As for the Zune HD, Microsoft is doubling down on its bet on a radio tuner as a distinguishing feature. Stephenson noted that the current Zune's FM radio is its second most popular selling point. Adding support for HD Radio, a free over-the-air digital radio technology, represents both a risk and opportunity.

"It's really one of the first portable HD radio receivers out there," Stephenson said. "It's going to be important for us to communicate the value of HD Radio since it is a fairly nascent technology."

One of the big unanswered questions is what sort of gaming abilities the Zune HD will have. There has been speculation on the topic, but Microsoft refused to comment ahead of E3 saying it had no details to share at this time.

Microsoft plans to continue selling its hard drive-based model, which will have a software QWERTY keyboard, but said it plans to eventually discontinue its other flash models in favor of the Zune HD.

"Expect to see the Zune HD...become the definitive Zune product going forward," Stephenson said. "You will continue to see the hard drive product in the market. (The Zune HD) will take over from existing flash devices."

Microsoft, always a day late and a dollar short. Touchscreen, heh, heh, LMAO.

I have to admit that it looks pretty nice.

Looks pretty hot. I'm running an 80G right now, but I may have to upgrade. Not too son though, as I like my current one, and it will certainly be a hiwle befre Msoft fields enough decent accessories for the new player.

still my biggest gripe is that, IMHO microsoft toally missed their oppurtunity, because they got greedy. They could have totally destryoed the Ipod cartel in about 4 months if they wanted to.

In terms of software, hardware, slick looks, and interface, Zune goes toe to toe with Ipod beautifully But, they wanted to straight up copy the Ipod business model with that restricted zunemarketplace shit.

They didn't seem to realize that Ipod, being a household name, is where people go to buy an MP3 player first. Almost the only of people that didn't want to buy Ipod (at least when zune was first coming out) were people that specifically wanted to avoid using Itunes. Why The hell then, did msoft go with an ITunes copycat platform?

If they hade released Zune as slick as it is, but made it open software/ playsforsure compatible, people would have been off the ipod bandwagon within months.

Shit, with the right marketing, and a few special offers, people still would have probably ended signing up for the marketlace voluntarily.

Dumb ass Msoft.
