good morning, everyone:)!

i was just wondering if there is anyone here who knows a board of education that hires ALT (Assistant Language Teachers) with a monthly fixed salary (that is, regardless of the holidays >>> Golden Week, and other red calendar days, except the summer vacation). from what i have heard so far, almost all of the boards of education hire foreign teachers on a part-time contract...that is, a daily wage. so, if there is a typhoon, an ALT cannot expect a pay on that particular day:(.

I think you'll have better luck working for a big eikaiwa chain like Nova or Geos if you are looking for a fixed monthly salary with holiday pay.

i have heard many stories about NOVA and GEOS violations as regards paying their employees. as far as i know, NOVA is dealing with a court case right now about "robbing" their students the number of class hours that the latter have paid for.

but, i guess, it's just like that with the boards of education then. with a typhoon, no pay. with a holiday, still no pay:-|.

Hi Dawn,

I think you'll find all the eikaiwa and other places like BOE have their ways of taking as much advantage as possible from the native English teachers, and giving back as little as possible. Exactly what tricks they use varies from place to place, but they all behave roughly the same.

For fair treatment, your best bet is often a smaller operation, someone's private business, or to go into business for yourself. There are foreigners who run conversation schools who will try to rip-off their employees just as much as any Japanese owner. Shop around before you accept any contract, and get as much info from as many sources as possible. No work situation will be perfect, but you can minimize the problems with some research.

Are you looking for next year? As you know the school year is already in session and BOE's are not going to be looking for any new people, if any, until probably February or March of next year.
