You can argue the religous aspects, but doesnt accepted history and science indicate that Jesus the man did actually exist?

Not positive. I pulled an RB. :p

Hard to know, anymore... I mean, the armour that Samson wore supposedly didn't even exist for a few hundred years (according to the History Channel) after the fight between him and David. So... Which parts are true and which parts are just made up? lol

Cheech and Chong and the Keebler elves would have lightened up the story a bit. I'd probably watch the movie then.

Easter Bunny is a new sugar coated representation of the fertility rituals conducted by the Pagans during Spring designed to sell candy to kids. Bunnies represented the spreading of "seed" and eggs represent the "seed" being spread to create new life.

"Ohhh... Daavey."

Now that would be a bible I would read! Satan as Saron, Gandalf as Gabriel, Aragon as Job, that would be cool.

Tolkien does have many Christian themes in his writings since he was devoted Roman Catholic as well. Mainly, good vs. evil and virtue concurs all. There are even college classes dedicated to the interpretations of his works.

The TV show "Clash of the Gods" Season 1, episode 9 is a good explanation of his works. From Beowulf to Catholicism is explored.

One thing I've never seen hit on is the Eagles and the Fellbeasts. I've always seen them as representing the emergence of air power in warfare.

Anyways.. I'm a nerd. Nice to meet you.

Zim is right.

The up and coming religion were resisted by believers in the old.. hence placement of holidays on top of the older ones. How else to appease and slowly phase out the "heathens". Just a religious version of "Just slip the tip in".

The new god came and tried to replace the old gods. When the people resisted, the new god gave them new holidays that had similar purpose to ease the transition. But still the people resisted. So the new god said "if I can't have you no one can!", and the fires burned and the people died.

As is still going on today to some degree, if they can't convert you they'll kill you. Now where did I put my Jihad? :scratchchin:

Which came first, the Easter bunny or Jesus?

The goddess Eostre (from whence came the name easter) was first in the myth of Easter and made the hare (rabbit, bunny) her sign as the coming spring. As the goddess of Spring, she was also considered a symbol of fertility and rebirth, as seen when the snows melt, temperatures warm, the grass and trees grow green, and the animals reappear, some after hibernation.

(Note: There are far too many sources to cite regarding this, so flex your Googlefu if you're interested.)

I have nothing nice to say about the Jesus bit of easter, so I won't.

There's nothing wrong with being a nerd! :D

I always thought the rings of power were symbolic of nuclear weapons. I can see where the fellbeast and eagles are symbolic of air power like you said. It also reflects how the race of men is a warmongering race and can never leave well enough alone.

Maybe we need TNA intervention. ;) Tolkien Nerds Anonymous

I'm game. I've already lost friends by delving into the details of the books and movies. I'm afraid they see me as a Tolkien RM.

Hey, one positive note, at least were aren't Trekkies! (sorry if that offends any of you.) j/k

We have a really good book called "Middle Earth for Dumbies." lol, I know it sounds goofy but it does provide a lot of insight and back story to the maiar (sp?) and older races. If you want to borrow it sometime, let me know. :D

I've already devoured "Unfinished Tales", and the "Silmarillion". Not much more I can absorb.. :crying:

Also, it's Trekkers now. Trekkies have no life.. Trekkers apparently do. (Not really)
