Do the cameras there end up being cheaper? should i buy a dlsr here in the states? or wait till i get to okinawa?

I think you're better getting a fancy ($300+) digital camera stateside, because there is more of a selection and competitive pricing. If you just want a simple(<$300) point and shoot digicam to throw in your purse or keep in the car, it can wait until you get here. Be sure to enter the JU forum photo contests when you get your camera. :D
