I know yakuza usually have their hand in a lot of things to get legit money aside from their not-so-legit earnings. How visible are these guys? They're not like the movies, and DEFINITELY not like mainland.

Why do you ask?
They do a lot in loansharking and blackmarket (liquor, cigs, etc) not as glamourous as one might think

If people owe them money and don't pay up they'll beat the living crap out of them with baseball bats.

True, they used to use karatemen too..they will try to recruit young strong gaijin for collector and enforcer duty..no bats necessary:thumbdown:

Prostitution too. A small yakuza family owns Yoshihara.

Better to steer clear of them dudes. They are like athletes foot. Once you got it it always comes back.

If a dude looks and acts like Yakuza he probably isn,t. There are a lot of scum bag wannabees running around who try to act all badass.

A few families own a few shacks. Some are non Yakuza as well.

I haven't hear crime of Yakuza in Okinawa these days, but there are a lot in mainland.

The laws that went into effect a number of years ago have made it difficult for the Yakuza to openly operate as they once did in the past. Any open display of being a Yakuza could be grounds to be detained by the police for suspected illegal activity.

Many of the Yakuza quit, and many of the guys that had their pinkies cut off have had cosmetic surgery to replace their missing digit(s).

That is one of the reasons that people have seen an increase of tattoo parlors openly operating throughout Japan. In the past tattoo's were pretty much the realm of the Yakuza but now for the most part the younger generation here dont know about or havent heard much about the Yakuza.

I was living in Naha less than 100 meters from where one of the guys was murdered during the war that erupted here between different factions of Yakuza. Most of their main offices were patrolled and guarded by police 24/7 for what seemed like 2 years or so. The cops had check points set up all over the place.

The Yakuza have gone underground and like someone else posted here previously the one's that you think "look" like Yakuza most likely are not. They are just chimpirra.

The real question is do they have a Hatori Hanzo sword? Yachimaina~~~~

If they have a sword used by the historical figure Hattori Hanzo, then that would make my day. I would love to know how such a piece of Mainland history ended up in Okinawa though.

Hatori Hanzo was an Okinawan sword maker on Kill Bill vol. 1

Never knew there was a real one. Cool! :D

Hattori Hanzo was a Ninja leader in the 1500s in the Iga area of Japan. Tokugawa Ieyasu struck a deal with him for safe passage when he had to pass through once, and then made him chief of his secret police when he came to power after the battle of Sekigahara.

I am starting a Yakuzza family here in Okinawa. We will be based out of the Sunabe area and our main purpose is drinking beer, having fun, checking out hot Japanese girls and plenty of shit talking. There will be a weekly Friday night meeting in our Dojo (also know as the HR) where said beer drinking and shit talking will take place. As a act of loyalty to our Yakuzza family all new members are required to run the length of the sea wall, buck naked with a empty beer box on your head, screaming “Look at my pee-pee!!”. All potential members are encourage to bring swords, wear a protective cup and dress in a ninja, Jedi, Strom Trooper, or any other type of bad ass garb. Anyone interested please send an email to want2Bninja@lameass.com

But there is a lot of mainland-hype about Okinawan yaks - there's that PS3 game Ryugagotoku set around Naha, and one of my favourite flicks - Takeshi Kitano's Sonatine (trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7chFW_Fhb0 ) which is such a great, unromanticised view of the pinkie-less mafioso...

I know three people who already do at least one of those things you listed. I think we already have longtime members... pun intended. :p

Any idea where I can get a copy to rent off-base? You think most of the Japanese rental places have it? I've never seen it but would like to. Please pm me if you have info. Thanks.
