Mediatti is touting a new upgrade to their lines (no promise of better speeds) and are also announcing on the radio that they will terminate service for any one found (ACCUSED) of downloading pirated files.

Another abusive nail in the coffin for on-base folk internet usage.
Thank my stars I have NTT fiber

However, I am awaiting the flood of stories of people pissed off about this and wonder how many are going to get shut off.

I guess if no one is going to bittorrent that ought to free up all the limited cable bandwidth. :scratchchin:

Why don't these gimps just leave?

probably because of a huge contract and it is almost impossible to remove them or to put it a better way lets say they were removed and another company had to come in and figure our what Mediatti's infrastructure was and how they were running the system? can you imagine the outrage of a total black out if even for a day?

The fact that they will punish anyone that download torrents pisses me off. If they just stayed up to the "2 days off" delayed programming they said they would, most people wouldn't need to download TV shows like we do. I mean thsi really pisses me off!

So who wants to fill up my 1T external with TV shows and music for me?

I still for the life of me don't understand why Mediatti gives a shit if people download or not.

Thaw awesome. Assrape your customers who happen to be military and their families so you can scratch the backs of big business.

Really nice. NOT!

**** you Mediatti. I still say all you cats on base should boycott those bitches. That'll teach em to get their heads out of their asses or they'll go tits up and get replaced by hopefully a better company.

Yes, when Mediatti took over for Americable, they signed an exclusive 15 year franchise agreement. That's the only reason when the residential phone service went to AAFES/Verizon, it didn't go "triple play" phone/net/tv, like other Pacific bases, due to the contract Mediatti had in place. Expect when that expires (several years from now) for there to be one company with the triple play. Also be advised it will most likely be AAFES led as they have first right of refusal, which explains how they contracted out Verizon and all other bids were squashed.

Mediatti is FTL! The funny thing is those fools don't even do much. They contract locals off base to do the real work. I've done some jobs for them. But I got big money to do it so no complaints. I just find it funny.

I hear they pay good as well. Any truth to this?

What kind of big money did you get? I knew a guy who did tech support for them and the pay wasn't that great according to him. He gladly switched to a pretty low paying off-base job, if that tells you anything.

Base folk can't really boycott them. People need their internet...

I am sure that the people at the IG will step in and not allow your "privaleges" to be suspended based on a meer accusation. Of course, without probable cause and a search warrant no agency will monitor our internet activities. Not to worry. What you do in your home is your business. :clear19:

IIRC, if you are busted downloading, you and your provider are notified, several US cable internet companies/ providers have bandwith caps in place and if you go over the allowed amount , 1st offense you receive a letter, 2nd offense service is terminated for a year. I can see how, mediatti would do this and the IG would back them...time for yall to move off base...oops too late.:grin1:

100 bucks says mediatti terminates nobody. They want your money more than they want to protect Intellectual Property laws.

As for the bandwidth capping stuff, I believe that only Comcast is suspending service for breaking the cap. Most of the other service providers are charging a dollar amount per gigabyte over the cap. Again, generally a mechanism to make money; the fact that it happens to be a mild deterrent against excessive downloading is only a side effect.

I agree but if you get the letter, then you dont have leg to stand on as far an argument or complaint to the IG. THere was another story I read also talking about the$ amount that they would charge you per DL, I cant remember if it was over the cap or just per dl.......also that they would allow you to purchase sometype of upgrade to cover DL' caps
which IMHO is fed up especially for 360/ps3 gamers that dl large files or lg amount of files

the way i understand it is the are going to be able to see who is downloading a crazy amount of files and running servers or other high bandwidth stuff from their system...

to me i am kind of glad because if you live next door to someone with a crazy setup who is downloading 100 gigs a week than your connection is ******... meaning my xbox live experience is lagging...

i am all for them improving the network...

if i hear too many horror stories though i will cancel and use konnect..

This is BS though. Internet service is supposed to be a set rate per month. You should be able to do what you want and get the most of the service.

If their network is ****** they should do something about it to improve it instead of "rationing" bandwith.

Quit Mediatti, GO TO SOFTBANK!! and get the new "Softbank C01SW (thumb drive internet modem)" the unlimited internet plan is 4000 yen a month and you can use it anywhere, its is 7.2 Mbps, I believe Mediatti is less than 5 Mbps (correct me if im wrong). Im not saying Im bragging or anything but my internet off base is like 100 Mbps and I also use my jailbroken Iphone to tether internet (until softbank catches me) while Im away from WiFi. I had Mediatti and Konnect when I lived on base and they were terrible, you had so many people using the bandwidth during peek hours that you cant even use a search engine. F THAT!! dont pay for that garbage, if anyones needs help or advice about alternative internet, I been around the block and I love to help. so just message me.

How do you effectively filter for copyrighted content?... Or illegitimate material... In terms of bits, there is no difference between child porn, a picture of Jesus, or child porn embedded into a picture of Jesus... Unless there's some super high tech imaging filters out now that I've never heard of, I don't see how this would be possible right now.

My co-worker talked about the new "upgrade" over the weekend and it seems as though his network connection is no longer directly connected cloud anymore. Instead of pulling an IP address for his gateway he gets a computer name instead. As if there is some sort of pseudo domain controller running the mediatti net. But if thats the case I would highly suggest anyone who is thinking of any downloading shenanigans might want to think twice because they are likely running a packet sniffer I would bet.

Mediatti was aquired by some "Undisclosed Acquiror" around a year ago. They have been doing shady stuff ever since. I'm sure if someone wanted to, time and energy, they could question some stuff, get some proof, dig a little deep into their public records and pull something to give to the IG (or above) and BAM! No more contract.

A little bit of insight of how ISPs setup contracts with bases:

Officials: Larger circuit to provide air base with uninterrupted access

By Teri Weaver (weavert@pstripes.osd.mil), Stars and Stripes
Pacific edition, Tuesday, October 27, 2009

TOKYO — By the end of November, the Internet at Misawa Air Base should be on-line all the time, according to officials from the Army and Air Force Exchange Service.

In the next few weeks, Verizon will install a 70 percent larger circuit in the Tokyo area, according to Andrew Weaver, an assistant vice president with AAFES.

The change will mean all on-base Internet users can expect a constant connection that runs at up to 12 megabits per second.

More importantly, it means the Internet connection should work at that speed during peak hours, no matter how many people are downloading their favorite TV show or playing online video games, Weaver said.
“I would have liked it to be done sooner,” Weaver said in a telephone interview last week from AAFES’ Dallas headquarters. “There’s just a lot of moving pieces.”

The five-year contract with Verizon began last spring, part of an effort to privatize on-base phone service at Air Force bases worldwide, Weaver said. Because the phone lines at Misawa also carry the Internet access — on a line called a digital subscriber line, or DSL — officials had to look for a provider for both services.

Military officials had hoped to use the timing of the change to provide more parity for Internet speed throughout the base, Weaver said. Under the old system, homes with Internet hookups north of the flight line got only 1.5 mbps, compared with 12 mbps on the rest of base.

But when Verizon took over this spring, the increased speed meant more people were downloading more information — especially after dinner and before bedtime, Weaver said. That increased use clogged the system, he said.

Enlarging the circuit took months, Weaver said, because Verizon had to work with multiple Japanese utilities and companies, then order and install the equipment.

In June, all Verizon subscribers were given a free month of Internet, normally a $60.99 charge, Weaver said.

Despite the need for the larger circuit, Verizon has met its contract obligations, Weaver said.

I don't have all the facts but it looks like Mediatti should take ownership of their shitty service and the contracting squadron should be punishing them for not making them hold up their end of the bargain to provide high speed access.

They should also be hung up by their balls upside down since they also promised only a 48 hours delay on AFN programming from state side airings. The only reason I download is because they do not air the shows I watch on time.

simple, if they are getting on board with the BS go9ing on in the states....they can 1. if you are tagged as a big downloader, they can track your ip address back to the site
2. you get busted DLing anything that is being monitored, they will send you and your ISP a letter, telling you why you you received the letter and to stop DLing crap
