Through some high tech trickery, I was able to get signed up for the 14 day free trial of FFXI. My main character is Jagaimo on the Shiva server. So far, I'm kind of liking it. Dying sucks though since you lose a bunch of experience. I've yet to figure out the value of "Disengage"...i figured that would let me run away from an enemy, but no matter how fast I run, I'll still get my ass whooped and lose experience. Leveling is slow, but grinding is a bit more fun than in WoW. It just has a very "Final Fantasy" feel to it which I like. I'm not a big fan of the auction house. The auction house in WoW is 100x better and I guess I've been spoiled. I would also kill for a minimap. It sucks having to type /map (or go through the menu to get to the map) and constantly check to make sure I'm taking the right path.
Anyone got tips for FFXI noobs like me? The one thing I'm trying to figure out now is how to get those keyboard shortcuts I see in the Misc 2 options to work. For example, 'A' is supposed to be a shortcut for 'Attack', but all it does is make me say 'A'. I must be missing something.
Unrelated to FFXI, I got a key for the open beta of Aion today and tried that out. It's a whopping 9GB download, but worth it. The graphics are amazing and it plays very similar to WoW, but with a very asian feel to it. The character customization is pretty good too. It's not customizable like avatars in PlayStation Home are (Home gives you sliders to configure cheekbones and wrinkles and stuff), but it's much more than what WoW offers (and a shit load more than what FFXI offers). Aion could be the game to get me off WoW permanently (not so sure if I'm going to continue with FFXI after the trial...it's up in the air though).
