When I first came to Okinawa I thought sweet beans was a very strange dessert. But like most other cuisine I developed a taste for it and now love it. My favorite variation is topped with shaved ice, mochi and green tea flavoring or like I had recently, Goya flavoring.
The Goya Zenzai I had was at the Naha airport on the first floor. It's also the best Zenzai I've ever had. A bit of a drive but if you like Zenzai, hit the airport. The ice is so soft, a perfect consistency.

I gave it a chance, and while it's not as nasty as natto, it's not that great either. I can deal with it in paste form in a pastry, but not on shaved ice.
See, my brother likes the paste in the pastry or mochi, but I really like it like this a lot better.
And Godz, you're nutz man! Absolutely zero comparison.
I can eat Natto if forced or mixed with ume in a maki or something but I really think it's nasty!

I know plenty about Japanese food and no offense to anyone here - I think most of it sucks donkey balls. Beans have no place being in deserts. But thats just what I think.

I know American don't eat sweet bean. My cousin's hasband who is American said it's not dessert. :D
Can't wait to go all the way back to the airport this weekend. Just for some Zenzai, that's how good this shit is!

Zenzai is ******* disgusting. In fact most Okinawan/Japanese food IMHO either sucks or is okay but bland and flavorless.
I love soba and a few foods but most of it gets the thumbs down.
I do like bentos.
Back to the OP, zenzai is horrible.
Zenzai by itself, not so much...accompanied by shaved, flavored ice, mochi, cream FTW. It's kinda like Italian/Hawaiian Ices just with added bonuses.
Yes, it does......to the untrained eye....:)

Dude, to each his own. I do have an open mind and have tired them. Not a fan of the cold beans. Not a fan of most Japanese/Okinawa food, just not my thing. I guess I spent too much time in Europe and my taste buds have develop a perfence for that type of food.
Just bored, didn't mean to be pushy :). I expected a worse response actually LOL.
I used to think Zenzai, Goya, Sushi, Mochi, even Ume, Daikon and Ginger were disgusting! I developed a taste for them luckily cause they're prevalent here.
Natto is nasty!

Zensai isn't bad. It's more of an acquired taste. I could think of worse things they could put on shaved ice!

I fresh handmade mochi GT. Not the packaged kind. Yes, I know the bean paste inside is the same. :)
I don't mind it. It has grown on me but my husband hates just about any type of bean so he stays away from it.

Best mochi I had was at a sakura festival. It was the green tea kind with the bean paste still slightly warm on the inside and it had a huge, perfect, ripe strawberry on top. It was fresh, handmade food at it's finest.

There are a lot of kind mochi, but most of them has sweet beans.
sweet beans has type that strained bean paste and grain bean(right word?)
I like strained bean paste. :)

I wish I could thank you multiple times Richard Burns, Goya tastes like a baby pine tree, my wife always finds sneaky ways for me to eat it like sticking it in my rice and cooking it with yakiniku and she even deap fried it, the aftertaste always kills me and I have to drink straight jaigermeister to get that taste out of my mouth

Yep, it was always in the big bentos we had for shimi. My wife's aunt used to make it all the time as well:thumbup:
