No, I think the bases should stay....all except Futenma which should just disappear altogether.
Life would be boring without them.
Also, we will only be subject to more and more concrete skyscrapers and shopping centres.

No I like the bases here, imagine how dull it'd be and how many bars would have to close and nail salons and taxi drivers,it'd be the end of salsatinas gate 2 and saicolo!
And i agree more ugly apts and shopping malls...

Nah, things would just adjust. And gate 2 has been dead for many years. It's kinda like megatron burried in all that ice in Antarctica. It has a little life left in it, but it's just scraping by.

The bases should go. All of them. There is no reason to keep them on Okinawa. Zero.

This is true but though I'm not sofa I got friends that r and that sucks if they will loose their jobs or planned on getting stationed here and can't.

Hey, I am not paying taxes to support people who want to work overseas. People like me.
The real answer should have everything to do with necessity of those paying the bill, not the personal lifestyle choices of those employed as a result.

Kind of like how you'd feel bad if schools actually became stricter in their hiring policies. You mentioned this a few weeks ago. A lot of good people wouldn't have the qualifications or something and would be out of a job.
Too damn bad.

That's not surprising, ever read the comments that all the gaijin expats write on that site? I bet more then half of that 76% have never even set foot on okinawa.

Pretty much a regurgitation of news snippets. Even DOD people here make assumptions- like "they don't like us" which is a product of news. Those same people probably don't have any local friends.

you all know im not a big base supporter, but I dont think there talking about all the bases leaving, just a few. I would like to see a few less bases on island but not all gone. They do help the local economy, with on base jobs and the money bought into local shops. If you split the bases between okinawa and guam, you can still have your "Support for the east asain area"

Hmmm. Helping the local economy doesn't seem like a good reason for spending my tax dollars to keep the American bases here. (Well, actually there. I'm in Las Vegas until later this year.)
There is a very good reason for keeping SOME of the American forces here. We are a stabilizing force in the region. Japan's neighbors have long memories and are somewhat comforted by the American presence here. They would be very nervious and threatened if Japan had to rearm to take up the slack should America close the doors on the bases here.

hell I live in okinawa and pay japanese taxes which pay for the bases here. Im not even american. I would love not to have to pay for the bases, but if not the bases here in okinawa I would be paying for the few bases that are in the mainland.

Well, you are paying for fewer bases in mainland Japan these days. A large number of the bases on Honshu and Kyushu have been closed. I.E. Tachikawa AB (where I was stationed), Kanto Mura, Green Park, Yamato AS, Fuchu AS, Johnson AS, Itazuke AB, not to mention facilities from the other services. In the Tokyo area the only Air Force facility left is Yokota and it's a ghost town compared to the 60's. Air Bases, Naval bases, and logistics storage facilities (I.E. the Army facility at Kure) probably are needed but ground forces? They are here in case a conflict breaks out in Korea but they could be airlifted from the States. Most of the necessary transport would have to come from the States anyway. Yes, I know about the Essex at Sasebo but it can't move all the Marines from Okinawa as fast as they would be needed in Korea.

Yessir. Detering North Korea, training with militaries of Asian nations, detachments such as JSOTF-P doing their thing, to name a few reasons why we are here in Okinawa...
That, and as an active duty Marine here, I like serving overseas. Call me biased.
