didn't become part of the fight.
The fight ended as quickly as it started. I asked her what she was doing on Gate 2 St. She told me that she and some friends were going to buy some food and then go back to her place when she saw the fight and saw me. She asked me join them.
Two cars pulled up to the curb. The back door on one of the cars opened and she told me to get into the car. I got into the car and the car took off, with me and a bunch of strangers. My buddies girlfriend wasn't with us. I'm thinking WTF is going on here, did I get into the wrong car? The car is racing down neighborhood streets that were illuminated only by the cars headlights.
The car suddenly stopped in the middle of an intersection and I'm told to get out. Then the car sped away. WTF. There I am standing in the middle of an intersection not knowing where I am and it's pitch black out.
Suddenly I hear a car and see lights coming around a corner a block away. The car pulled over and parked in front of an apartment. I started walking towards the cars lights. People get out of the car and start motioning to me to come their way. As I get closer, I see it's my buddies girlfriend and her friends. What a relief. I still don't know why they dropped me off in the middle of the intersection. I could have understood it had I farted in the car, but I didn't.
Inside the apartment the girls started cooking some fried rice Which they placed in a large bowl in the middle of the table. It was pretty good. My buddies girlfriend wanted to know where her boyfriend was and kept insisting that I take her to him. I told her he was at his place sleeping and that he would be upset if she, in her present condition, disturbed him. She insisted that I take her to his place. I said no, but if you have ever tried to say no to a drunken Okinawan female who is determined to have her way, you will understand that there is no way I was going to win, and so we all piled into one car and headed from Koza to Machinato and my buddies place, where we woke up my buddy, who took it all in stride, and we proceeded to party for the rest of the night.

I'll never forget this one time during the summer, when I drove up to Zampa (Zanpa?) Beach and took some pictures of the ocean. And about 20 feet away were a group of Okinawan school kids, apparently on a class trip down there. They looked at me and all waved at the same time saying "HELLLOOOOO!" I figured, maybe the people here aren't so bad after all. Silence doesn't necessarily = dislike in this culture.

Must be something about your personality or presence. I remember this one girl in Korea, definitely the prettiest and most fashionable one there, but her silence and serious composure made her unapproachable, I guess. Even all the fuglies were getting talked to because they were louder. Fortunately I had enough balls to talk to her and ended up dancing with her for hours.

My first night on Okinawa we journeyed out into town. Leaving JRC which was back by where JSVRO is now I almost got hit by a samurai honcho when I looked the wrong way crossing the road.
We ended somehow up on Futenma Hill looking for a bar called Noahs Arc and stumbled (literally) upon a Japanese snack club grand opening. They welcomed us in and we drank the rest of the night for free.
We eventually found Noahs Arc on a different adventure.
The snacks kicked ass back then. If you could use chop sticks, eat shashimi and sing any of the five or six English songs in the Karaoke book you had it made. I think the songs were "Yesterday", "Green Green Grass of Home", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", "When the Saints Go Marching In" and "Happy Birthday".
At that time karaoke was a glorified 8 track tape deck. Each tape held 8 instrumental mono tracks and the song books had the lyrics.
Many of the older Okinawans I encountered then did not show much love for the Japanese. We tried to go into a snack once with a JSDF soldier from the mainland and he was not welcome. The locals definately got the shit end of the stick during the war.
I also ran into an older gentleman one evening who claimed to be a Japanese sub-mariner during the war. He said that he was held captive by the Soviets and later turned over to US forces run POW camp. After that he would always buy me drinks and when he learned I was a Marine would always say that Marines were Americas' samurai.

Anyhow, about half-way up the street, on the right was a bar who's band covered the Doors hits VERY well. I remember them playing "The End" and going completly OFF!!
The whole band snakedanced thru the bar with the drummer on someones shoulders.
At the time, it was an awesome experience for this GI.
Also eating sushi after hours in Naminoue, I think it was $.25/piece, mmmmmmm!

Man oh man, the snack bars have certainly changed, from what I've seen. The economy in Okinawa has improved a lot since then and a lot of G.I-friendly bar districts are now ghost towns or straight up closed. Guess they don't really need our $ that much anymore. :-|
I remember sneaking out as a young devilpup to a snack in Gushikawa that was Japanese only. But, the locals let me drink there anyway and chatted with me in the best English they could muster. It was pretty cool.

In every place I have been, I have almost always had the best and most memorable times when I ventured off alone off the beaten path.
I can still weasle my way into most snacks if I put my mind to it. Well... up until about 6 or 7 years ago anyway. Sometimes the chicks in the places that you had to put up a fight to get in turned out to be pretty damn good. Once they realize that your not going to rape them and steal their money they tend to open up pretty well.

My favorite times on Okinawa were the few times a year when the weather was just perfect, not too hot with a cool ocean breeze going and having a back yard BBQ with friends and family or hanging out downtown with friends and bar hopping until the morning hours. Okinawa was a good time, but I never saw the sightseeing side of the Island as anything super special.

Similar to canjap02,
Last summer, me and a mate rented mama-chari's and cycled from Nago down to Manza beach. There's a bike path that goes all the way and it's pretty smooth and on the flat...
Coming back, we stopped off at the Helios rum distillery and sampled their delights - needless to say, we were a bit swervy but we got back to our hotel safe and sound...

Oh yeah, and my first TC1E Jaunt. I'll never forget...the damn thing was moving so fast, we went from TC3, to TC1 within 6 hours of it dropping to TC3.
Anyway, it was ladies night that night, and my friend suggested that we would be a lot luckier if we went to ladies night on a night where all the GI's would be deep in a Typhoon party.
So we hopped in the skyline and proceeded to Naha, towards a little spot called Slum (now relocated to Saicolo). MAN was he right. At about 12 midnight - 1230, it was packed with girls, and other than me and my wingman, there were about 7 other dudes there...but they worked there.
So yeah we were getting top shelf.
The great part come next when these two girls came up and started the convo with me. One was really interested in me while the other was wondering about my friend. So we went to the second floor for some drinks and whatever. The one in my ear says, lets hit the hotel. Cool.
Yeah, i didnt have any cash, but she was like "drive my car, i'm drunk". Ok, i'm down. Shouldnt be drunk driving...let alone during a typhoon. No money for a hotel, so the closest overpass did just as nicely.
Meanwhile, my wingman, took down her friend in the stairwell. He was a much more ballsy fellow than myself.
End of the night huddle: We went to Cocos and bragged over Level 5 torikatsu. Glad he didnt leave me on base...i wouldn't have gotten laid.
Moral of the story: Never leave a wingman behind.

It's kinda silly but when I took my daughter to the beach one weekend we saw a big Sea horse, a bunch of Puffer Fish and a eel all within 30 minutes and she thought it was just the coolest thing ever. I've never seen her smile so big. Haven't seen an eel or sea horse since though.

My favorite thing to do on island was be at the airport, getting ready to leave. The island itself wasn't bad, some of the people weren't so bad, some of the weather wasn't so bad, I did not enjoy my command. Taken seperately I don't think it would have been so big a deal, but together...
Anyway, don't mind this post. There are plenty of great things to do. I liked just being alone and staring at the sea. It's been a crap day and I'm just bitching.

I like Okinawa better because it isn't as costly, you can smoke indoors in a lot of places, and there aren't mean ass Samoans running around, and you can be 20 to drink (or, if you're a gaijin, let's face it, age doesn't matter) vice 21. Oh yeah, and I have yellow fever because, uh, I dunno, I just do.
Sure I can't really talk with people, but it's not as if I talk to strangers anyway unless I have to, so it's all good.

Most of what people say is bullshit anyway. If you can or can't understand the lies coming out of their traps I don't see it making much difference as long as you enjoy the company.

^ Yeah. Everybody gets too wrapped around the wheel about the "honest intentions" of that person. Especially in Japan, where people commonly lie to each other to feel better. Who cares? Not like I'm trying to interrogate the mf.

In other words, your oversized gaijin genitalia ruined her and she can't find a suitor. :smile4:
Kidding. But I remember asking my ex what she thinks of black gaijin. She said, 'no thanks.' I asked why, to which she replied..."once you go black, you never go back", referring to her special place. LOL

Neo Park in Nago is lots of fun. Its similiar to a zoo where most of the animals walk freely around the park where you walk. They sell little food bags so you can feed the animals while you travel around. Mostly birds, but the pink flaminco are my favorite! They also have train ride that you ride around the park on if you want.
The other place you can check out is the cave on the end of Yoshibaru Island. To get there drive like you are going to White beach. When you see rt. 10 take a left. When you come the stop light before the big bridge that goes out to Henza, Miyagi, and Ikei Island take a right until you see the little rounded bridge crossing over to another small island. The paved road only travels a little ways before it turns into what appears to be a farm rd. Continue straight on the farm rd. until you reach the end. Get out of the car and walk though the opening in the bushes and look to you right. There is an amazing cavern here that had a history in okinawa. Some okinawans believe the first Okinawan lived here. The oldest pottery ever found in Japan was found in this cavern and along the beaches. Although there are some farms on rd, nobody lives on the island. The few attempts to build a house here resulted in the house burning up so okinawns believe that the spirit of the cave wants to enjoy the piece and prosperity of the island all to itself.
Hope that helps

Going to the anzuya in ginowan city (near the town hall, it's not there anymore) and drinking as much as possible in two hours for only 980 yen............oh and the chicken namban was the shit:thumbup:
When my wife and I went to the ginowan city hall to turn in our marriage paperwork at midnight on march 3rd..........the guard was sleeping:D
Drinking with the inlaws at irori tei (probably spelled wrong) in haebaru was always fun. Especially since it was two blocks from their house so we could just stumble back to their house.
Oh and the wedding after party in the matsuyama area. Watching my brother-in-law try to get my aunt's drunk was hilarious:thumbup:

I found a glass ball along that beach by the cave w hile back. I went back to that cave a couple times with different friends about four years ago and there was some old Okinawan dude there did't speak much English but was cool as hell. Evidently that is a pretty spiritual place for many Okinawans. Something about a white dragon and god but I really don't remember the datails. The dude was a trip though. He would just look at us and tell us something that there was no way he could have known about.
IIRC just as you are crossing the bridge if you look off to the right was one of the most awesome views I remember seeing on Okinawa.

That was my rifle range tradition. The night before qual day I would knock down two bottles of mojo and a couple beers to be good and relaxed for the firing line.
Probably get crucified for doing that now...

Almost forgot about that. My 22nd birthday in 1968.
I arrived at the Bar Kinbasha one night to find out that they had planned a surprise birthday party for me complete with cake and gifts. I was totally surprised. That was really nice of them to do that.

I hear you GarryK. If I had been more mature, I would have married my Okinawan love.
She was kind and had a good heart- this I know. I briefly talked to her 2yrs ago on the phone, but life goes on...aye?
That said, I sure loved Okinawa and hope to visit again- maybe live out the rest of my life in some coastal village in the north >> check out this youtube Okinawa travel Series>> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXjRhpBhpks&feature=PlayList&p=862C03683A43AB98&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=4

My best experience(s) has been simply seating on my back balcony and watching the sunset with my family. The fact that Okinawa is so peaceful and I don't have to worry about the crimes the plague the U.S. such as gun shootings and gangs activity. I truly appreciate the peaceful living Okinawa has and find it a great place to raise a family.

Wow, that's a shock. That was a sad story how they beat that kid. Hopefully parents and teachers can prevent or at least reduce this type of action in the future. How did your nephew feel about this?
