Does anyone know if here in Japan you can buy a new US Spec Honda, or Toyota to bring back to the states? From want I have seen the prices are the same if not better than in the states on new Honda's. I know BMW, Mercedes, Volvo and several other foreign car manufactures make US spec cars to bring to the states while stationed overseas. :scratchchin:

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/CARS/RULES/IMPORT/elig060109.pdf
There is a list of cars on that page that are eligible to TMO (free) back to the states, however if the vehicle you want isn't on that list there are many import/export shops on the island. That method will cost you a hefty $11,000 though. :scared:

i had to roll my eyes at the Ferraris and Lamborghinis, really how many people in the military own one of these? However I did like that they permit some RX-7s and R33 Skylines.

Be careful. I have run across vehicles that were brought into this country that I was unable to get parts for.

What I like to do is buy a New US Spec Honda Fit or an Insight (both are made here in Japan) drive it while I am here in Okinawa and ship it back to the states or Europe when I PCS. While I am collecting all of this COLA. Any one know if any Honda dealers would do this here? Or does Honda USA have such a monopoly on US spec Honda's being sold outside the US. Reason I know this is I talk to a German Honda Dealer about purchasing a US Spec CRV and Honda Deutschland would not allow him to import one do to agreements with Honda USA. So, I went ahead and bought a CRV back in the states and shipped it over instead and shipped it back to storage when I PCS'd here. You can ship US spec cars back to the states with no problems as long as they are "US Specs".
I also bought a new US Spec 05 Honda Odyssey EX-L w/DVD for a fair price (while I was stationed in Germany), through the Auto Exchange (sister company of AAFES car sales just off base with different models of cars, http://www.mcs-autoexchange.com )had a full US/European warranty. I sold it when I got my orders to come here. If I wanted to I could have shipped that vehicle back to states also if I wanted to but at my expense.

Why wouldn't an off base dealer let you drive out with a car if you got cash in hand? They won't give you monthly payments so you will have to use an on base bank for the loan.

The off base dealers do not sell US Specification Fits or Insights. What is sold off base here is for the Japanese market and will not go through DOT and customs unless you go thru a importer, I like to take back something that I can use back in the states without doing the conversions and all B/S of a non US Spec car (like what people do with the Skylines and RX-7's and such). I'm looking for a dealer that does what AAFES cars sales does but for Honda's. AAFES cars sales did offer Honda's back in the '90's but just in Germany.

The Honda's that were sold thru AAFES were made in the US i.e. Civic, Accord and Odyssey.
