Going retro. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/8117619.stm)

My dad had told me it was the iPod of its day.

He had told me it was big, but I hadn't realised he meant THAT big. It was the size of a small book.

When I saw it for the first time, its colour also struck me. Nowadays gadgets come in a rainbow of colours but this was only one shade - a bland grey.

So it's not exactly the most aesthetically pleasing choice of music player. If I was browsing in a shop maybe I would have chosen something else.

From a practical point of view, the Walkman is rather cumbersome, and it is certainly not pocket-sized, unless you have large pockets. It comes with a handy belt clip screwed on to the back, yet the weight of the unit is enough to haul down a low-slung pair of combats.

When I wore it walking down the street or going into shops, I got strange looks, a mixture of surprise and curiosity, that made me a little embarrassed.

As I boarded the school bus, where I live in Aberdeenshire, I was greeted with laughter. One boy said: "No-one uses them any more." Another said: "Groovy." Yet another one quipped: "That would be hard to lose."

My friends couldn't imagine their parents using this monstrous box, but there was interest in what the thing was and how it worked.

In some classes in school they let me listen to music and one teacher recognised it and got nostalgic.

It took me three days to figure out that there was another side to the tape. That was not the only naive mistake that I made; I mistook the metal/normal switch on the Walkman for a genre-specific equaliser, but later I discovered that it was in fact used to switch between two different types of cassette.

That part about mistaking the metal/normal switch on the Walkman for a genre-specific equalizer made me laugh. Now a days that's almost exactly how equalizer presets are labeled, something that obviously didn't exist during the Walkman days.

Another notable feature that the iPod has and the Walkman doesn't is "shuffle", where the player selects random tracks to play. Its a function that, on the face of it, the Walkman lacks. But I managed to create an impromptu shuffle feature simply by holding down "rewind" and releasing it randomly - effective, if a little laboured.

LMAO :w00t: I don't even care for the shuffle feature anyhow. :)

Damn I feel old now. \:-)

I'm surprised they still sell them new. I've seen a few Discmans or CD walkmans around, but not so many now. I actually laughed aloud at the metal/normal part also. sigh. ゆかしい

Dude won't give up his 8 Track collection though. He still thinks tapes are a fad.

As much as I loved my walkman, for listening to music on the go, cd and cassette free is the way to go, because a cd and cassette will melt and scratch/tangle. :( I lost many albums that way. I wish I had bought more vinyl though for the nostalgia of it.

As long as Rahzel is around, beatboxing will never be considered retro.
There are also guys like this dude who are keeping it new and relevant.

Muthaf, an alien race from the planet Noise. They are universally known for their excellent beat boxing and break dancing skills. The most notable Muthafs being Ozone and Turbo, they brought the Electric Boogaloo to other species across the universe. In fact they said we owe them 7 dollars for teaching us suckas how to dance.

Either 13-year-olds in Britain are receiving and internalizing a significantly higher level of education than Americans, or that wasn't written by no kid! Anyway, that short battery life led to rechargeable batteries, which eventually led to the batteries in your iPod now. That's a history lesson for ya, kid...

Glad I'm not the only one who thought that was very well written for a 13-year-old. :) Maybe he's just an exceptional lad.

I remember when my dad first bought a Walkman. He swore it sounded better than real life! Hell, I was in college before I bought my first CD..2Pac, All Eyez on Me. My dad had a CD player (shelf system) for years but it was too expensive for me to afford one. I think the first CD I can remember him buying was George Michael 'Faith" (who knew then?)

Hell, I'll go you one better. I bought one of the first iPods cause I was in the infantry then and didn't want to lose all my CDs. This was the time when there were like 10 other off-brand MP3 players out and nobody knew which one to buy. I bought my iPod for 400 bucks and it was big (by today's standards), black and white screen, and only played music. People laughed at me for spending that much on an iPod when there were other cheaper players around. I told them that this thing would be the future of music...who knew it would get this big??? Shoulda bought some damn stock instead of listening to those asses.
