If you're downloading a torrent, then you're uploading too. All they have to do is connect to the tracker and get a list of IP addresses that are leeching/seeding and check which ones they can connect to. If I download a torrent, it's generally from a private tracker that the feds are less likely to be on (I was busted a couple years ago for downloading Final Cut Pro so I don't take too many chances now).
I've been using Usenet the past few weeks and I'm loving it. My speeds start out around 6MB/s and climb to a steady 8.5MB/s usually (yes, megabytes per second. 8.3GB took me about 19 minutes the other day). It just sucks you have to pay for access, but it's not too expensive. I think I paid something like $11. Totally worth it IMO.

Also your USENET bandwidth rolls over too. so depending on your download habits, you could last a long while if you didnt want to pay for a few months.

Why use a proxy? To have it cut out an hour after? Or for the slow trans-speed?
Are you just against someone paying for a fast, dependable and secure alternative to PB?

the point is if you're going to a high profile site like PirateBay, your chances ARE MUCH higher because it is very public. Even encrypted bittorrent is not fail safe.
The agencies are watching these places, because they yeild a higher success rate of busting somebody. If you go out looking for the stuff that the MPAA/RIAA/Feds/etc looks for, your pretty much walking into a mine field.
I dont download anything American or New because its either out of their jurisdiction or not worth the chase. Plus if I can buy or rent it, why do I need to download it? Anything I truley want is worth buying.

i dont get the logic that some people (in general) believe they are entitled to download whatever and EVERYTHING they want without paying for anything. It's downright abuse of a system.
There are plenty of tools and resources out there to preview music and video to see if you'll like it. We have ala-cart purchasing for the four songs a person likes out of a disc. you can get netflix and watch streaming video... the list goes on.

this is true, you are more at risk, but as you stated no matter where you dl the media, unless the site owns digital rights or they have an agreement with whatever company you are still at risk ...look at hulu, when NBC took over joined or whatever, they very quickly made viewing thier media outside the states, unavailable. By obtaining these rights this how I tunes, Zune market place ect, has been able to provide content to select areas.

well i use either isohunt.com, or mininova.org

And that's exactly why private trackers are better. You'll get banned if you do that. I've been pretty disappointed with just about every public tracker out there because people either have some firewall blocking connections or they have their client set to not upload. People who aren't uploading will generally get shitty speeds unless their client is breaking the bittorrent protocol somehow, but so many people do this that it affects everyone else's speed. My speeds on TPB and others were terrible. A torrent with 200 seeds should be pretty quick, but it's not because about 185 of those seeds are unconnectable. A torrent with 8 seeds on a private tracker is always much, much faster for me. Proxying isn't safe either. I actually used a proxy to download final cut pro and I still got busted (didn't get sued fortunately).
Here's the letter the BSA sent to the proxy I used:

Oh well, seriously why should you have to pa for anything you can watch for free(tv shows), its just stupid, but then again this has been an arguement since the vcr rolled out.

NBC had to make separate negotiations with each contract with each company (Apple, MS, Hulu) so you cant say because one company allows one thing isnt fair, its all based on the agreement between the companies. NBC determines how their content is going to be distributed.
I also noticed not all NBC is blocked, just mostly the stuff that is out new and needs to pass a certain foreign waiting period so that the other countries dont pirate stuff ahead of their foreign release date.
I buy PS3 and Xbox games. I won't pay for PC games because I don't want that Starforce shit installed on my computer monitoring what I have installed (I do buy games off of Steam; they're reasonable) and I don't want to be told I can only install a game X amount of times. I used to buy stuff off of iTunes until I had to format and I found that I couldn't re-download what I paid for. Apple pretty much told me to get bent. After Sony's rootkit fiasco on their music CDs, I don't really trust the labels. They won't be getting my money (the bands make very little from itunes and CD sales). Netflix is blocked over here and not all of us are fortunate enough to have a base PO box. I download movies and then buy the ones I like. I just bought Coraline on blu-ray the other day because I liked what I downloaded and wanted to get the HD version with surround sound and all the extras.

and thats what i said , the broadcasting companies have agreements for content...hulu was an example..........and your are right you an still go to some broadcast sights watch whatever. Now prove to me usenet has these rights/agreements......after a little searching on the net it seems usenet is on the radar.....as i read somewhere before and I am trying to find it.....MPAA will not waste time with individual dlers as it cost more money than it is worth...they will active pursue p2p sites and the uploader....look at piratebay and Axxo(uploader). So basically no matter what unless you are using Itunes or something similar are you safe.

Oh trust me, I know you could care less what I do with my money.
I'm not saying anything about what the OP asked, what I am saying is that you put in your 2cents, asked others for their 2cents.
I gave my 2cents, then asked for your 2cents again; which you gave to me, but then spiced it up a little. Do you not see this?

That's half the fun! I don't know how many movies/shows I've downloaded because I had some spare time, needed something watch, and saw that it was the hot new thing everybody was talking about, only to finish and go "wow, I'm glad I didn't actually BUY that piece of crap."
