When you bought your house out here is it under your name or you're wife's name.
Mrs. Burns says it can't be in my name 'cause I'm a gaijin.
I'm pretty sure Americans can own a house here.
I'd like to clear this up.

foreigners can own property in japan
I don't know if there is a special anti american thing for okinawa, but generally you should be able to.
She is probably referring to banks not lending to gaijin easily.

I knew a GS civilian on Kadena that was not allowed to buy one of the Corps of Engineers houses in Awase in 1986. He was not married to a Japanese or Okinawan lady. In his case, a loan was not needed. He was to pay cash in full. He told me that Americans cannot purchase a house or property in Okinawa, unless they have an Okinawan or Japanese spouse. I don't know if things have changed since then.

My husband (Japaneses) and I (gaijin - not American) built a house last year. As we took the loan for both of us we also have our house on both names. The good thing about taking a loan on both of us is the insurence that if one of us dies earlier than in 35 years, the other person only pays back the second half. Actually they gave us the loan because I had a job for 4 years at the same place. I have a permanent visa.

My wife just got the loan for our house. I can PM you the info and phone number of the guy. He said he wants me to steer him more business.
His realty service goes thru a bank they own stock in. Much easier to get the money since they can press them a little harder.
Yeah, it sounds crazy but I was talking to my struggling brother at lunch and I kinda miss those days livin' on the edge..
Honestly, I don't though and am better off now..
I'd help him if I could..

like I said - it may be an american thing.
But generally a Japanese bank will want stability (same job for 4 years or so, married) to make sure you won't do a runner.
I applied for a loan about 2 years back. Had 3+ years with a law firm in Tokyo under my belt, and the first thing the guy asked was if I was married. Not how much I could afford, not how much I was getting paid - which was very decent, but if I was married.
