I'm moving back to the US of A soon, and I'll be looking to purchase a new phone. I've got a Japanese iPhone already, so I'll skip the questions about the iPhone. I'll start with the things I dislike about the iPhone.

1. NO MULTI-TOUCH SCREEN!! I hate this when I'm doing any kind of typing. I'm pulling RBs left and right with my iPhone.
2. Not the greatest actual phone in the world.
3. Can be very slow, both browsing the interwebs, and in offline usage.
4. The only service provider that currently offers the iPhone is AT&T. They charge more monthly for an iPhone unlimited data plan than say, Verizon would for a Blackberry plan of the same nature. Also, AT&T's coverage isn't the best.
5. PRICE. The phone itself is 200 bucks... and it's not like japan where I can spread out that cost over the life of my phone. A Comparable blackberry is only $50.

Pro's for the iPhone:

1. Software! There are far too many apps that I've become all but dependent upon.
2. Infrastructure! I've already invested sooooo much money and time into the iTunes infrastructure, it'd be ridiculous to try to use any other media device than an iPod/Phone. (I do have a 2nd gen iPod touch as well as my japanese iPhone)
3. I won't continue on too much... the bennies of the iPhone are many...

Will anyone on JU make an argument AGAINST the iphone? Anyone know if the iPhone is quad-band, so I could use it overseas if I bought a US one?

Pretty much. As soon as Windows gets in on the action and creates a phone that can handle WFP/C# apps, Microsoft wins... Much larger programmer base, and probably more professional as well.

I've never had one but my Touch is cool and I could see really digging it as a phone if I got used to the keyboard.

I have two brothers who swear by their Blackberries. One has a IPod Touch but for phone usage they both prefer Blackberry.

i recommend a landline (cheap and excellent reception) has no apps but does exactly what its supposed to do. in fact get an alf phone you can use it as a conversation piece at dinner parties.

Oh Damn!! The brick!! I remember those! I actually had one for awhile. That was one heavy ass phone. If you were ever attacked you could also use it as a self defense weapon. Hit somebody in the head with that, they ain't getting up any time soon!

So let me get this correct. Arguments against the Iphone in the states on ATT's network.

I have heard their network sucks bad. Meaning AT&T had no idea what they were getting into with the Iphone. Too many people hogging the bandwidth.

But that's just hearsay since I have no personnel experience with it in the US.

I thought all iphones had the same quad-band antennas. :scratchchin:

Anyone use their iphone over 3g for voip? It'd be a cheaper alternative to actually using the cell phone to make calls.

ANDROID homie!

Pretty much every app you can find on Apple you can find in the Android store as well, plus, android is open source, SO, anybody with the know how can write new apps for it.

(does that mean you will be at home writing apps? probably not. but it does mean, that instead of only getting apps that some approved developer submits to apple marketing, every smart nerdy guy from Santa Clara to South Carolina can go in his basement, write an app, put it on the web, and your Android phone can download and run it.)

I was messing around with the Android phones the other night, and let me tell you, they are NICE! Not saying they are better/worse than an iPhone, since I don't own either, but based on a cursory check, I'd say they are on a level playing field.

That new "Droid" phone looks nice, can't believe it's made by Motorola.

Some Claim Android App Store Worse Than iPhone's (http://mobile.slashdot.org/story/09/11/20/1558259/Some-Claim-Android-App-Store-Worse-Than-iPhones) on Friday November 20, @03:31PM

from the scylla-meet-charybdis dept.

eldavojohn writes "If you think the iPhone app store is the only mobile game store suffering an exodus (http://slashdot.org/story/09/11/19/164229/Respected-Developers-Begin-Fleeing-the-App-Store), some game publishers claim Android's app store isn't much better (http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSTRE5AJ1EU20091120), for a different reason — it doesn't generate much revenue. In fact, French game developer Gameloft (which owes 13% of its profits to iPhone game sales), said, 'We have significantly cut our investment in Android platform, just like... many others. It is not as neatly done as on the iPhone. Google has not been very good to entice customers to actually buy products. On Android nobody is making significant revenue. We are selling 400 times more games on iPhone than on Android.' So the trade-off seems to be more sales but an annoying approval process, versus a lack of sales promotions and no annoyance around approval. It seems that those in it for money will opt for iPhone, and those in it for distribution will opt for Android. Or maybe someone will get it right one of these days?"

That sounds real safe. lol

I'm all for open source and making it easier for developers to get their apps on phones, and as much as it would be safer to have an approval process I agree that this method will allow for more innovative software. However, this also means that the already-computer-illiterate will just have another avenue to get rocked with malicious software. lol.

Approval process keeps dummies safe. :p

Then nintendo seal of approval process came and the videogame world was saved.
