Is it true that if you have a webcam, people can capture the imagine?
I think not, but my husband says yes, because its over the web and its free and some other things I can't remember.
I personally think he is just a lil paranoid.:grin1:

Yes you can. There are apps to do it if you are viewing their camera via yahoo or msn. Hell, you can capture single frames by just doing a print screen. So I guess your nudie pics are floating out there on the net.
Sorry

Your computer can also be remotely accessed and anything on it opened, to include your webcam.
You would have no idea, more than likely that it even occurred, just by you computer being left on, or even with you working on it.

Haha, remember back orifice? by Cult of the Dead Cow...
There was some kid that "fixed" his teachers laptop, but he also put in a special script that would constantly snap pictures from the built in webcam and email the pics to him. The teacher had no idea this was going on until she took it to a shop to find out why the camera access light kept coming on.

OH dang, that I didnt know. I highly doubt someone would take the time to do that to me as an example. Like I said, my husband as always forbid me to even show my pregnant belly. He said, someone could just get the imagine. I always thought he was exaggerating and I thought that it was MY WEBCAM ( ignorance I know ) but I guess I gotta start paying more attention to him.
Thank you much ;)

Eventually people will be able to step straight through your monitor and into a room in your house, physically entering your home w/out the need of a door or window.

This is what happens when women think their husband is just some dummy who doesn't know what he's talking about.
Nobody is going to hack your webcam without reason. Be nice to programmers, and be careful to not make enemies who have money. Keep your computer protected as well as it is only a matter of time before malware is written to control masses of webcams and send data back to www.watchmejackoff.com (if it doesn't already exist).

In my case I have a lot of respect for my husband's work/knowledge , the reason why I doubt him about this one topic, its because we have had some conversations about pictures/web cam incidents that have been a reason for a healthy argument with no consequences.
It's always good to be able to discuss this issue with other people, I like to hear opinions and most of it, I think I learned new things every day.

But you can't argue something like this without knowing anything about IT. You can discuss it, but you can't even begin to tell your husband he is wrong.
I can think of several reasons why this would be difficult to achieve without malware. It would be more difficult to actually physically hack your computer's webcam from behind whatever network you are on than it would be for your husband to accidentally download malware while surfing porn that gave a remote computer access to your webcam.
The malware reason would be more realistic. Someone would have to go way out of their way to tap into your camera.
Darlin', it's true. I'm looking at you right now. Wave!!

Everyone's totally kidding with you. If you give DK your information he can "secure" your webcam connection for you. He does it for a lot of women around the island, I think it might be part of his job at JU, but I'm not sure.
Secure it to my website. :D

I'm talking about you arguing with your husband for the sake of arguing. If that's cool with your husband, more power to you. You said he walks off into the other room, though.

Guy called one of the radio shows in my area and said he was a programmer (radio show about new tech coming out) and said he nows how to implant a virus in something like a pdf file that when emailed to you and you open it up, it gives him a back door into being able to remotely access your pc anytime. Can turn your camera on and watch you without you ever knowing it.
Don't know if that's possible, but I find it likely based on the ever expanding capabilities of computers and programming.

From what I've heard, it's possible to embed viruses in JPEG's. Through steganography, this is definitely possible. I don't know how you'd actually extract the virus and run it, though. They're probably using a whole different method than that, though as the steganography route would be impractical for various reasons. Well, as far as I know. I'm not a steg pro...

would it have anything to do with the process of extracting a file? Like once the pdf file is opened or extracted or something then an auto run virus hidden in it gets activated?

Oh well. It would take a whole 30 seconds of someone watching through my cam for the hacker to kill him or her self out of depression. All that time spent writing program just to have it wasted on me. It's not even worth the time spent writing the hook email.

One thing to remember though if your webcam has an indicator light when it comes on there is no way to power on the camera without the light coming on. It's the same circuit. There is no way to write a program to just turn the camera on.

http://consumerist.com/2010/01/if-your-ps3-thief-is-a-moron-you-can-macgyver-its-recovery-via-psp.html
A theft victim claims he tracked down (http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?message.uid=44723040) the guy who made off with his PS3 and several video games by using his PSP to turn on his console from afar and use the camera to snap an image of the bad guy.
The story is a fascinating example of technology in action, but bear in mind it wouldn't have worked unless the thief hooked up the camera and stared into it just as the victim turned it on remotely. The odds of that happening are slim, since there are almost no PS3 games that require the camera, so there's very little reason to have it hooked up.
If you steal a PS3 dont connect it to the interwebs.... O.O

yes, a screen capture tool would work assuming that you have already given them access to your video. if you have not given them access to your video, then they would have to actually hack, or keylog(with screen cap) or packet sniff your comp of some shit like that. And at that point we are getting so deep into breaking into your shit that webcam is a moot point. I mean, if they can do THAT stuff, then none of your shits safe, because they almost certainly already have your desktop, your folders, your email passwords, etc.

so out of curiousity, considering the type of illegal access actions someone woul dhave to take to get the image off your webcam,
if you guys really think there's that credible a risk of intrusion, I'll assume you don't check your bank statements online of buy shit off amazon?
I mean, just me, but my credit card info seems just a bit more damaging than naked pics of my ass, and if they have access to one, they have access to the other right?
