I have a HDTV, yet I am not able to recieve the digital signal that is broadcast over-the-air in japan. I know it's because my tv was bought at the BX so it doesn't have a japanese tuner. Does anyone know if I could purchase a digital tuner for my tv off base? If so, where and how much?

Thanks for any help in advance.

First off, what is your brand? I would suggest contacted the mfg to ask them if they have a tuner for that model. I also suggest going to Yamada Denki and asking them. They are the reason that I didn't buy my TV on base...Once I found out that I would need a Japanese tuner and the base said that they could not order it for me.

Good Luck.

I have a panasonic. I knew about the tuner before I bought the tv but I might get sent back to the states in a year or two so I bought it anyways.

Yeah...it's a catch 22...I bought the Japanese model and will buy the US tuner when I need it.

The thing is that the Japanese are pushing for a HD singal, but they haven't yet. You should be able plug a coxal cable from your wall to the back of your TV. The only type of tuners that you are going to be able to get over here are the AFN and the SKYPerfect tuners. Sky offers a HD stanard on a couple of its channels, but that's about it.

The AFN should be free if you are SOFA, but the SKY is going to cost you... about Y19000. Somewhere around there. Then there's installation. Hit me up if you need help with that... it's what I do for a job over here.

I have the AFN dish but didn't set it up because they didn't give me anything to mount it with. Not to mention it wouldn't be in HD anyways.

Japan has OTHD (over the air HD). All you need is a japanese HDTV (or japanese HDTV tuner) and you get a digital signal. They just recently started doing this in the states as well.
