We just received a notice that certain baby monitors that're made for the U.S. aren't allowed here, because they interfere with cellular and radio waves. Supposedly there are also penalties for using the monitor, but nowhere on the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (http://www.soumu.go.jp/english/) website does it say anything about any of it.

Have any of you heard about this? know what the penalties are? think this is just a ploy to get us to buy Japanese electronics? think this is something to worry about? think this is something to worry about nine floors up and in the middle of farmland?

It's just so weird. :scratchchin:

It's true, I can find it on the internet yet. Same deal with cordless phones made in the US.

You can or can't find it on the internet? Is it a mega/gigahertz issue? The note mentions regulatory compliance, but not what it is. We've been using our baby monitor for two years without issue, and now suddenly, this bullshnit.

"I can't" All found so far was a PDF document for Misawa.

It's a frequency issue they are not tested for use in Japan and may cause interference with currently used devices.

I know it doesn't say baby monitors and it's 4 years old, still searching.

Comment from: Steve Schulz [Visitor] (http://avoidinglife.com/index.php/2005/08/31/us_cordless_phones_illegal_in_japan)
The following is a list of prohibited frequencies:
-49 MHz (awaiting guidance from CNFJ frequency manager)
-900 MHz (strictly prohibited)
-2.4 GHz (10 mW power limitation)
I know they increased the cordless phone power limitations to 5.8 Ghz a couple years ago, and started selling them on base. I'm thinking that the power thing is the problem, but want to know what the power limit is, so I can order one online asap.

We have been looking a this for a project and 2.4 and 5.8 gig ranges are okay to use here. Basiclly if you have a wireless router (which is about the power of a baby monitor) you are good if it is 2.4 and 5.8 ranges.

Great! thanks! ... Now, what does that mean? That's not written on the baby monitor info label anywhere.

You can hear alien signals with a baby monitor. It's true.

You should be able to check on the website what frquency the model you have operates at. If it is what is in the photo, I would venture to say you are in the 2.4 Gig range.

The monitor we have is 900 Mhz. I still can't find anything on the restrictions, guidelines or anything about such things online. :cursing:

Yes, but hyaku yen says they don't speak any English. :D I don't speak enough Japanese, so the conversation would be something like this...

me: nan hertzo daijyobu desuka?
them: eh? nani?

... and so forth and so on. :p

i would go on a limb and say for the most part you would be okay since baby monitors should be relatively low power transmitters. The probability of getting arrested for it is highly unlikely.

I would gather to think that the rule is set in place to keep retailers (i.e. AAFES) from mass selling and quite possibly causing a problem. And its also made to keep pirate radio and unlicensed broadcasters/transmitters from screwing up things (like traffic lights.)

The safe bet would be to buy a JP baby monitor.
