"We lost one of our own this weekend out by Maeda Point ... not releasing name until the Airman's family can be notified. More to follow ..." KadenaAirBase tweet.

The helicopters were searching last night until like midnight or so.

Folks, if there is a warning in effect, plus someone in your chain of command reiterates the point...stay out of the water.

21 is way too young to drown. This could have been completely avoided.

That's sad, another example of why you don't mess around when it comes to the ocean.

Plus that area is rocky as hell! A strong wave could toss u into one of those sharp rocks. I would only SCUBA out there...

In any case, heart goes out to the family.

It sucks. I was at a friends house Sat night and saw all the helicoptors and boats searching for this guy. Its sad that he didnt make it, but at least they didnt give up.

the sea is indeed very dangerous in Okinawa (box jellyfish, strong current etc)

The ocean here in Okinawa is no more dangerous than any other place in the world. A little common sense and a little experience and the ocean is a great place to play.
