IPhone V IPod Touch

So I was doing some research on the Iphone. They're definitely cool but for me personally I like my AU service and my 5.1 MP camera w/ SD slot. So I started researching IPod Touch and you can do a lot of the cool stuff IPhone does with the Touch, just w/out phone and camera. Also you have to be in a wi-fi area to use the web.

So, I'm sure different people have different needs and/or preferences in a phone and in a digital media device but for me sticking w/ AU and my current phone and upgrading my IPod to a touch is the way to go.

Thoughts, suggestions, experiences?

I don't make that many phone calls, so for me, the iPhone is the best choice. With the data plan, I'm connected to the internet almost anywhere I go. Granted reception sucks in some areas and the 3G network can be very sluggish at times. Seeing how cheap phone call plans aren't a necessity for me, there's no need for me to choose another carrier. The only way I'd consider switching providers is if they would support the iPhone and would offer a cheaper (unlimited) data plan.

Or wirelessly log into the Music marketplace (without even needing a computer present) to browse, purchase, preview new tracks. Sayy...Can you wirelessly beam your favorite tracks to another user's device to sample?

Get one from the store? Can't find the store? Well, thats ok, just google it, call someone, or better yet GPS your way there with integrated google maps including 3D, 1st person view from google street view. (You know, on your super sweet, Android platform Gphone!:thumbup1:)

You can download TV shows, movies, apps, and music over WIFI without a computer.

Looks and sounds sweet. I'd be game to try making the switch but I have a pretty big ITunes library and I'm sure it would be a major pain to convert. Thanks though.

well as a matter of fact, the company Alienware was in supposedly in the development to release an Android platform phone. Don't know if they scrapped that project or not.

IMHO the prototype was butt ugly. It was clearly and instantly recognizable as an Alienware product though. :rolleyes:

The only thing that makes the new zune even remotely interesting is the multi-touch screen, which would make typing faster. But because it isn't a phone, I probably wouldn't be doing much typing on it, because I wouldn't be texting or IMing.

The DJ on there had a pretty hot yet fairly youthful sounding voice. She would switch between English and Japanese like isa mentioned. Plus Nancy's show is on at a later time than what Happy Island was usually on. Who knows, might not be the only bilingual DJ out there. :D

So I'm thinking of grabbing the 32 gb IPod Touch but wonder if the fourth gen will be out in a few months for the same price plus a camera. Idon't really need camera, cause my phones is great but it would be nice to take a shot on the go and then Email it right from the device for no extra charge. With the phone I gotta pop out the SD card and throw it in the computer at home then Email it, or get charged to E-mail it from the phone.

Ipods don't vary in prices. Apple just released new versions at the beginning of this month. The older version is probably cheaper now. The 8 gig one did not change. They added a new 64 gig and updated the 32 gig.

Newer ones have the faster processor and bigger memory. :)

Yes, the only one not updated was the 8gig. I doubt the PX/BX has the third generation yet but stranger things have happened.

I checked Best Denki and they didn't have them. Didn't bother going to Yamada or Kojima. I figure they probably don't even have the 3rd gens yet. Going to save myself about 5,000 yen and order the 32gb on Amazon for $279.99.

I know for a fact the apps exist, because i used to use the app on my old Gphone. (not beating a dead horse, just, its the example I have) so the short answer is yes.

Unfortunately, I DO seem to remember another member posting that they could not seem to get the app to fully function on their Iphone. some sort of restriction? I don't know for sure. I'm sure someone here could find/link to the thread...

The Skype route would cost me like 5 bucks a month so if that SIP-VOIP option is free I guess I'd try that.

Anyone know how much prepaid minutes through skype are? Instead of the 5 a month for unlimited. It's cheap but I may not use it too often so minutes may be better.

The touch doesn't have a mic or a mic plug, unless i am missing something, thought this would rock my world if it did. if you figure it out tell me! i still have the scype app on my phone, most people from the states call me from computers (scype to scype) so we use the messaging function when i am on the touch.

If I were to venture a guess, I'd say that the Air Force folks have the highest concentration of softbank users. Most of the non-US folks I hang out with live near yomitan, so perhaps softbank usership being the majority there is an anomaly. Either way... even though the argument againt the iphone might be better in the states, I'd still rather pay for the convenience.

So I started researching IPod Touch and you can do a lot of the cool stuff IPhone does with the Touch, just w/out phone and camera. Also you have to be in a wi-fi area to use the web.

So, I'm sure different people have different needs and/or preferences in a phone and in a digital media device but for me sticking w/ AU and my current phone and upgrading my IPod to a touch is the way to go.

Thoughts, suggestions, experiences?

If you get one, get 16G or more, the new 32G also have camera and videocamera (not previously available on the 2nd gen touch).
mine is an 8G and it's almost full with only 1400 (or so) songs and around 1000 photos stored.

I like the i-phone, but not AT&T, so I stayed with my network and my blackberry for phone and work stuff. The i-pod touch works great with wi-fi and some of the apps load quicker than they do on my blackberry.
The 32g retails for around $400 here in GA, but the basic 8G model can be had for half of that.

If you already have a mobile provider that your'e happy with, I'd suggest to keep them, and get the ipod touch as an 'extra'..

I need a case and screen protector as I will carry it in my pocket a lot. Almost decided to get a full cover case but think if I'm careful, a back case and screen protector will do. What do you all use or recommend case-wise?

Apple just released the new Nano which has a camera and FM radio tuner built in. I'd bet money that we'll see this in the next iPod Touches. In typical Apple fashion, they probably put it on the cheaper iPods (Nano) first so people would rush out and buy those and then after 6 months they'll release the new iTouches with the new features getting people to spend even more money.

I have an au phone and a 16GB iTouch (jailbroken) and I'm content. I have absolutely no desire to get an iPhone...especially since the areas I spend most of my time have extremely weak signal and the 3G network can be frustratingly slow. If au supports the iPhone in the future (very doubtful), then I would consider getting one. It would depend on what features the iTouch has and if I'm happy with my current phone (which I am).

You probably don't need a screen protector. The screen is already very scratch resistant. I've dropped my iTouch on the floor of my car and the sidewalk in front of my house countless times and there's still not a scratch on it (except on the back where it's all silver and shiny, but the screen is as good as new). The new iPhone 3GS also has an oil resistant screen which is pretty nice so I've heard.

Yeah, and the camera on the Nano is video only. That seems weird and I'd rarely use it. FM radio would be ok, but over here not really. I think I'll be quite satisfied w/ my new 32gb 3rd gen Touch just the way it is. :)

A little paranoid about my new toy but after some light research considering leaving it uncased and screen uncovered in my pocket. I don't care about smudging and scratching the silver back really and various forums have many claims that the screen itself is quite strong and fairly scratch resistant (no need for screen protector). Do you all use screen protectors?

No screen protector or case on mine. I've had mine since December and the screen is just fine. I'm actually impressed considering how all previous iPods would scratch all to hell if you even blew on it too hard. I don't use a case because I don't care if the shiny part gets all scratched. I really like the thinness of the iTouch and a case will just bulk it up.

Edit: I'd get a case if I was going to throw it in a bag or something though. I'd be worried about it getting crushed...had my old 5th gen iPod get crushed a couple years back. My iTouch is usually in my pocket or under my steering wheel hooked up to my stereo so I'm not too worried about it.
