Finally after a lot of perserverence, a lot of skepticism I got
a job on base yesterday.
It was not the kind of job I was looking for, but I believe that
God has his own plans for us sometimes...

Whether it all works out or not, at least i proved that it is possible
to get a job, if you are not American, Japanese or Filipino.
Something i was beginning to doubt.

No,no,no.....of course I am not SOFA.

How could it be that hard to get a job on base if I am SOFA.
I specifically said I am not american, nor japanese, nor filipino
and I am civilian.
You can tell from the flag what country i am from:-|

I just wanted to say that after working I dont know how many years of my life in Japanese companies., I am very much enjoying working in an American enviroment.
I must say I never thought it would be through the US Military. BUt I will just that I am very happy to be here:)

Maybe start a thread later on the differences between Japanese and American companies and work attitudes. Not now...just too hot

I guess I'm just unlucky. I'm working on base and it's absolutely terrible. This is the only job I've ever had where I've been tempted to just walk out and not come back. I thought working off-base kind of sucked, but where I'm at now is so much worse. Already got a decent job lined up off base for when this contract is up in a few months.

Every job I ever had sucks until this one. But they all paid garbage on top of sucking. If they paid at least 50k or more than i'd stick around.

Right. I made decent money at my last job but the boss was an untrusting <insult>. If you can't trust your IT team, get rid of them and stop being a pain in the ******* ass.

And I made over 50k combined w/ JU. Money is way lower than happiness on my priority scale.

That's the only reason I'm sticking around until the end of the contract. Hopefully they don't fire me...they've already threatened it. Didn't even do anything wrong either. Some Marine falsely assumed something (didn't even talk to me) and went to my boss and shit just went downhill from there. Totally blindsided me and the more I try to defend myself, the worse it gets because it questions the integrity of that Marine. ******* politics.

The next job I'm taking will be a big pay cut at first, but it's at least something I love doing and in a VERY nice location.

I agree to an extent. Like I love my current job. But on the flip side it's hard to be happy and broke.

But I would sacrifice some money to have a job I love.

I was making almost $20k more at my last job, with good bosses, but the hours sucked and momma wasn't happy.

Thistle - Quick question
I'm really confused by the non-sofa job thing
What status do you have now?
Do you still have some kind of Japanese work permission? How does that work if you work on base?
Are you considered an MLC/IHA hire or some other acronym....you can tell im confused!

Richard Burns
07-31-2009, 05:25 PM
Non-SOFA base workers are either MLC, IHA, contractor w/o SOFA ie; Foster Consession Mall, or work for one of the three staffing agencies(Plenty staff, prostaff, and on time).

To get a base job like this you need to either be a Japanese citizen or have a valid visa.

spike7165
07-31-2009, 05:29 PM
ah i see I was thinking everyone was either mlc or iha,
so its possible to get hired direct as a contractor for example as you say in the foster concession mall then that individual business is reponsible for you and picks up the tab directly.
Presumably then you need either spouse or japanese working visa?
Do contractor jobs get any kind of benefits on base?

I got the job through On=Time staffing agency and i am a permanent resident.
But you could get a job through these agencies if you have a valid visa.

I don't know about getting hired direct as a contractor, but if you are a US citizen then it is probably possbible. If you are not a US citizen you will most likely have to take the staffing agency route and then you work yourself up to an IHA position.
What does MLC mean?

Richard Burns
07-31-2009, 10:14 PM
MLC = White collar jobs
IHA = Blue collar jobs

Yes, that's about it...

I think you could also go to the movie theatre and the pool without showing any military id. And the bowling alley and the library.
