For those U.S. citizens living in Japan who have to file with the IRS by June 15, what dollar-yen exchange rate did you use to calculate your earnings from your yen salary, and what source did you get it from? If possible could you provide a link to it?

I found this site (http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/data/EXJPUS.txt) and it had a rate for each month in 2006, so I just averaged them up and it came to ¥116.35 for 2006. Is that right? Is that the rate you guys used?

Let me know as soon as you can what you used. Really need to confirm I am using the right rate.

Thanks.

I think my city office just put the daily rate on it, the lower the better.

I don't pay US taxes. Only pay Japanese taxes. You only have to pay US taxes if you make more than $80,000 a year and that ain't me.

You still have to file though.

I think I used Turbo Tax online for free last year but it seems the "free" one is now $29.99. But they still say it's free :).

Can anyone recommend a good online tax service? I gotta do them by Sunday...

Grab a turbo tax torrent. They work fine.

Kadena Tax Center is easier if you have SOFA.
