Maybe starting out in a I HATE OKINAWA THREAD isn't the best way to get my answers, So here it is

What is going to make this place good?

How can inbound single military that are forced to live in the dorms make the most of this place?

And how about good Beach suggestions with directions? If you have a secret beach and your going to be a douche and keep it to yourself please stay away from here. How about a little teamwork that results in a better assignment for all?

1. cause you live on base does not mean you are restricted to base
2. get out see what you like, seriously I could name some things I like to do but you may not

I will say there is alot I hate about this place but in the same sentence there is some things I like. As far as the Military goes.....look at it as a 9-5 job.......do it and leave it at work. Go out meet people and dont get married to first yellow ass that drops it like its HAWT!!!!!! Dont make that mistake. Get here, have fun come out to our get togathers .

This whole living in the dorms rant is ridiculous. Why on earth do you even think you should live out in town as a single person???????

Why shouldn't I be able to live out in town? They let married couples live out in town and there are plenty of places that let single military live out in town this place is just not one of them. Why should an E-1 that's married that's been in for 4 months compared to an E-5 that's been in for 6 years get to live in a place off base that is literally 10 times the size of my place and not have to put up with half the bs that I do?

Richard Burns
08-22-2009, 09:14 PM
Because the married E1 doesn't rate base housing so he has to live in town.

In the Corps all E5s live in the barracks unless they pay rent off base out of their own money and even then will usually still keep a room there. I know it's comparing apples and oragnes but still. I've been in many of the barracks on Kadena. I don't see what there is to complain about.

The AF don't stand barracks duty.
You can hav girls in your room.
Yo can have as much alcohol as you want.
You don't field day your rooms.

I'll be more than happy to enlighten you, honestly I don't think a marine or ex marine will ever understand because their situation is or was always worse it's like telling your grandparents how rough you have it now days and they give the "back in my day" speech. The BS that I put up with that the married E-1 doesn't who I probably supervise and carry 2x the work load is room inspections, sharing a bathroom, sharing laundry facilities, being able to leave guests at my place while I'm gone, having to listen to everyone else's music all the time, having the fire alarm go off constantly because neighbors want to set it off, and just living in literally a 10x10 box that fits a twin size bed and the other bulky furniture that comes in the room and is mandatory to keep in the room. I don't even have my own oven. If I was to ever date a japanese local they are not going to want to hang out in my room it's way too small for 2 people, I dont even want to be there by myself. So this is all the BS I have to put up with living in the dorms just because I'm not married but anywhere else we would not be having this conversation. As for the marines well if your living conditions are worse than mine then I can't imagine but overall I just think your kind of set up for failure upon arriving at Kadena especially if your from a decent assignment in the states.

Sounds like C6 is speaking from experience:D:D:D

But I agree with C6, leaving work at work is a big thing. Keep trying to move off base, it will help with that. Also, what do you like to do? If you like the outdoors there are a ton of places you can hike up north. River hiking is fun becuase you just about always find waterfalls. There is one near the nago exit of the expressway that I went with a buddy once. It was a nice hike to a series of waterfalls but unfortunately it was once I first got here and I could never find it again. Then there is Taa Taki, that place is awesome, it's an easy hike, and a nice swim on a hot day. Geocaching can help you find a lot of cool places if you feel like getting into that. Oh and there are a few places in the mountains that you can camp, it's just a matter of finding them. Yonahadake comes to mind, but I'm not sure if you have to reserve spaces up there or not. Would make an awesome base of operations for exploring up north if you don't feel like putting up with the retards that camp at okuma.

Go pick up this book from the BX:

http://okinawaexplorer.com/

I can't tell you how many weekends I spent finding a ton of the places in that book. It's divded into different sections so that makes it easy to say "Oh I want to go north this weekend" and you can find a cool place up north.

Then there is diving, you can take that up. If you're not a diver you can at least go snorkeling. As far as beaches go, I couldn't help you with that. I've only been to a handful and most were for picnics so they weren't nice small beaches. I spent most of my time hiking, exploring, or diving. I take that back, the nicest beach I was on Minna Island.

http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs149.snc1/5529_110989229470_613619470_2313363_6249746_n.jpg

You can camp on minna island, but there isn't anything there and the ferry won't come back until 8am or so the next day.

You can also go visit the castles on island. Some of them are pretty small but katsuren has a nice view, nakagusuku is huge, and shuri has got some nice eye candy:D.

Then there are the outer islands. Places like Ie and Minna are just a short ferry ride from motobu. Other islands like Miyako, Ishigaki, Irimote, etc......you'd need to fly there. But IIRC the travel agency on kadena has packages for a hotel on Kume island. That's a nice place and you catch the ferry from naha port.

:edit: Then there are festivals. The beer fest is in September IIRC and it's close to base. That's always a good time:thumbup:

The first time I was in Okinawa (94-96) the popular saying amongst Marines was that there are generally three types of individuals here:

1) The Alcoholic
2) The PT freak
3) The bible thumper

Granted, these categories mainly reflect the single military member living in the barracks.
I used to spend all my time club hopping, hanging out at the seawall, getting drunk in the barracks and floating to countries all over Asian.

I am spending this tour as a married guy with kids. I spend my evenings club hopping (whether I am working in them or not), drinking with friends from JU (except c6 cause he is a sellout MF), spending time with the Japanese side of my family, going to out of the way fishing and snorkeling spots, going to the beach (check out Ikei island if you don't want to go to the ones here in Chatan (Araha, Tropical etc.).

If you want to know what events are going on in regards to nightlife over here, you might laugh but get on myspace. While the majority of Japanese use Mixi, alot of the 20-30 year olds are still messing around with myspace. There are plenty of events that are posted on people's pages. I'll make sure to send you a flyer when I host my next event.

Some people like Gate 2 street, but it is a shadow of its former self. You can still have a good time down there and I know many that do. It's just no longer my cup of tea. I don't know what type of music you like so I am not going to recommend and clubs in particular.

You are hitting the tail end of "Festival Season". You have the local ones and the ones that are put on by the bases. If you can deal with crowds and the heat, they are a good time.

If you feel adventurous and you don't have a car, jump on one of the buses, head down to Naha and just walk around. Don't act like a typical boot and stomp around the place with 5 of your best buddies from basic training. Go solo. Maybe take one other person so you can remember how to get home. You shouldn't leave Okinawa without a few thousand pictures because you will kick yourself in the butt later if you do.

Take some of the Japanese classes offered by UMUC. Some scoff at the idea, but it's better to know some basic Japanese than it is not to any at all. You world starts to open up when you can read the signs.

dk
08-23-2009, 02:05 AM
Any events marines are posting on their myspace pages are probably shitty events. The good events are the ones most marines don't know how to get to.

And no, that's not marine bashing. It's about the fact that there is MORE going on away from the bases than going on right outside the bases.

Ah, then yes, absolutely. :)

And the party scene really has seemed to dry up out here, but maybe I'm just out of the loop now that I'm satisfied just getting drunk with friends at bars instead of hitting up the clubs like I used to.

But how was the music?

There are hotties EVERYWHERE. I've never had the urge to go on any of those party cruises. Not my scene, I guess. Give me a club and a legitimate DJ and I'm good to go. By legitimate DJ, I mean a career DJ. One who actually creates music and has made a name for him/herself on an international level rather than just someone who just regurgitates other people's shit.

And that's not an attack or anything. That's just my definition. Occasionally, we get some decent ones on this island.

Well, seeing how I just got back tonight, I didn't make the cruise. I know the DJs that were spinning and they do alright for themselves.

Off topic, but since you brought it up. Isn't it a DJs job to play music? We are not talking about turntablists. We are talking about club DJs. Play good music, keep the BPMs on point so he doesn't kill the dance floor, have good transitions and incorporate a live mix every into his set every once in awhile.

The common DJ just plays music. You'll see them everywhere from birthday parties to pool parties to house parties to shitty clubs. The outstanding DJs go home and create their own originals or refactor other people's work into something new.

I've only known a few outstanding DJs on Okinawa. Two were American, and maybe two others were Japanese. The rest all fall under "common".

Now, of course, there can be differences in skill between common DJs. You'll have your experienced Club DJ who may have a decade or two of experience, and you'll have your dude who just learned to beat-match last week and thinks he's the shit.

I think the first thing to do when in a new place that seems to suck monkey butt is to have a positive attitude. :D <-- this goofy smile should be plastered on your face, which implies you're at least trying to like a place. the second thing you should do is get away from the base and do something you like to do within legal limits of course. If you like to eat, eat at random restaurants and point at the pictures; if you like to exercise, go runing, biking, kayaking or swimming. If you like shopping, try some of the open markets or random street over there... no, no, over theeere. :p If you like beer and bbq, hang out with the JU folks.

Disclaimer: Unfortunately, there is nothing you can legally do about crappy drivers here, unlike stateside where you can at least shoot them. :D haha! :p

But the military is on call 24 hours a day. You can't do your job when you're tripping balls in your dorm room. I've said before that I'm for the legalization of drugs, but there has to be limits when it comes to your job.

I really didn't want to post anything but here goes. Stop your crying about how much this place sucks and start having fun. Go out, drink beers, and meet as many chicks as you can. Find one that has her own apartment and car. That way you can get drunk and then make her do the driving. And cuz she got her own pad it will get you out of the barracks.

It could also go to school while you are here. Lots of my friends have earned degrees here. It is really easy, UMUC hands out degrees. All you go to do is show up. Their customer service sucks, and the teachers are retards but if you want a free degree it is the way to go.

Bottom line is that Okinawa can be lots of fun. It is all what you make out of it.

good god man!!! listen homie...i lived in oki back from 99-01 as a single airman, on base in the dorms. i know things have changed over the years but i remember having a blast. it's really all about your attitude and the people you surround yourself with. okinawa is a beautiful place and there are many things to do. hiking, chilling on the beach with some brews, diving/snorkling, caving, checking out all the historical shit (castles, ww2 stuff, etc), bar-hopping, etc, etc, etc.

i also went back to oki from 04-08...this time married with a kid. somewhat different experience but, non-the-less, great.

you really need to just appreciate that you're experiencing something most people don't have the opportunity to. you're living in a place with a low crime rate, great food, beautiful surroundings, and you're making that nice cola cash flow.

now, i know the "different folks different strokes" concept applies in all scenarios but from what i've seen, many people who didn't appreciate the moment while living in okinawa came to realize how great of a place it truly is after then left it. adjust your attitude, get off base, leave work at work, and take advantage of your situation. don't be one of those people who squander their opportunity to live in such an awesome place only to regret it when they end up at robins afb. (yes, that was a jab at robins...**** this place!!!!!)
