I'm starting a new job in Okinawa on a U.S. military base. I'm a civilian. The job will last less then 2 months. I will not be staying on base. I asked my supervisor if I need a work visa. He said no because I'm working on base. Is this true? I hope so. My plane leave next week and I don't have a visa. When I get to immigration and tell them I'm there for work, I'm pretty sure they are going to ask to see a work visa. Any one have any experience with this?

Describe 'civilian': Are you Civil Service on TDY/TAD orders?
DOD empoyees on orders do not require work visa

Sorry! I don't know what TDY/TAD means. I'm not a DOD employee. I'm just a sub-contractor for an American company. Do not work for any kind of government agency.
Installing RAM?
You should have been given some orders. If not, then I guess you'd have to come here on a tourist visa and get it changed to SOFA when you get all the paperwork.

You are going to need a LOI (letter of intent) from who ever is contracting you to do work for this period of time. I would advise against traveling to Japan without the proper visa or orders/paperwork.
Well, unless his company is paying for the trip. If that's the case, I'd come here anyway. If they **** up, you won't be able to work, but at least you'll get to see a part of Japan at their expense. ROR.

Didn't your company give your travel paperwork like orders to go to Japan for work? Are you flying into the Japanese airport or only through the military bases on military transportation like the AMC flight? You might be considered SOFA while you're here, so will need to be on orders. You should really talk to your company, boss or someone there.

Definately get your paperwork in order before you get on the plane; Japanese immigrations does not accept ignorance (not knowing) as an excuse when entering the country. If you get your pp stamped with a 90 day vistor/tourist visa, you are not allowed to work. You need to ask your sponsor, supervisor, etc. these questions and get concrete answers.

Also, when you go through immigration and tell them you are here to work but dont have a visa or orders..you WILL be detained.
What base are you working on? What company do you work for? What job are you going to do?

Dude just show up, like a regular tourist, get your passport stamped and come in. If they ask you why your here tell them you came to enjoy the beaches and beautiful girls. Once youre in it really won't matter and your only going to be working here for 2 months anyway.

They will probably think you're here to kidnap kids.
