I know a lot of people (mostly Americans) who absolutely love Coco's curry, in spite of having the runs the rest of the day. :o I don't especially like Japanese curry though. I never acquired a taste or nose for it. Ick. I prefer Indian or Thai curry.

It's not bad every once in a while. But I don't know how people can eat it so much like it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. I know americans who have only eaten at Coco's and not anywhere else off base! Come on now, there are a ton of better places then Coco's.

Me and my kid went there awhile back. We both like fairly spicy food so he tried a 5 and I think my cheese curry was a 7 (not sure). Well, never again... Had to do the dab with wet tp for a few days!

American families will eat anything that they do not have to cook themselves! That is why CoCo's is so damn popular! I personally can't stand it, and I'm glad to see others who agree.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it. The one near Kadena always seems to be full during the lunch hour with "Y" plates.
I have eaten there with my family purely to see what the big deal was about, however for myself and my family we really weren't impressed. It was ok once, but I doubt I will ever go there again.
We usually eat curry at home once a week or so and it just seemed strange to go out to eat for something that we regularly eat at home.

I once went in there to pick some up, this was at a time when I did not live near bases and rarely saw American's, unless I was up near Chatan at the week-end. I was so shocked, I was suddenly surrounded by all these people in uniform eating curry and the lady at the counter spoke to me in english.
I had to go and look outside just to make sure I was still in the country I
thought I was!
I too am not that impressed, not somewhere I'd go for a meal out, but maybe
to pick up as a take-out.
I've only been to co-co's once. I never really understood what people love so much about it. I'm just not a curry guy, even when it's cooked at home. I'll eat it, but it's nothing I go out of my way to eat for lunch.

I'm with dk on this one, but I think a lot of folks here like it 'cause it's fast, cheap, good volume, and has English menus.
I am a fan of Indian, Pakistani, and Nepalese curry restaurants.

I used to eat level 10 it's good but you loose some of the taste of the curry with the extra spice. Really level 5 and less are better. Once you past level 5 you loose some of the taste.
DocTurtle
01-10-2008, 11:02 AM
Agreed. I stick with a level 5 normally. I had pork cutlet instead of the chicken the other day. It was ok, but I think I'm going to stick with the chicken. Why mess with perfection? I tried the oyster one once. It was...meh. Like you said Tony, anything past a 5 and you do lose some of the flavor.

Although I prefer Thai red curry over everything, CoCo's is still damn good! My normal meal: Cuttlefish curry level 4, and the occassional chicken cutlet with chese (like the rest of the Americans). I wouldn't brag about the price though, 8 bucks for a plate of curry is a bit expensive IMHO. Som Chai's Thai curry is tastier and much less expensive. Also comes with soup!

You are talking about Japanese curry, which is a perverted comfort food in the same overall species as light beer.
If you want to see why a few billion other Asians think curry is a good thing, get out and try some (it sounds like Uminchu's house might be a good place to start:thumbup1:). After you work through about 500 different Indian curries you can move to Malaysian, Thai, Cambodian, Bengali, and Pakistani.

Indeed. I often make the comparison of CoCo's to a place like Taco Bell. I think Taco Bell is fast fooduously delicious, but it doesn't hold a candle to real Mexican Food! Now I've got a hankering for good curry... Madras, Vindaloo, maybe some Thai curry too! yum!

I think that Japanese curry was invented with the intention of getting kids to eat their veggies.:w00t: Hell the "flavor" masks the actuall flavor of everything else in the roux that someone could probably add dog, cat, or mice meat into the mixture and all the people eating it would say was ...."Ohh it tastes so great, I just LUV curry"
Has anyone besides me ever wondered why there are no stray cats or dogs around any of the Coco's here in Okinawa?:-|

I've had several Indian curries. Most were good, but I just generally don't care all that much for curry...
Yeah, when I said that curry is just brown slop on rice, I was talking about Japan's (and America's as well) perversion of the product.
I will admit I've had some Indian (and probably some other country's too) curry that I really enjoyed. It's great with naan (sp?). I'd just rather have a plate of chicken.

Oh here it comes....talk to some older Okinawan's, like one's in their late 70's and up, some will tell you that cooking cats and eating the meat and soup was used as a medication for helping people with asthma here.
And it wasnt just on Kouri Jima either.

I like to taste my food and I also love and can handle pretty high heat (spicy), but when it's too spicy, it's not enjoyable in my opinion. I'm definately a bigger fan of the Indo and Thai varieties. I've been here in Oki more on than off since 00'. I haven't had COCOs in 6-7 years, although from what I remember I agree that it's overrated. My wife and I always get a chuckle out of all the Y plates in the parking lot, just thinking those people are paying (I'm sure a minimum of ¥600), for what we consider lower quality than the stuff we get for ¥100 at the store and occasionally heat up at home. My mother-n-law makes the best Japanese curry. Gotta have Rakyo (kind of a cocktail onion) or red pickles with Japanese curry (kare)..............
For you Indo style consumers, Krishna is great...........

CoCo's is okay... one in awhile. Like some people have said, I don't get some people's infatuation with the place. It's gotta be because it's right by the base and people are so scared to venture any further out. While it's not really venturing out that much more, I really like Kabab's on 58 - Indian curry. Me and my wife frequent there.

I'm finding a re-occurring theme here.:first::first::first:
The Shrimp burger's actually a good choice at McD's(Makudonarudos).
Sushi's almost my favorite food, you should try it at Yoshihachis. That place could almost make any Sushi hater a fan.
As far as Mexican goes, homemade is the closest you'll get here. I go to "MyHouse" restaurant by Futenma on 58 for good-ass tacos and every other tasty, loaded with grease thing they have.
I don't eat CoCo's.
As for Sauce, good if you're lazy, but too expensive. I make better ribs at home/.
I didn't mean to say you're lazy. I meant anyone who's lazy and feels like droppin some dough on a good meal could enjoy Sauce on occasion. Laziness is my number one dilemma in life.

well... i love coco's i normally get the pork cutlet triple meat level 4...
coco,s is pretty much my fav place to eat here so far.. i have went to 4 seasons and the food was OK.. not near enough food for the price though.. i dont like spending an assload of money and leaving hungry...
same with ono kau kau... my 4 yr old daughter at the fullplate in no time.. while i ordered 2 full meals and was still starving... food was ok though...
went to viking yakiniku.. ok experience i guess.. a lot of the meat was mor fat than meat... and i really didnt care to have to cook it myself.. i could cook at home... i may try a different one sometime in the future but i am not pressed..
dragons food was ok.... good for a weekend lunch or something.. food tasted pretty good... this is one of the best with price and quantity of food.. good value there in my opinion...
mickey d's here is pretty good.. i dont care for the truncated menu though... and that shrimp burger looks disgusting..
i dont do sushi in no shape or form... seaweed and raw fish the thought makes my stomach churn.... too each his own...
sauce live was pretty much the best food i have eaten on the economy so far.. the ribs were slamming..
well other than that havent ate much on the economy.. mostly coco's on a regular basis.. i am not really looking to become a curry afficionado or anything... ill try others.. in germany there were some places with some real good authentic indian curry...
i love authentic mexican food.. the kind you find in the states at authentic mexican spots where they speak little english.. lol..
in germany it used to bug me that they had all these other restauraunts and eateries with other countries cuisine... but they are operated by germans.. wasnt authentic at all to me..
i kinda see that here so i am leery about going to some places...
Now all you have to do is go to the places that americans tend not to go to. Those are the best kept secrets! I go to the american joints sometimes, I'll admit that. But I'd rather get myself a big blow of soba or a plate of okinomiyaki!

soba does nothing for me... i have been to a few work luncheons at various places... i am really not feeling japanese cuisine for the most part.. cant explain it... just not into it at all... i dont feel like i am missing out though....
creature of habit i guess
I'm the same way, somewhat. But I've gotten better since I've been here and now I don't know how I'd live without certain japanese/okinawan foods. What kind of soba did you have? If it's the soba you get with a main dish (like cutlet) then that isn't soba IMO. Soba is what you get from a place like gaba soki (my favorite) or hamaya or any of the other little soba shops throughout the island. Mmmmm just thinking about some soki soba and how the pork just falls off the bone is making my mouth water:thumbup:
Thanks Pchan. I'm going to Gabu soka (sp?) tonight. After hearing you talk about it makes me realize I haven't had a bowl in a few weeks. It should never go that long but sometimes I forget to eat it......

Oishiiso........
Had the Tonkatsu kare (pork cutlet curry) level 3 with a piece of Nan last night. Satisfying but barely, I'm back to being a hater.
IMHO, for my money, way better curry and katsu is available for a much lower price. I'm talking grocery store quality blows CoCo's away(IMHO)!
OK, that's my final word on your beloved CoCo's. All you die-hard fans, enjoy! That's more good curry for me elsewhere.

Not really a fan, but hubby loves it. I prefer homemade curry or indian curry. When I'm forced to go, I eat the Curry-kishimen noodles or curry w/spinach and mushrooms, 200 grams, level 1 with naan bread. But I rarely go anymore.

I like Cocos and I have tried others here on Island. I didn't like the Fab place on sunabe because there was no meat. In the chicken curry there were about two chicken pieces in the whole pot. I also didn't like how they rotated the dishes. Everyone breathing over the food was not good either. That place wouldn't pass a health inspection in the US IMO.
Talking about BBQ places. I don't know if anyone has tried Stacks. But that place is awesome. They have this corn bread that is off the chain. I am talking about everyone gets there own black skillet corn bread. Nice portions and they even have Collard greens. Great place and atmosphere....
Check it out.

Not sure about the health inspection but, every time I've been to Fab the curry was loaded w/ chicken. You must have went on an off day. There's also. IMHO, tons more flavor and variety at Fab, and for the price......
Other than Fab, there are many other great curry places.
Thanks for the tip on the BBQ joint.

Yeah, I know.. Everyone told me that a 5 would be real hot so I got a 6 and it wasn't as hot as I expected. Not complaining really, was just my observation. More disappointed in the people that told me how hot a 5 was. I may eat some today, maybe I'll try a 9...

Yoshihachi's is off of Kokutai Dori (23) down the street from Kadena gate 5. Last time I went though I agreed with all the negative reviews. I think it may have been AH who said it best, something along the lines of him selling shit sushi to American's who don't know fresh sushi. I won't go back, and would only reccomend it to people who don't like sushi and want to try to like it, cause his rolls are easy on the American Pallate(sp).

Hey, let's turn this CoCo's thread into a sushi thread.

Coco's may not be the best food on the planet (especially for the price) but I really do enjoy it. We probably go every other week or so, my husband and I.
The thing is, he works swings and I work swings...I don't get out until midnight most nights (3 am fridays), chili's too is only open 24 hours on weekends (and honestly I think chili's is more overrated than coco's, back home I wouldn't have touched chili's for a night out but a couple of my good friends love it), and only so many times can I eat McDonald's! (although, their freaking caramel macchiato mcflurry is freaking DELICIOUS!! I'm gonna go get one after work!) So when we get off work and want to sit down and eat some hot food instead of a sandwich I can run out and get some Coco's...quick and easy. It's already been established that I don't cook.
So. Coco's get's a thumbs up in my book.
Any other 24 hour joints out there? I'm open for suggestions.

Does McD's still have that caramel macchiato mcflurry? Is it a regular item now? It is awesome!
I think Joyful in the plaza by the convention center might be 24hrs. and I think Mos Burger, A&W and Yoshinoya is also.
I'm gonna let you all in on a little Coco's secret that my wife (former Coco's cook) told me. Don't waste your money on the spicy levels. Just get the regular spice. That "hot spice" on the table is the exact same stuff they use to make the different levels so just use that. The stores don't receive shipments of each level of spice; they only receive the regular spice and then they add the spiciness (thanks spellcheck!) themselves.
If you're ordering take-out, ask for the spice. It comes in little red packets and they are 10 yen each (which kind of sucks because the spice on the table is free when you dine in). One packet will probably bump you up to around level 4 (it's been a few years since I've ordered something other than regular though so I may be a little off).

Ok I'm there in two weeks, where can I get good curry in Colorado? I know 'Thai spice" in Aurora on Leetsdale is good, especially the pineapple curry, but if there is another place, I am so there! Anywhere that I can educate the family on good food is wonderful!:D

It's kind of like saying that you went to eat at Japan's version of KFC, ChiChi's or TGIFriday's....franchises that really dont sell good food, just fast food at fair prices, not great prices mind you fair prices.

I find it hilarious how many people claim that CoCo's is crappy just because most Americans here love it. They talk down their noses about it and say it's 'fast food curry', 'diarrhea on a plate' etc etc etc. Most of the time, however, these folks are just being generally disagreeable. I'm not pointing any fingers, as people have their tastes in food. But the folks I'm talking to know who they are.
It's curry for ****'s sake. Curry is not exactly a gourmet food. Thai curry, Indian curry, Japanese curry, all are more considered what we Americans refer to as comfort foods. Generally carb-heavy and high in fat, and delicious!
Curries tend to have an overwhelming taste, and CoCo's is even more rich than your average. As far as there being better places to eat curry, I find most Japanese curry to be quite bland in comparison. In a perfect world, It'd be green Thai curry or Vindaloo Indian curry all the time. CoCo's IS fast food in comparison to those two. Just my personal taste though.

I say it's crappy because of the taste, not because of the Americans. At one time I thought it was good curry, until I tried other types and brands of curry and decided that coco's was mediocre at best. Not bad every once in a while but there is no way I could eat it more than every other month. IMO some of the best curries I have ever had have all been homemade:thumbup:.
I had this some chicken curry at the japanese market in Arlington Heights Illinois that was awesome. They had some type of teriyaki sauce on the chicken an then they put the curry on top of that, it was surprisingly good:thumbup:

not as bad as taco bell. coco curry is cheap, quick, and far easier than making it yourself. nevermind the haters here, just go try it and see if you like it. it isn't gourmet, but it's not horrible.

just ate there last night....wanted to order the chicken katsu curry ..spicy sauce...but got the fried chicken instead....was thinking of having them fix the order, but since i have never tried the fried chicken just accepted the order....
the fried chicken at coco's is not good...it has good texture...but is tasteless...
will not order fried chicken curry ever again.....

Again to stress the deliciousity of the hirekatsu... I just had it 2 or 3 days ago, and I ate it again this afternoon... ******* TASTY! Uber tender for being deep fried.
Also, I wanted to throw a CoCo-question or 2 out there. What's everyone's favorite CoCo's? The CoCo's on 58 by navel kadena is the most consistent with spice, and the freshest in my experience...
second question... anyone know what year the coco-ichi spoon project started? I've got the spoons from 2005-present.

I finally found what I'll eat there: Half order "Tonkatsu" Pork Cutlet, double meat, base level. I add the spice and Worcestershire sauce.
Mr.Trail always gets the same ol' same ol' which I do not care for but he's crazy about. He could live of CoCo's and Subway for the rest of his life and eat the same damn thing from each place every time.
We go to the 23 CoCos

Please teach everyone here how in the heck when you are eating reconstituted curry roux mixed with water and poured next to rice that you can tell the difference in freshness?

Can you not tell the difference between a fresh fast food burger and one that's been sitting under a heat lamp for an hour? Fresh french fries versus wilted old fries? That's the 'freshness' I'm talking about. Curry sauce that's been sitting in a pan for hours is thicker, darker, and doesn't taste as good as freshly prepared sauce.
Sheesh, I'm not claiming that CoCo's is uses farm-fresh ingredients for that down-home taste!

I'll proudly necro this thread to announce that, after a long hiatus from Okinawa, I've returned. I have re-acquainted myself with CoCo's in the form of what I like to call breakfast curry: Sausage curry with omelette and cheese mix, level 6. It was taste-tastic when I ate it at 6am! Side note: CoCo's curry haters are merely misguided people with a holier-than-thou attitude. Let it ring throughout the land that CoCo's curry is "pretty good," as well as "an excellent way to take the edge off a hangover," and, "way better than that f**king tamago mac you're eating."

I must say, I'm a CoCo's hater but this sounds pretty damn good. I think I'll try it soon. What's that combo run you?
Well, this is probably gonna start a war. I'm almost even ashamed to say it but here goes, I've recently and secretly enjoyed CoCo's a couple times. I just can't live the lie anymore. Both times I sat there constantly looking around ad out the window at people and cars going by. I've been waiting to come out and see "CoCo's Lover" and "Traitor" painted on my car, lol.
So the thing is, it's not the greatest but is McDonalds the greatest burger you ever had? I highly doubt it but you eat there and enjoy it anyways. Same with CoCo's, it's not the best curry in the world (of course) but it's good shit. Had the Hirekatsu w/ cheese omelete, level 4, mixed in some of the sweet brown sauce and a bunch of pickles. MMMM good, it'll make you wanna slap your mama.
Alright there it is I'm out, I'm a fraud, let me have it.

Come to think of it, why do people heavily criticize fast food restaurants for not having high quality tasting authentic entrees? It IS fast food after all. I could see people complaining or being remotely disappointed if it was advertised as exquisite ethnic curry and the place was named the Chateau Vindaloo.:)

just go into meijers in the asian/ethnic section and you should be able to find the curry rous, or solid curry base, somewhere in there, i do believe i've seen it there before. most likely it will be the "golden curry" brand. if not, as you said, go down to detroit. there is a pretty decently sized japanese element down there and you should be able to find it. and yes, body armor comes in baby sizes. did you leave or something?

It just amazes me, with all the better Curry places around, people still eat that CoCo's poop. Curry House Fab on the seawall isn't too bad. Go for lunch, it's 700yen, and there are 6 types of curry, buffet style. 2 indian, 2 thai, 2 japanese. None of them are the greatest in the world, but it's friggin cheap!
Yeah, Krishna's good, but in that category try Kastemandap near Sea Side Jet City Burger in Hamby by Araha beach. They also have a new building near 58 in Hamby around the corner from the Cow Cow car shop. They use more fresh ingredients than Krishna I think and are cheaper. Krishna's good and their Nan is the star of the show but...
Fab can't be beat for the price and view but their Nan is maamaa (so so). Plus it's a buffet so you'll likely hurt yourself there.
There's a kinda new (I think) place in Awase near the love-motels and it just says Curry House on the front. I hear they're good. I'll post back after I try it.

I just ate at Coco's. Had the okra and tofu curry.
Oh, the staff there is getting really tired of all the people calling in an order from their car in the parking lot and then expecting it to get brought out to them. The staff would like to remind you that Coco's does not in fact have a drive through and they don't have the manpower to keep going out to the parking lot to cater to you. Just FYI.

Didn't you know Marines deserve and expect that sort of treatment wherever they go? There's some good Marines but I see too many of these young assholes doing shit like this and they act like they can get away with it and like they're supposed to be treated like Gods cause they're here.
Had Kastamandap again yesterday. Ate at the new building by the Cow Cow. It was great. The curry, nan, tandoori chicken and salad were really good. But, I decided to wash it down with a Lassi which I know I don't like particularly. Something about drinking sour yogurt grosses me out. It works great with the hot spice but I'd rather have a beer for that. Too bad it was during working hours.
That makes me wonder. Not that any of you would admit it but who here has A beer or glass of wine w/ lunch? Is that against regulations?

I know y'all fat round-eyes that move down to the seawall do it because you say you love the ocean....but how about letting some of the people that are retired, or have been honorably discharged, or who work for the military party down there without you bitching about cars and people having fun. YOU get off base housing and COLA to live there, the owners will never rent to locals, because they know they can gouge the government for mega bucks a month, all we want to do is hang out at the seawall. Surf, scuba, party, etc..with out y'all acting like it's base housing. The area was way more fun before it became a AFN dish and Y plate area. Congatulations, American Military and Local Housing owners, y'all have made a cool area into a stuck up, pretentious, money grubbing, COLA pit of Hell. If it wasn't for Hard Reef, I would never come down there.
And before you newb's say ...."wait you drunk bum, this is my "hood", I was going there in '96 before you were even out of middle school, and still crying to your moms about kids picking on you for whacking off in your socks.
Sunabe/Miyagi used to be cool.

Holy whine-fest batman! Wipe the tears off your face, lift your head up, and walk away there, buddy. Did you ever think that maybe when the Japanese were inhabiting the place that they were just too timid to say anything, while the Americans are "pretentious" enough to make the selfish demand that their property be their own?!

Technically, AF can't go off base in their ACUs/BDUs either. However, you are allowed to eat lunch off base in your ACUs/BDUs and/or make a quick stop at the store on your way home if need be.
Now the army, do they ever take off their uniforms? I see joes in walmart after midnight STILL wearing their uniform:D

Shame on you!
JK. How was it?
