Dont know how many of you shop in Japanese stores but to those that do maybe you have heard about minus ion phenomenon:w00t:. Ok minus ion is defined as;

Minus ions, called negative ions in the West, occur naturally in forests and streams, anywhere the water runs pure and the air is clean. Despite being unsupported by definitive medical evidence, the very presence of minus ions is widely believed to reduce stress and bring about positive feelings of well-being.

Ok I had to buy a small fan for my son, where his bed currently is placed is a bit warm and takes time for the a/c to cool the area around his bed. So I went to DeoDeo, had a shit load of points, over 20,000 yen worth:-| built up over the years and decided ok I'll get him a small clip type rotating fan that he can clip on to the headboard and keep him cool at night.

Well the damn fan I bought has two switches, one for the fan speed and another for the miraculous  minus ion, think of someone saying that in an echo chamber...minus ion....minus ion......

Anyway I ask the guy at DeoDeo wtf is all this minus ion and how in the heck can a simple ass fan have this miraculous power to relax....serious sounds of me farting and belching here:-|. The dude starts chuckling, takes a hard look at my face to see if I am serious or not, then pulls me aside and says...I have no friggin idea either. BUT if it says minus ion on it people buy the shit whether or not it is worth the price.

I figure wtf, I am buying this thing on my built up points and my kid needs the fan but hey folks DO YOU BELIEVE IN MINUS ION!

I have seen a show or two on Jpn TV about minus ions. My wife believes in them, too. Supposedly just any ol' water can have the effect, so long as it is pouring or splashing over you. We have never bought any particular devices made for that, though. But, think of how fresh you feel when you step out of the shower. Feels like a lot of negativity is washed off of you as you get ready to face the world, or the bed.

That feeling kinda almost makes me believe in them. But, not for sure.

I have no opinion either way, but your story cracked me up severely.

Especially this part.

I bet it's mostly gimmick, but I'm sure there is some truth to it.

The only ion thingy I've ever used with a positive experience is the Ionic Breeze (http://www.sharperimage.com/us/en/catalog/product/sku__SI867GRY) air purifier. I bought one for my 1BR apt, which I smoked in. It worked really well for me. I have an ion hair dryer and iron, purchased here, which I haven't noticed anything special about yet.

Hell my wife believes it in too. The only time I ever felt the so called minus ion was when I took the family to Hija falls, the water coming over the falls and the mist we felt there was like ...yeah so this is minus ion.

But now a stupid little fan....

My son turned it on tonight and there is this little green light that comes on that "tells" you that the "minus ion" atoms are flowing over his head. I asked him if he felt any difference and he just looked at me as if ......well if you have kids you just have to know the look. Like Dad what tree do you think I just fell out of. :p

I bet it's mostly gimmick, but I'm sure there is some truth to it.
Where.....educate me please!

Anal Beads!!!!

My thoughts exactly, next time I should be the one trying to explain this to a customer at the store.

But all bs aside my son is just happy to have a nice cool breeze flowing over his sleeping head.:D

This sounds odd, but try it. Turn the fan on and smell the air coming out of it after a moment. The air emitted from my ion fan was actually "cleaner" smelling than from my regular fan. It was weird in that nifty way.

Was your other fan dirty? Could have just been the plastic they made the ion fan out of. Kinda like a new car smell, but more like a new fan smell:D

I....hiding my head under the pillow here a moment...did just that.....:43::-| felt like an idiot too.

No noticeable difference, BUT it could have been due to my having a few too many "adult" beverages tonight, which I am still currently enjoying.

Tomorrow is a holiday and I am OFF....different subject...two weeks in a row, Monday off. YEAH.

yeah, it could've been the materials used in the ion fan. don't think it was becuz the other fan was dirty or not. the smell kinda reminded me of an air conditioner. didn't have an a/c back then.

An ionizer may have positive or negative effects.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ionizer

When we lived in NYC some time ago, we had an ionizer with hepa filter. Worked very well and the air felt cleaner. My wife noticed that there was less dust in the apt.

However in Okinawa, the air is much cleaner so an ionizer may not be needed unless you live next to 58 or 330. Most better brand Japanese-made a/c units come with a built-in ionizer, i.e. Daikin, which you can turn on or off.
