Do you remember when the Segway Scooter debut a couple years ago? I remember thinking that this was really cool and that it would affect personal transportation on some level. However, it hasn't.

I still hold out hope for it, but I have to say I am disappointed that it hasn't really dripped down to the average consumer yet. I hope it doesn't die.

I remember when D. Letterman zipped around on it in his studio and outside the Ed Sullivan Theatre when it came out.

Gave me an image that the Jetsons Era had arrived in public transportation -- without the flying cars, of course.

Has anyone actually seen one in real life, or even better, ridden on one?

I think the price range of them are like $3,000. At what price would you consider buying one?

The only time I've ever seen one was in Weird Al's "I'm just too white and nerdy" remake of that Charmillionaire track "Riding Dirty" or whatever the title is.

They are actually trying to market an off road version now. I read about it in the paper a few weeks back. I think the general idea of the thing is not that bad. I'd like to try one out sometime.

It hasn't affected personal travel because it's lame. Sure it's a cool idea and might be fun to ride but no one wants to drive that thing around. Sorry I'll walk before I get on a segway. Remember once razor scooters first came out and everyone thought people would be using them to get to work. Hop off the train or bus and hop on your razor. Only thing is scooters are for 5 year olds, not some business executive. A segway just shouts 'nerd' once you ride it, and image is everything to most people.

I did see an article somewhere that gave directions on how to make your own for cheaper.

I second this notion. Segways have "dweeb" written all over them. Maybe if they created them to have a real trendy high-tech look that college kids got off on they'd take the world by storm, but I doubt it and I don't see how that would be possible.

It looks like a box cart for humans.

lol.

I think they look just fine. The only reason I wouldn't want one now is because they are so rare they would targeted for theft. But then that should make it easier for the police to spot a stolen one.

The odds that the one they see zipping by are pretty good for it being the stolen one, and after they catch this person, throw him in jail, and if more aren't stolen, we know they got the right thief <wink> -- not to mention the right Segway if the serial number matches.

I want one.

Maybe if they did about 100 clicks then I'd buy one.

oh and if they didn't look so lame.

Sorry I'll take a nice sports car over a segway any day. Sure I can't drive it on the sidewalk, but I'll get more girls with a corvette

I'd still take a motorcycle (for the road) and a moped (for the parks) over one of these any day of the week if I decided I didn't want to drive a car anymore. Aside from that, I can walk. You're going to have a hard time convincing me that these aren't geeky. :p

Weird Al wouldn't have included one in his video if they weren't!

WEIRD AL DOES NOT LIE.

The girls I have always dated and liked me for who I was, not what my car looked like.

Jump on the Segway girls. We are going for a nerdy spin to the love hotel. If you can't fit, then jogg behind us. I'll keep it slow so you can keep up. <excell lectric humming, gyroscopes a poppin baby!>

Faster Mariko! It's your turn to pay, baby!

OMG hahahahaha... I can already imagine some Japanese chick chasing you riding your segway all the way to the motel, wearing your pocket protector, sipping a cup of tea.

same here I never had a nice car and I still got the ladies!

You can't even take your date for a ride on a segway.

That's ok, because by the time they catch up and are out of breath, we are at the love hotel, and that is when I AM the ride!

Do you think one of these bad boys would be powerful enough to tow a wagon? That might work.

Noooo comment. lol.

ha ha I like that good one prosecutor.

hell yeah dk! Pull up to a girl and say "hey baby how about a ride in my radio flyer?" Oh and throw some dubs on the segway too! Make them sprewells so people think your moving, but your not!!!

in these parts they rent them at all the "snooty-tooty" resort areas. And you see people all over riding them there.

Haven't ever gotten on one personally. I have enough issues with a stationary elliptical or ski machine, I can't even imagine what I might do on an actual moving device! I would hurt myself I am sure.
Besides riding on a motorcycle is much more fun....and I don't have to drive it!

I was teasing I was gonna get a electric scooter....then we laughed when we realized I couldn't leave our housing area because every main access in or out is a hwy. Unless I wanted to take the "scenic" route.....
Talk about having to go the long indirect route all the time.....what ever you saved zipping around on one of those would be spent in time wasted having to go the LONG way around.

I would so totally ride one!!! Unfortunately though it would not be practical being there is no where close enough to ride it too without getting on main roads. I guess you could use it to go for walks...though...that just might slightly cancel out the health benefits of going for a walk in the first place.

LOL

Only sort of!!!

It would be going for a nature ride, not a nature walk

So there was an article recently in the paper here......some of the police are now using these in dense shopping areas / outdoor concert type areas. Helps them get around faster, gives a better vantage point & gets more people aware of them.
Not as geeky as bike police, I guess. :)

I dunno...I think a cop on a segway is pretty darn geeky! :) But why not, I mean we already have typical patrol men in cars, on bikes, and even some that ride horse back. So why not throw one on a segaway in the mix as well.

ha! i'm all sorts of geeky, but not very nerdy. i liked the segway idea at first. then i saw the rascal, etal. those are basically the same thing, but you get to sit down. it's like a moped, but you don't need a license to drive it. yeah, you could even attach a pinwheel to the basket for flair. ;) that's the ticket.

That would be hot!! I could see the police now, attaching an old school blue or red flashing light to pull over speeders on their 50cc scooters. :)

too bad segways don't even have the balls of a 50cc scooter.

Kinda late on this thread, but I was back in the states a couple of months ago and saw rent-a-cops on them at a mall in Atlanta GA. They were wearing bike helmets while riding them.... If you thought someone would like nerdy or geeky imagine it with a helmet.

Found this on another forum I frequent.

More practical uses for the segway...

I just don't see how these things can be seen as anything other than geeky.

Now that is just getting down right lazy! Why not just buy a moped and secure the stroller to the back of it like a trailer? It'd be a little cheaper anyways. And more comfortable then standing the whole time.

The comic strip Pearls Before Swine (http://www.comics.com/comics/pearls/) has started poking fun at the Segway! It is hilarious! Check out the one for 8/27, and then check 8/28 once they update the site...I was rolling!

I love that cartoon!

You know, I think it is wrong to poke fun at Segway scooters and not any other type of wheeled object. :D

Seriously I would never ever buy one or ride one. Why do we need these things anyway? I think what some people need is more walking and less cheeseburgers. Come up with a gadget that gets people moving and is healthy for them... Oh wait they got that already its called walking.

Oh god if the Jetsons Era ever actually arrives in public transportation we'll see more grossly overweight people. Not that we don't see enough of it already. Just thinking about it makes me want to go run another 6 miles:(
