I didn't look specifically for computer books, but I was not impressed with their so-called "bookstore." D: I was far more impressed with the one at Iwakuni and it was smaller!
....But they do have a computer repair shop there which I'm totally looking forward too. *_____* Especially all the graphic cards, amagawd!!
Against my better judgment, we went to the BX yesterday. I have to say that I'm impressed. The book store was the main attraction for me (but someone told me Alienware computers were available...). And yes, the book store was nice. Snagged a copy of Dan Brown's "The Lost Symbol".:grin1:
As expected, the Computer book selection does not exist. I imagine that people who have Windows XP installed, and who would finally like to learn to use it would be quite happy.
Great place. It would be better without the Zombies (people with "Deer Caught In Headlight" syndrome), mindlessly wandering around, pondering which useless items to buy.
The place has potential, if they could manage to weed out "Brain Dead" shoppers, who insist on pushing shopping carts they don't need. Or the kind of people who wander around looking for "choke points" to slow down traffic with their useless carts, to cause congestion.
If you are in a hurry, and there is an African-American type of family in front of you, your best bet is to move to another register. Not saying this for any other reason, than that the family in front of me was seriously stupid.
Ten minutes of my time wasted, waiting for their kid to return for a needed toy, and a trip to the car for the stupid parents who left their I.D. cards and money in their car.
Money, hah!!!!!!:cursing:
More like credit cards for each individual family member.:cursing:
How these people slipped into the "Gene Pool", is beyond me.

I've been to quite a few PX/BX and they all have basically the same selection. Defend your precious crap store all you want, it's still crap. None of them ever have exactly what you need and it can usually be found cheaper online or somewhere else.
You can try to polish a turd all you want by adding a "mini mall", escalators, and a few novelty shops, but it still smells like shit.
Thanks for not answering my question...P...you haven't been here to the new one so you have no idea what you are talking about. Your 15K+ posts and know it all attitude don't intimidate me...you are an Oki has-been. You are irrelevant.

Ok thanks Mr. Troll! Got anymore one liner posts for me?
Wasn't trying to intimidate you, just stating my opinon about the BX/PX. I don't need to be there to have an opinion, I've been to enough of them to formulate an opinion about it. There is a "mega PX" two blocks from me right now, biggest PX on an army post in the CONUS IIRC. It has about the same selection that every other PX I've ever been to has had. But yeah, ignore my examples about the over priced crap they sell at the PX and concentrate on be not being in Okinawa. How much you want to bet that in the future you'll have more people complaining about the lack of selection at your precious new mega BX?

Work clothes? Positively. T-shirts? Nope. Are you that picky about your khakis and polo shirts? I don't base my self-worth on how many people are wearing the same pair of dress pants or shoes at work. Nor do I even bother to look at the jeans other guys are doing. What are you doing staring at guys' asses? lol.
I wear the same thing to work everyday:D.
Who said anything about self worth? If it was up to me, I'd never wear clothes at all:D. I own one pair of khakis and their old as shit and the last time I wore a polo shit was when I had a civilian job. Never a big clothes person, just wear what is comfortable. However, any of the somewhat nice pairs of jeans they would have at the BX, they just about never had the "average" sized unless you happened to be there when they restocked.
blah blah blah...never defended a "precious" bx...just stated the fact that you have not been to this one and thus have no idea what you are talking about. Get some sleep, late on your side of the globe.
Oh sweet, this one is composed of two sentences instead of the usual one! You sure are defending the BX, and I'm simply stating my opinion that all BX/PXs are essentially the same. If you don't like it then tough shit, this is from my experiences with various PXs and BXs, not just the ones on Okinawa.
Good to see you've taken up a new hobby though:rolleyes:.

Wrong, you irritate me because you're typical pip-squeak cyber bully lurking around hour after hour, with a know-it-all attitude. You are quick to groan others, but how dare someone speak out against your opinion. In short...you can dish it but can't take it.

Rb get's groaned for saying stupid shit like this (http://www.japanupdate.com/forum/showpost.php?p=283135&postcount=151) not just to groan him. I never knew things like groans and post counts mattered that much. Unless you're trying to cover up the regular BS you normally post by pointing out my post count:rolleyes:. No biggie, you're not the first person who has done that in an attempt to make their own argument look more legitimate:rolleyes:. But hey, the slew of "meh" opinions to the new mega BX kinda prove my point that it's not anything special and is just like the rest of them.
Really, if you have nothing to say or if you're proven wrong either admit it, or just STFU about it.

If I knew you were only joking, I wouldn't have called you a negative Nancy. You did what RB tends to do and put the BX/PX in one category: Suck.
Maybe the BX/PX sucks, and maybe it doesn't. But we're in Japan, and it's pretty nice that even out here we're able to buy English books, magazines, clothes that fit, beef jerky, REAL CHEESE, etc, etc. People like you seem to believe that this level of convenience is owed and have no memory of how things used to be on this island years ago. Seriously, you guys are spoiled! Oxmix can probably say the same thing about me, but it wasn't that long ago where all you really had for fast food was Anthony's Pizza and Burger King! We knew that all the movies at the theaters were at least a few months late, but we dealt with it! How are they now? Closer to on time?
I can't take it seriously when people bitch about how difficult it is to live on island. **** you! (Not you P_chan, people in general). Try living off the local market for ten years without clothes that fit, paying $20 each person to see a damn movie, eating shitty cheese, and reading English newsletters from the City office like they're goddamn literature...
Yes my original post was in jest because I know that there are things you can get at the BX/PX (more so the commissary for me) in Japan that I was grateful for. However, I still feel that it deserves and overall rating of somewhere between "meh" and "suck" because there are things (power zone) that will always be lacking. I also find it funny when people make the BX/PX seem like the best thing since sliced bread.
Never fear! I will continue to troll this board with one liners and by posting stupid general statements about things I know nothing about:rolleyes:. Oh wait, that's not me:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Yep, I remember the days when Kadena was raving about just having BK. The facilities on this island today have a lot of folks spoiled. I on the other hand am very gracious to have what we do have.
Maybe I am the exception, but I've got no complaints about AAFES or DECA, but I'm not into games, electronics, or fashion clothes so that probably explains why I'm so easily pleased.
P's attitude only speaks volumes on his spoiled rotten attitude and how he was probably raised thinking he's entitled to any and everything, thus leaving the peasants like myself beneath him and his "do no wrong" attitude.

Who made the BX/PX the best thing since sliced bread? Again, you're pulling an RB.
The people who vehemently defend it when people just rant about things like a crappy selection. I know how to get around my gripes with the BX/PX, I've been doing it for a while. It's not pulling an RB at all, it's me having an opinion and ranting about my gripes with the BX/PX.

IMHO if a chick gets knocked up in a one night stand she should assume she's on her own. She's lucky if the guy helps her hut there shouldn't be a law forcing him to do so. If this was the way it is chicks would he more careful. It takes two when they want their money but yet abortion is their decision alone because it's their body. Bullshit they get it both ways.

No I'm simply pointing out your logic...is it faulty...
I wasn't there when you were brought up...I speak opinion and it's "off limits, cause I don't know what I'm talking about" I can't have an opinion?
You are not here on Oki nor been to the new BX but you blast it...but that's ok because it's you, right?
You are full of double standards and BS...I'm one of the few that don't like it and challenge you on it...and you can't stand it...
No there is a difference. Talking about someone's personal life is totally different then making a comment about a retail chain that is on just about every military installation. There are certain things you don't say to people. You wouldn't go up to someone and say that you think they had a spoiled upbringing when you really don't know what they might have went though in their childhood. You're trying to compare apples and oranges.
For instance, even though I think RB says some of the dumbest things, I'm not going to make a comment about his personal and/or family life because I don't know what he's gone though in his life. But that's not going to keep me from calling him out when he says something I don't agree with. If he misconstrues that as me picking on him or having a "know it all" attitude, that's his problem, not mine.
Can't stand it? You're water off a ducks back! No point in explaining myself yet again.

I thought he was referring to you being in the Air Force and how they're the "pampered" branch of service so to speak.
If that was a personal shot than that's pretty low especially when you know nothing about the person.
P_chan it's no secret we don't like each other here too much but I will say this. You know who you at and what you been though so who cares what any of us think. Even if it was directed to you **** him. He don't know you. Don't let's people get to you. I know it's hard cuz some of you piss me off but you know.

What's different? As compared to the old BX?
Nothing.
More space, taken up by stupid people with shopping carts.
Shoe selection? Are you kidding me?????
It's a nice building , it has potential, but staffed by people who have no idea about customer service. It's not even the fault of the local staff.
I'll make my opinion after 22 October. Windows 7 should be on the shelves, maybe even see some new computers with the i-7 chip, but who knows?
Have you seen the music selection in the CD section?

One aisle dedicated to "RAP" crap, a small section for Hispanic music.
Looks like the typical stance some people take.
If you don't like a certain type of music that's fine. And generally if its just that music exclusively, the person will support why they don't like it, with opinons based SOLEY on the musical content.
Instead however, "I don't like THAT music" is ususally a device. THe music is just a proxy for the culture its associated with.
Half the time, when someone takes such an outspoken, over vocalized stnace on how they hate "X" music, they are really just using that as a more socially acceptable method of venting on how they don't like "X" culture, and really just don't like "X" people.

Am I trying to find racism where there isnt? no. I didn't accuseHIM of being a racist. I just made the additional observation that STILL has demonstrated truth, that a lot of people use criticism of music as a way to bash people's culture by proxy. People DO IT.
As for his finding racism in his post specifically, If I was intent on spotlighting percieved racism, I would be pointing out that "Af American Family comment, which did actually smack of racism"
As for why the Rap section is bigger than other sections, its just predictive marketing. based on the demographics on island, the PX staff believes there will be the greatest demand for the music in that section. Stock what your customers want. On this island, the largest population of SOFA is junior troops, the 18-25 crowd, so of course they are going to stock more 18-25 music.

You couldn’t be more wrong. That’s right I can’t stand rap, never have - never will. I think it is crappy music and it annoys the shit out of me. But my dislike for rap has nothing to do with black people. Even if a white dude, Spanish guy, Jew, Mexican, Canadian, Japanese or any race, type or creed was rapping I would hate it all the same.
Insinuating that people who hate rap are really saying that they hate black people is just retarded. I can’t stand Japanese music, Japanese TV shows, Japanese movies, and most Japanese food. But I like Japanese people. I like them so much that all I date is Japanese women.
So….
Hating music “X” ≠ Hating “X” people.

The way I took what Isa was saying is that the tone of certain people's comments when they say they hate rap/country/etc implys that they hate black/white people music. Like when I read your initial comment about hating rap I could feel your passion for not liking rap music and could tell you didn't have any ill feelings towatrd people of color. But the way I read Bones' posts and how he always generalizes rap and latin music, and lumps them together you can tell he only likes music by white people.
Kinda like when your boss says "hey come here" and has a paper in his hand and the way he says it you know he didn't just say "hey come here" he actually said "look what you did, you ******* moron". :)

you're not making the connection with what I said. I did not at any point say that "people who hate rap are really saying the hate black people". I am black and there is rap that I hate.
What I DID say, is that there are plenty of times, (see, not an absolute or every single time statement) or there are SOME PEOPLE (again, see how that statement is not all inclusive?) where people use music as a proxy for culture.
They may not even actively realize they are doing it.
Usually, you can get a clue of which you are dealing with by the wording and how they express their opinion.
IE: The guy that says, "I hate rap. Rap sucks. The words are stupid, and they have no talent, and its annoying" VS the guy that sounds like "I hate rap. I can't stand that ignorant, ghetto blasting, gangbanger, street music"
Just like the difference between
"I hate country. Sappy, nasal, depressing, my dog died and woman left me, crap" VS " I hate country, I don't wanna hear that good ole boy, hillbilly ass shit"
Again, I am NOT calling anyone who criticizes music a racist, I AM saying that SOME people vocally get all bitchy about criticizing the music, because in reality what they really have is a disdain for the accepted culture. (BTW, race of the performer is inconsequential. For people that DO think that way, if they see, for example a white rapper, they get just as irked by him for embracing the culture they think is so inferior.)

Actually Uriel, when I said (Yes, I am specifically thinking of people that get all pissy about rap, but what they really want to say is "that damn black people music") I still wasn't insinuating you. I was talking about the general concept and stating that YES, it is rap bashing specifically that brought this to mind. Not because I am accusing you, but because RAP bashing is where I notice it most, and the post right before it that made me think of mentioning the whole concept was an anti rap post. So, while you might have made a post that brought the topic to my mind, the post in particular was not directly aimed at you. As for the island princess or Okie princess bit, what does that have to do with any of it? I am gathering from some of the rest of this thread that maybe you are with an Okinawan or something? is that it?
Don't see how that would fit, since the term Oki Princess or island Princess, refers to girls, (and more often than not American girls) who get here and aren't that attractive but get a big head and act/get treated as if they were 10's just because there are so few available chicks compared to guys here. One thing is anyone that is doing Western Unions, do not go upstairs, it is downstairs all the way on the left side at that customer service center.

Don't really care. I'm all for closing loop holes, to prevent illegal aliens from entering our country.

Bones, I am all for the setup of the allotments, but I can not do that since I am a civlian/contractor. Plus sometimes you just have to send money to family that have been through natural disasters/medical emergencies and Western Union has always been there for us when it needs to get there now. This is a ****** up thing to say. I know it's been said many times.
But it does also remind me of what I've observed in the states. That is racism is only racsim when it's a white person making a comment this. When whites are victims of racism it goes unnoticed.
Now I bet my left nut if somebody posted something like "if you ever come across a white family......." or "I was at the PX today and the whiteboy took forever etc etc" there would have been no outrage. Nobody would have noticed.
Bones your post is all kinds of ****** up so don't think I'm backing you.

When whites are victims of racism it goes unnoticed.
And you sir are wrong once again.
Both statements are true and false based simply on the generalization of them. However, I have seen firsthand racism against white people here on Okinawa in a military workplace. Multiple incidents of this type of racism went unnoticed by those in authority or were considered "okay" because the person being racist was of a minority ethnicity and "no one wants to make waves" like that. Not all cases of racism in the workplace are noticed and dealt with, but the ones that are noticed and dealt with have a tendency to be against white people more often than not.

I guarantee I won't be back more than maybe once a year, if I just happen to be after an odd item.

Wow thats kinda ****** up to say bones!
Yeah, now that I've had a chance to cool down for a while, it was kind of a ****** thing to say. But my rant stands as is. If it were a family of any other type of color, race, or whatever, I would have ranted about them as well.
I'm not a particularly leisurely kind of shopper. I hate crowds, long lines, etc...
I know what I want before I go to the store, grab it and get the heck out as fast as I can.
In this case, the offenders happened to have been African-American. One time I ranted about some lady who needed a "Coach Purse/Bag", and then told her kid that he couldn't have a soda because they couldn't afford it. She was Caucasian.
I rant about people of all colors/races, that use credit cards to purchase a pack of smokes and a soda. Don't give me some line of crap that you don't have time to use the ATM machine in/near the store. You're on company time while you're shopping anyway.
Thought that I had posted that message in the "Rant" section, if I posted it somewhere else, my bad. I rant about things occasionally, not too often, but that's all they are. A means of venting frustration.

Bones, I have some questions.
1. How do you KNOW people are using a credit card? It could very well be a Visa check card/debit card?
2. What the **** is wrong with a chick buying a Coach bag? How do you know the kid didn't just have a soda. What if she limits his soda intake for nutritional reasons?
3. Why would the race of the family even factor in to what they did to annoy you?
4. Why does everyone else's buying/spending habits bother you? Is it any of your business and if so how?

I don't think that the problem is the COACH bag, I think its the fact that you're gonna say out loud that you can't afford a soda while you walk around with a big expensive purse. Its more about how you appear to those around you.
Shit I wouldn't let my kid have a soda either, but I wouldn't say that I couldn't afford it.

I'm pretty sure this aren't the exact words she used OR it was taken out of context. Bones has a history of leaving out key details.
Even so I can't afford it is a better excuse than just telling the kid no. Sometimes for whatever reason you must tell the kid no but she didn't want to look like the bad guy so she just said she can't afford it.

BS...you tell the kid no, then you tell them the reason. i.e. No, because you didn't clean your room as you were told, or no, because you already had one today, or, no, because last dentist check up you had a cavity...any of those are better than I can't afford it because I'm buying a $100 purse!

More like I'm losing interest. Also do not have as much free time on my hands.
This will be my last post within the Forums, and unlike others, I will not be returning.
Bye all.

I rant about people of all colors/races, that use credit cards to purchase a pack of smokes and a soda. Don't give me some line of crap that you don't have time to use the ATM machine in/near the store. You're on company time while you're shopping anyway.

This only highlights more ignorance on your part. :cursing: What about people/families that use their credit cards for almost everything then pay them off at the end of the month? That's what my wife and I do. We only use cash/yen off-base or maybe when we hit the drive through on base as to make it quicker.
We never, yes NEVER use the ATMs. We've gone years without using them. It's just a lot easier to cash checks for a large amount and stretch it out.:first:
How do you know everyone in the BX, even if in uniform are on "company time"?:scratchchin:
I actually agree with you on this one.
With one exception.
People do not pay off their debt's at the end of the month. They buy, buy, buy......
It feels like you are paying your bill. When the spouse/kids, add more burden to your wallet, you start to reconsider..:scratchchin:
My spouse has the opposite effect on me. I can't buy some of the things that I would like to have. Then again, it saves me from wasting useless dollars on things that I don't need. In a sense, she is containing "my inner child", and I'm grateful for that.
My Mom, sent me $50.00 for my birthday today. My wife made me spend it on a new pair of shoes.:scratchchin:

P.S.
I enter the "won't be back again" thing sometimes. Just for a measure of how worthless I am.:grin1:

Don't really know what you are talking about. I'd bet that you and my wife have been in the same room probably less than two hours total. You, on the other hand, used to always explain how you can't leave the house to join us at our outings because of the wife. Yeah, whipped.
Your turn. How am I whipped?
If I'm whipped to anything, it's to schoolwork. I'm not going to throw away good money that has already been spent on a class to hang out in a bar. Especially when it's not my money to throw away.

1. How do you KNOW who pays their bill and who doesn't?
2. Why do YOU care?
If people don't pay their credit card bill I don't care. It's their credit. As far as the credit cards companies **** em. I have no sympathy for them. They know they're taking a risk by giving people credit.
But here's the kicker. Other people's spending habits ain't my business.

Again you make a blanket statement.
A more correct assumption would be "SOME people do not pay.....etc, etc."
And unlike some folks on here you do NOT know me or my family or our spending habits. Please don't clump us into your assumptions.

Less then 30 minutes. Yet you throw away your own money?:scratchchin:
I don't attend a lot of events, simply because I like being at home. And most of the people that I've met, really don't impress me all that much. So why waste my money buying them drinks?
I wasn't saying that you are "whipped". I was just saying that in spite of all of your complaints, you love your wife.
I love mine, that's why I stay home.

When you knew me as being broke last year, I was paying $2000 every six weeks for a Master's degree. If you call that throwing away my own money, then yes, I was throwing away my own money. Ended up owing my wife's parents $9000 for a loan to help me finish. Now I have to pay that back. If that too is throwing away money, then yes, I am throwing away money.

Nope, I don't know you.
My assumption is right on target however.
Look what pops out of peoples wallet at the register. I've worked for a person who had 8 Credit Cards, was making mega-bucks, and all of his money went to bills.
They had everything they wanted, except a secure future.
While your profile may not fit my assessment, many other people live those I've described above. And here come the lawyers with clever ways to get them out of their mess.
They would not even be in the mess that they had gotten themselves into, if they had common sense. Hire a lawyer, lower your bills, who gets stuck with the debt? The "Tax Payer".
If you doubt this, take a look at the line in front of you. How many people use cash/compared to credit cards?
Almost nobody.

I have a good family. :)
My job is paying for my Ph.D. After spending tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket in one year that I could have spent on a really nice car, guitar, and whatever else, damn it feels good to have 100% FULL tuition assistance. Anyone who has a problem with me putting money in another boss' pocket can suck it. It doesn't get better than free tuition assistance. If you DON'T use it, that's like saying, "Nah, I don't need that $15,000 a year raise. Keep it." It also doesn't get better than free certs, free trips to get free certs, and free trips to web development conferences. Working for THE MAN is awesome.

The tapayers suffering is the government's fault not the people with delinquent bills. It's the government that bails out companies.
If people don't pay their bills then the credit card companies can suck it up. Maybe they should be more careful in who they give credit to.

This is going to take me four or five years. Won't be so young then... Well, 35 or 36 is a nice age, I guess. After that, the goal is to get paid teaching online courses. Can't beat that. Sit at my computer when I want to and guide a course. Lots of flexibility. Then, I think I'll be living MY dream. It's all about living the dream you want to live...

Your "ASSUMPTION"...
So what if people are using credit cards that doesn't automatically mean they are in debt over their heads and don't pay them off each month.
How do you know that someone paying cash didn't take a cash advance or is using cash recieved on a pay day loan...that's the problem when you assume.:scratchchin:
I don't pay finance charges/interest. We use one particular card for everything. There are cash back incentives and other savings if you use them on a regular basis. I routinely can apply those earnings to my balance.
Truth is credit cards hate people like me.
Yes I use my credit card for almost every transaction...and I hope like hell you are behind me the next time. You can blow, sigh, complain all you want to...but in the end you have no idea what you are talking about...you only make "assumptions".:cursing:
Gotta question for you...do you allow customers to use credit at your place of business, if it involves transactions, or have you in the past been in such a situation and demanded "cash only"?

Let's say people are in debt. So what? How do you know their situation?
Maybe they're using the credit card for food and rent. They had some trajedy and gave no money. Yes they know they can't pay it back right away but **** it.
They need to eat in the mean time.
Just because someon is in debt over their head don't make em a deadbeat.

Throwing money away, is more like an evening out. Just because you have cash in your pocket, doesn't mean you have to blow it on your fan base.
No problems with you wanting to use every dollar that you get from "The Man", for your education.
Appreciate what you have at home.

I don't throw away all my money out with my "fan base". I do throw away most of the little bit of money I take out for drinking, though. But that's what that money has been set aside for. I set some money aside for music and movies and other money aside for socializing with my friends. They keep me balanced. Otherwise, I'd probably never leave the house. So it's worth it.

I love Mrs. Burns with all my heart. I always will too. But we drive each other nuts and need a break from each other. Her to go out drinking with her friends and me with my friends or the JU crew.
Going out and spending money on drinks don't mean you don't love your significant other any less.

it is just as easy for others/us/me to make assumptions about him without knowing his financial status...

Look what pops out of peoples wallet at the register.
really though, do you know they are actually CREDIT cards and not DEBIT cards? i very, very rarely use cash at places like the exchange. i almost always use my debit card because i don't like to carry a lot of cash. i use debit, it comes out of my checking account, and i almost never use actual credit. i don't as a general rule spend more money than i have at the moment. while it is true that many people rack up a lot of credit card debt, not everybody using a card is living like that.

I will say this. It's my guess that Bones HAS to work.
There's nothing wrong with that in itself but when you act like Billy Badass Financial dude and you're still working at a job at age 101 you look like an idiot.
What I mean by that statement is you can usually tell if somebody has to work or not by where they work.
Let's say a guy is a doctor or IT guy. These are something that people would have a passion for. So although they can retire they keep doing it because it's part of who they are. Working at your own business is another example.
But I highly doubt anyone is that passionate about managing somebody else's establishment. Which shows they probaly need to work.
Just my two yen.
Also like I said there's nothing wrong with having to work. Just don't act like some big shot financial cat.
