I'm off base and nothing to do with the bases. I did some brief work on base in the past but I was not SOFA. It was either staffing agencies or Shimagumi.

^ What is it, exactly, that you do?

If it takes more than two sentences to explain to me, I'll assume it's illegal.

Currently working on base, but I hate it. Common sense goes out the window when working with Marines in the IT field. Got a job lined up off base that I'll start in a couple months that is in no way dependent on the bases here.

Yes, my son, move away from the dark side, and follow the way of the Swartz...

I work on base and off base. My job off base is to make off base jobs become dependant on the bases. My on base job is to post in threads that don't have anything to do with me.

Shit, I'll take it. But yeah, it's not "so much money"..

I could drive a brand new $50,000 vehicle though.

Then congrats you're a baller. Okinawa cost of living is pretty low compared to the states.

Between my two jobs off-base I was working at the same time, I was able to bring home about Y450,000 a month plus whatever I took in freelance web design. Plus bonuses. I took a small pay cut with my base job after taxes and whatnot, but overall it is a much better job. Plus, the salary cap at my new job is pretty high for my "rank".

If I could make that much money at one job working off base, like your friend, I would have had an easier life. But JU is too good money to just throw away, and JU definitely can't afford to pay me what I'd need to be full-time. For a few years they were lucky enough to have me for about Y120,000 a month... I don't think anyone at JU makes much more than about Y150,000. Yeah, the job scene is so desperate off-base, people will work for just about anything.... It's really sad.

I am working on base as a contractor. Great gig, but I still follow all the regs for the SOFA status folks since I really like being here and do not want to act like an ass when an order comes down to get me and my family kicked out :D

looks like a pretty close run, on base just barely ahead of off base.
