You forgot housing areas too. Can't the streets just go straight up and down? How are you supposed to find anything if there are multiple 2, 3, 4 and even 5 way stops on the way to where you're going? :cursing:

Lack of parking in Naha is a big drawback to me. The fact they dont have parking at the monorail station doesnt make sense to me since most tourists would be likely to use it. (Note: I heard they were building parking at one of the stations.)

I'm not used to urban areas, so the fact that I have to find parking in a general area of where I want to go is inconvenient for me. But I think most of it is just me not being here long enough to know how to get somewhere.

i have to vote for bad drivers, people cant just go! stopping for no reason, stopping before you turn, turning in front of other cars. it's not that much worse here that it is in most places, they just dive bad slower, where as like LA they drive like asses but do it fast.

i'd have to say the slick roads. i can deal with the bad drivers, lack of turn signals, stopping for no reason, taking forever to make a simple turn, lack of parking in some places, and most small roads but i've been in one accident too many due to slick roads. and when my car does slide i'm not even going near the speed limit. you'd think they'd find a way to pave the roads to help battle the "coral dust" problem that people say causes the sliding.

Korea has some of the deadliest roads to walk or drive on:

Korea has the highest pedestrian death rate among OECD states and the Korean police are partly responsible for that number. The number of pedestrians who died from traffic accidents reached 4.61 in every 100,000 people in 2007, according to the 2007 OECD statistics quoted by the Korea Transport Institute yesterday.

With the record, Korea far exceeded Hungary, which was ranked second in the list with 2.86. Greece and Portugal followed with 2.11 and 2.02 respectively. Japan turned out to be relatively safe with 1.9 in every 100,000. Korea also other states in the number of pedestrian deaths per every 10,000 cars, with 1.36 - almost five times higher than Japan's record of 0.2.

Over three quarters of pedestrian deaths in Korea occurred in narrow side streets with a width of 13 meters or less. "Cars are often given priority in residential areas, greatly deteriorating the walking safety of pedestrians," said an employee of the KTI. "The introduction and expansion of exclusive pedestrian streets is required in order to reduce the high accident rate."
The pedestrian safety level shown in the United Kingdom and Japan were highly contributable to the introduction of such system, he said.

While Korea struggles to rid itself of such an unenviable status, its police are increasingly adding to the overall traffic accident rate. The number of traffic accidents caused by police vehicles has risen from 1,216 in 2006 to 1,352 in 2007 and to 1,733 last year, according to the data submitted by the National Police Agency to Rep. Shin Young-soo of the ruling Grand National Party. The number of resulting casualties also rose from 500 in 2006 (two deaths) to 569 in 2007 and to 685 last year (two deaths).

Accidents caused by police vehicles as of the end of July reached 1,116 or 5.26 in average per day, leading to 311 injuries. If the trend continues for the rest of the year, there will have been an increase in police accidents, but resulting injuries will be down from last year.

"Whereas the government is spending an average of 600 billion won ($486 million) every year to reduce traffic accidents, the police are cutting down on such efforts by threatening the citizens' lives," said Rep. Shin.

On the other hand, traffic accidents caused by citizens involving police officials or vehicles have also steadily risen over the years, from 387 in 2006 to 451 in 2007 and to 541 last year.

I have to say, lack of parking. I have no problem taking my time driving when I have plenty of time to find a place. But there's nothing that sucks worse when you want to actually get out of your car, you have to park several blocks from where you want to go because you don't know where to park.

Over the weekend, I was staying at a hotel that only had 4 parking spots...yes, 4. And they were taken up, so I used some public parking lot next to a department store. Well, they closed their gates after midnight, and I woke up and walked outside with a polite sign on my door reminding me not to park there between midnight and 8:30, despite the fact nobody uses those spaces. :cursing:

I can name only one place worse than the Philippines for traffic (or, uh, everything): Bangladesh.

http://static.panoramio.com/photos/original/7966102.jpg

And believe it or not, people don't go slow when it's this crowded - they actually go quite fast. When I was in Dhaka, I spent most of the time on edge thinking we were going to crash into another bus in the lane opposite of ours (and they don't really use "lanes," everybody is just kind of in an unsaid agreement to use one side of the road for going one way, another for another...and meanwhile some random asshole is loitering in the middle of the road, trying to sell popcorn or whatever to passing vehicles).

I came here after 7 years in Iwakuni. In mainland Japan, you gotta watch out for the Japanese drivers. The Americans are the safer drivers there. Here in Okinawa, It is the exact opposite; you gotta watch out for the American drivers. In addition, the scooter and motorcycle drivers are absolutely terrible here. Taxi drivers seem to have some sanity here compared to mainland Japan.

SnaFu

Your right Mizzes V in that there are probably a disproportionate number of rude American drivers out there who are always in a hurry to get to the next red light.

It amazes me that the locals spend roughly the equivalent of $3,000.00 and still don’t understand the rules of the road. I had to take a condensed version of their road test in order to get my stateside license converted to Japanese and I can tell you that the test is a joke. If you apply the techniques required to pass the test you are probably more likely to get in an accident. Especially when it is raining. Not to mention that if you are getting a manual transmission license you don’t need to know how to use the clutch. I seen a chick on her 8th or 9th try (I forget) pass the test because she finally was able to check off all the boxes required to pass the test. Only one thing… Being able to navigate the course without popping the clutch and stalling numerous times is not considered a show stopper. I guess being able to take off from a dead stop and change gears is not even evaluated. She still freak’in passed.

Let’s not forget about the "overly polite" Japanese drivers who create hazardous situations by being courteous instead of following the rules of the road. If someone has right of way they need to get off their ass and go! Some of these people are so damn indecisive that you don't know if you should go or wait for them to make up their mind. Or they stop for what appears to be yielding then as soon as you commit the jackass jumps on the accelerator and hits the brake again. WTF!

Many don't use their side view mirrors,

There is so much shit on the back dash in some cars that the rear view mirror is worthless,

Some seem to think that turn signals are meant to show that you have just begun to turn instead of using them to alert others of intention ahead of time.

By the way P Chan, that "impenetrable wall of 3 cylinders on 58" was a work of art... Thanks!

Glad to get that off me chest.

BAD DRIVERS - they think throwing their hands in the air 'gomen' is acceptable safe driving i.e. turning, crossing multiple lanes, stopping anywhere anytime, backing up in the middle of the road, speed up to slow down, oh and driving while holding kids in their laps....

Of course add the parking - but that is only a problem for 'Y' plates! Everywhere is acceptable parking for the nationals - hey they are home and we are visiting.

The condensed driving test to convert a foreign license is definately difficult if you try to run the course by using safe driving tecniques.

My advise to anyone who has to take the test is to go to one of the driving schools as close to your road test date as possible and pay 5000 yen for an hour so you know how to drive the course to pass.

Ever wonder why so many people take off like they are leaving the starting line of a drag race only to hit 30 or 40 clicks max speed and ride the brakes like a horse? Take the test and you will no why.

You have to remember that many are first generation drivers. Most if not all of us basically understood the mechanics of driving by the time we were 10 years old probably from watchin our parents drive. Flow of traffic, merging, right of way, ect. It is almost second nature by the time we are old enough to drive and just need to develope a feel for the vehicle and get some confidence. (Just a generalized statement.)

Asia on the otherhand. It's kind of hard to develope those second nature skills when your view of the road was sitting in the back of a Baht bus or mass transportation was the equivalent of climbing on top of a truck hauling garbage.

You are definately right though. I have seen some crazy shit in other parts of Asia which should. No comparison to Japan.

I kind of got used to the Okinawan way of driving and it doesn't bother me much. I like the politness on the road. If you follow the "Okinawa driving rules" it becomes much easier to drive. They are Okinawans and the driving reflects their nature of "whatever". But I would feel safer if I knew that people over 70 have some driving reflex test once in a while. I always wonder if an old person passes on the red light is because she/he doesn't notice the intersection or because there is any other reason.
Still hate taxi drivers.
China drivers are crazy and must have some suicidal mentality.

Yes, the speedlimit is "too slow", the hurry to still cross before red light, parking sucks. But to be honest, its by far better then in most other counties I was driving a car.

What is the biggest problem with driving on Okinawa?

It's a common practice on Okinawa where a car forces his way on to the main road and commonly raises his hand to ask for forgiveness.....This freezes the jack out of me. I believe this alone messes up many foreigners here as they don't expect anyone to pull out into traffic like this. Another thing that bothers me are all those cell phone users who think just pulling over satisfies the law. I've seen some real bad spots where they stopped around curves and all.

i guess i've gotten used to driving here, my biggest complaints are signaling at the very last second and coming to a near stop to turn or change lanes and pacing, when there are two cars on a two lane road right next to each other going the same speed, no one can get around them and often they are going slower than the speed limit. i find this alot on the 23 and the 85.

people do that on the express way too. The Right lane is for passing how hard is it. when I am going the speed limit and passing on the left somthing is wrong.

driving on this island is only enjoyable when its early sunday morning when you can at least drive 50kph and pass through at least 3 traffic lights without a red.

any other time is usually a pretty miserable experience.

Yeah... I totally agree. I leave for Foster in 10 minutes and I am so not looking forward to the drive on 330 tonight. :cursing:

I hate driving everywhere except on I95 at 0300 in the morning from Spfld to Hfrd with no other cars on the road.

I only drove 95 during midnight hours. so glad not to deal with traffic, I got better gas mileage too. Less cars on the road = faster, safer, economical drive

I like driving so long as a) the drive is under 15 minutes and b) I can take backroads the whole way. Then it's a relaxing experience. But all it takes is one yellow-plate car to get in front of you and clog up the road for ten minutes...

i've found back roads not really to be any sort of time saver unless there is gridlock. plus they are in much worse condition as well.

They save me 15 minutes every day each direction.

That's 3900 minutes saved per year (minus holidays), 65 hours. Not bad. Maybe 58 or so if you throw in holidays, but back up to 65 or so as I use this road anytime I go that direction.

Ding, ding!!!

I drive from the top of Jagaru all the way down to 58 everyday. If no one is in front of me, I can pop it in neutral near the top and let gravity take over. If I get behind a yellow plate? Forget it. Brakes all the way down.

You are the exception to the rule then. You are less than 95 years old.

I bet you do.

Because whether I'm driving our white plate or our yellow plate I drive the slow ass speed limit.

As much as I hate rules it's sometimes easier to follow the rules then to get pulled over and pay an expensive ass ticket.

But then again you are a doctor some maybe a ticket is chump change?:D:D:D

Yeah, it always seems to be one or the other. It becomes even more evident on the expressway when you see a van speed by going 140km/hour in the torrential downpour. lololol. wtf.

Scooter driver/riders. I about took out three of them switching lanes. They whipped around from a car and thank goodness I was paying attention. Otherwise, all three would have crashed into the back of my car.

..........Should have let them crash into the back of your car ...especially if you were at a stop light..............wait ....it would have still been your fault somehow .......:scratchchin:
I almost run over at least 3 everyday.....they seem to have death wishes zipping in and out between cars.......:-|

If I was 100% found NOT to be at fault, maybe I would have let them. I also agree that they all seem to have death wishes. Ugh... >.<

LOL the traffic here is nothing compaired to DC! Only problem here is I am really afraid I will be owning a scooter. Those crazy things freak me out! One day I am going to forget to look down the side of the car before I merge off the main road. Splat! The kids joke about painting little scooters on the side of the van for the near misses! It's hundreds!
