Thanks Apple for making the camera on the new Iphone 3GS better. :cursing:

Pretty good shots from a cell phone. I am sure there are better ones out there but it's like night and day compared to the first Iphone 3G.

Can almost guarantee it will cost you big time, if anything like AU, then maybe 300-500 bucks to upgrade unless you've had the phone and/or their service for a good year or two.

If you are talking about upgrading your current iPhone 3G you have under contract with Softbank to a 3GS, then this blog post (http://blogd.com/wp/index.php/archives/6139) covers the details...

Thanks! This part I was unaware of as well.
Another tip: if you got your 3G in Japan before the price drops a few months ago, you should go to SoftBank and get your contract adjusted. When the subsidized price for the 8GB 3G fell to 0 yen (and the 16GB version’s price was cut in half), they also lowered the cost for the data plan, from ¥5,985 to ¥4,410 ($62 to $46), but don’t be fooled into thinking that the new price applies to you; if you signed up before that price was instituted, then you’re still paying it.

The part about upgrading:

If you have an iPhone 3G in Japan and are interested in upgrading to the 3G, then bad news: SoftBank is not offering you any special deals. If you have the 3G, then that means you still have at least one year left on your contract-with-subsidy, and you can receive subsidy for only one phone at a time. Getting the new iPhone now would mean paying full price, or about 65,000 yen. That would be spread over 24 months, and maybe (maybe, I’m not sure) a discount would apply in the last 12 of those months, reducing the cost some, but it would still be pretty expensive. So I’m waiting for the next model.

Softbank are a bunch of schisters! Been totally happy with my Docomo contract the past dozen years, and if anything, their service has gotten better and better as the competition has come on.

Yeah this part is BS

Another tip: if you got your 3G in Japan before the price drops a few months ago, you should go to SoftBank and get your contract adjusted. When the subsidized price for the 8GB 3G fell to 0 yen (and the 16GB version’s price was cut in half), they also lowered the cost for the data plan, from ¥5,985 to ¥4,410 ($62 to $46), but don’t be fooled into thinking that the new price applies to you; if you signed up before that price was instituted, then you’re still paying it. You have to go to SoftBank and apply for the new price plan. And while they’re at it, they demand that your contract be extended to two years after the change. If you’re intending to get the next iPhone after your first two years are up anyway, then there’s no problem with that, and it won’t affect your ability to get the next iPhone’s subsidy–the contract extension and the subsidy discount are not linked. Or so they told me, and I was pretty specific in the questioning.

I bought my iphone last year. Since they couldn't verify my credit or I was a new customer or whatever BS they gave me at the time I didn't qualify for the Superbonus.

I had 2 choices.

Pay 80,000 yen upfront and sign up for the superbonus with a 25 month contract and they would pay me back with the superbonus every month.

or

Pay 44,000 yen straight out and I would not have to sign up for a contract and I wasn't eligible for the superbonus.

Since I didn't feel like giving Softbank an 80,000 yen interest free loan over 2 years I paid the 44,000 non subsidized, no contract price. Or so I was led to believe.

Side note:
When they came out with the Iphone for everybody campaign in May with the reduced the data plan from 5,985 to 4,410 to I thought I would sign up for a contract, but I decided to wait because I knew a new Iphone would be coming out soon.

Yesterday, I decide to call my local softbank store to see if they have any in stock. I got negative response but they said we can reserve one for you and should be getting some stock on the 1st of July or the middle of July. Didn't quite understand this since the next day was the first. Anyways she said to come to the store to reserve it.

After reading similar stuff to what commando posted, I was pretty convinced to take my happy ass to the store thinking I will able to get the 3GS at a new contract price, since (A) I didn't get a subsidized phone to begin with and (B) I don't have a contract with them.

WRONG

Either this girl didn't understand English well enough or I am confused.

She said I have to pay the upgrade price since I have had my phone over six months but less than a year. Which means 3000+ yen a month or basically more than 60,000 over 2 years just for the phone.

I tried to explain to her that I don't have a contract and I never got the superbonus or a subsidized price the first time. She told that I have the white plan so that means I have a contract. I don't think softbank understands the concept of a contract or they have their own in the fine print, of course.

Oh and as a bonus you have to sign up for the "double" white plan to be eligible not the single white. So add another 1000 yen a month.

FACk softbank! They can suck my left nut .

Oh and if anyone is wondering I did not lose my composure or anything.

Yes, and yes.:old:

I've yet to meet shop staff with fluent enough English to explain the various plans, rules, and penalties in coherent fashion. It's bloody confusing enough in Japanese, and many native Japanese speakers need to go through the paperwork and sales speil slowly, and ask for tons of clarification.

Result - she didn't explain all you needed to know, or didn't do it well enough for a native English speaker to completely understand. It's as clear as mud for you.:-|

Well I was only trying to be nice with that part. :)

She checked my account info and pointed to what I had to pay on the chart. Doesn't get any simpler than that.

On top of that those of us married to locals or who have been here a while know that the simplest of questions at almost any business in Japan takes a minimum of 5 minutes to answer (maybe a slight exageration). I'd bet when locals go to get a new phone it's commonly an all day event, maybe even 2 days. It blows my mind.

Because Apples plan was to market it out as a new feature every year or two without having to revamp the internal circuitry, creating a loss on the first seriies, but recoupperating, via software modulations in the future.

(Come on, Ask me how I know).

Intenally the motherboard of the first iphone, was created to last for the first 5 generations of i-phone.

There was an app I looked at months back that allowed the iPhone to make video via the built-in camera. It used the camera to take rapid photos at 15fps and string them into video. It wasn't too bad, as long as the phone was relatively stable, and the subject of the video wasn't moving too quickly.

Think it was called drunknbass.

If you jailbreak or unlock the operating system (http://gizmodo.com/5302123/jailbreak-and-unlock-iphone-30/gallery/) you can record video. http://cydia.saurik.com/info/cycorder/

Of course use at your own risk and technically it's illegal.;)

I always wonder how "jailbreaking" your iPhone can be illegal when it your phone, you property so how can such a law exist.
