View Full Version : Differences between Okinawa and mainland

Here is one an old Okinawan dude told me about. Haven' been in a mainlanders house so I don't know for certain but I like the story anyway:
Japanese homes have a cerimonial sword on the wall. Okinawan homes have a samisen.
Japanese homes have a computer. Okinawa homes have cellphones. :p
I'm kidding....

If a mainland girl has big boobs then they're probably fake:D:D:D
Honestly, I haven't been in too many Okinawan homes. The only Japanese home I usually ever go to is my wife's parents' house. So... I don't know... Muku would probably be better to answer this question than most of us, and that is not a crack on Muku...
Okinawans don't go out of their way as much as Americans to invite friends over... I think that's just a part of their culture, from what I've seen/heard, so this is a tough question...

For the record, that groan was not about the women comment, it was for the beaches comment.
Okinawa beaches are NOT that nice. I haven't found soft luxurious sand anywhere yet. I have found the kind of coral, rocks, broken shells etc that make you refuse to go barefoot.
Haven't seen any crysal blue water either, for that matter.

Not all of them are twiggy. Some are just small. Which is alright, 'cause I'm a thin guy myself. Too thin is better than too pudgy IMO, and in my book, pretty face trumps T&A (it's a good bonus though).
I will say though, my gf has a pretty good bust size for being a mainlander. :thumbup1:

Okinawa SUX!
Mainland ROCKS!!!
Okinawa girls want an American visa.
Mainland girls just want out of thier parents home.
Mainlanders are generally cool and friendly.
Okinawans, are uptight and lazy, not to mention LATE for G.D. EVERTHING!
Mainlanders are stylish and worldly
Okinawans are unsavory and narrow minded
Mainland is Japan
Okinawa is not (stop calling Okinawa, Japan, because it CLEARLY is not!)
Mainland has culture
Okinawa is America, with a cheap teriyaki flavor
Mainlanders marry for love
Okinawans marry for the closest BX
Okinawans depend on the bases for survival but want them out
Mainlanders, don't need the bases, and barely notice the military
Okinawans rob you blind on rent and take the prices beyond the legal limit
mainlanders simply don't care as long as they get the rent on time
Mainland has fast cars
Okinawa has even faster women
Mainland clubs have people who go out to have fun
Okinawa clubs have people ready to kill you for slightly bumping them
Mainland has customer service
Okinawa has well.... not sure what to call half assed attempts to be useful
Honestly I can go on forever, but i'm tired and it's getting late, these opinions do not reflect that of Japan update, only from what myself and a great number others that iv'e spoken to on the subject agree on....

The rest I disagree with, as I don't know enough Okinawans. My only beef with Okinawans is that they're so damn quiet/shy/passive that I wouldn't get to know anybody unless I assert myself like a mother*****er. Mainlanders, in my experience, have always been extremely polite and not as apprehensive.

I have spent time both on mainland and Okinawa (mostly okinawa) The girls are good from both, I all depends were you are looking. Bar rats are never a good thing here or mainland. I find the people here are much nicer then mainland people, but this will mostly depend on the area you are in. Close to a base and most people might not be that nice , farther away and its much better.
I have to agree with P Chan, Im guess SplitD doesnt like Oki cause he sat on his ass and did nothing when he was here. Okinawa is a great place if you can just get past the fact that at first people might not like you cause all they think is military. I dont blame them for this, there are lots of bases here. Mainland doesnt have this problem. You get past the first impression part and the people here are great. You want to have a good time in okinawa get off your ass and get out there and meet some locals, make lots of local friends (not just other military people) and you`ll have a great time here.

In 20+ years, I've played just about every personality you will find on this forum in my love/hate of this island. I have been the 6-12 year old kid picked on for not being Japanese enough. I have been the 13-15 year old kid bored out of my mind because there's nothing to do. I have been the 16-17 year old kid pissed off at the world because you can't drive on this stupid island until you're 20. Then I came back at 20 and played P_chan's role loving the shit out of this island. That lasted three or four years until I realized how utterly different current Okinawans are from their Ryukyuan heritage. That makes me sick. Then, the more I got into programming, the more I realized that this island is AT LEAST seven years behind in my field, which made shopping for books a real pain in the ass. Amazon proved to be a great work-around. And after spending a few years working my ass-off for off-base companies, I came to realize that not only is this damn island so far behind, it is also career suicide and a waste of life to work for off-base business. Now that I'm on-base, at least I've got some awesome bennies (by Okinawa standards... nothing great by US standards), and the pay isn't bad, I'm kind of content, but this island is a severe handicap for anyone who wants to be a serious developer. One can only do so much by himself.
So, yes, I've lived pretty much every member's personality that I've seen on this forum... I've loved this island, I've worn the pink glasses, I've absolutely hated this island on some occasions, and now I'm just apathetic. Guess the Okinawans are finally rubbing off on me.
Okinawa is not all that... Nowhere is, though. You just need to find a place where you are content to live out your days. For me, I haven't found that yet. I want challenges that this island cannot offer me.

I think I can sympathize with SplitD on some of his points (I'm a female and I'm not here for sex, so I disagree with some of what he said). There are things about Okinawa that I find absolutely brilliant (beaches, diving, friendly people, to name just a few), but it does seem limited sometimes. I love to pop over to Tokyo every now and then just to walk around a city. I hate driving. I also go to as many museums as I can when I'm there. I also like that you can easily get to alot of interesting cities on the mainland without having to fly. It's so expensive (not to mention bad for the planet) to get away from Okinawa!
But you know, Okinawa isn't so different from alot of small places, other than the being hard to leave part.

Challenges, moot point.
Spend some time in the states, you'll be begging to come back here.

Michigan reminds me of Okinawa in so many ways.
1, Most of the women look like dependopottomi.
2, Most of the women look like dependopottomi.
3, Okinawa you can't turn left on red Michigan you can't turn left without making a right first...LOL
4, Most of the women look like dependopottomi.
5, The roads in MI SUCK, and the roads in OKINAWA SUCK!!!!!

I take more offense to the fact that you used commas in the place of periods rather than getting in a huff over the MI pot shots. MI does suck but the UP makes up for a little bit of it.

Oh contraire mon frere. I have many times. At least there you have many route options and at certain times light traffic. Here you have a max of 2 route options and the only time you get light traffic is between 10 pm and 7 am.

SplitDecision nailed it, or at least the areas surrounding the military bases. The further you get away, the better impression you're left of Okinawa and mainland.

Japanese Girls=Too tall, whiter than white people, think they're queen shit.
Okinawan Girls=Small, cute, nice natural tan, down to earth.
Both are sexy in their own way but Okinawa ftw!
Okinawa has better food.
Cheaper cost of living.

It's nice to live out away from the bases and the American areas where there are zero gaijin! You do feel like you're in a foreign country.
It's funny how a lot of people only go from base to base (Kadena BX to Foster PX), residence to base, or hang around American village to get there "Okinawan" experience.
I know I guy that was stationed here for 12 years...he left knowing how to say thank you in Japanese.
I go through the love/hate stages all the time too.

Those people are really missing out on a wonderful experience.... R. B. just summed it up.... He sounds like me 45 years ago.... I was fortunate to have spent 3 months in Honolulu, prior to our WESTPAC deployment.... I hung out in an Okinawan neighborhood on King Street, and frequented a bar called the "Nihon Bashi".... The first day I went in there, I went to the juke box and played a famous Okinawan song called "Asotoya yunta".... The owner couldn't believe this young Coastie, who took such an interest in their music and language.... When we got to Oki, I had the time of my life. Biru San :old::grin1:

Anecdotally speaking, the accepted custom for American GIs seems to be 'Okinawans are stationed here with me,' instead of 'I'm stationed in Okinawa.' That attitude is far less common in mainland bases, for whatever reason.

I love okinawa (one Im nowhere near a bases so thats helps) there are many things here I dont like but the two that are big selling points for staying here are 1) OKinawa is like 50 times cheaper then living in mainland 2) the relax atomostphere (sp?) ya okinawa time sucks some times but in genral its just what Im looking for.
And yes the roads suck here, but pay the money and get a motorbike bike licence, then all your driving needs are fixed.

1. What do you consider "nowhere near"? A 15 min drive from base, 30 at most?
2. There are many areas in Mainland that have prices dead on with Okinawa, not all of mainland is downtown tokyo.

Ya true nowhere on this island isnt near a base, more what I mean is I live in an area where I might see another gaijin 3 or 4 times a year. I dont have to interact with the military/sofa people on a day to day base.
And yes there is parts of mainland that can be cheap, But I think we were talking more about city life, like we all live here. In that case `most` of the time mainand is more exspeniuve i.e rent, parking, land, food etc

Don't know about that...the sailors up in mainland can sometimes get just as drunk and rowdy and "we won WWII so ***** you!" as the Marines down here. I've seen it on the trains when I was up there only a few weeks ago. I think Okinawans are just more sensitive to that kind of behavior from foreigners, as they have a history of feeling "victimized" from any outsiders. Mainlanders seem to think "oh haha, crazy drunk foreigners, how cute."
Also consider mainland is much, much, much larger than Okinawa as far as well, everything. As a result, a relatively low percentage of people are going to care about the bases in mainland, compared to the percentage of people that care about the bases in Okinawa.

Also interesting to note, my gf mentioned negative stereotypes about different branches in the military that she heard:
Marines like to rape,
Sailors like to murder,
Soldiers like to steal,
Airmen like to molest.
I told her I'd rape her and she called me stupid. lol
