Pretty much if you are anything but American you can find a job without too much trouble.

Heh. It sure seems that way, huh? Getting a job on base also seems to be nearly hopeless if you're smart or have a college degree. A lot of available jobs here are entry level with no or little room for advancement. The other jobs require certification and decades of job experience. If you have a knack in something like computers, like dk, you have more opportunities in some things. If you have a teaching credential, you're golden.
I don't think we mean to be so negative about jobs on island, but they're hard to come by on base. Jobs off base usually require you to be fluent in Japanese, except for teaching English. Some people, mostly Americans, have requirements of a job, but some others, mostly Filipinas, will do anything a job requires. Do you see the difference? heh.
Personally, I have a difficult time finding a job here, because I have a college degree in a specific major. Admittedly, I have requirements of a job, instead of being willing to do what a job requires. If things were to get desperate for us, then my priorities would change. The job you're willing to apply for and take depends on your priorities as well. Good luck in any case!
Actually, it's not very easy for me either. This JU job doesn't pay all that great, but it's automated to the point where I can work a second job--which also pays crap compared to what I'd make stateside. On Okinawa, I work for two companies to make the kind of money I was offered for entry level programming in the states.
And as an IT worker with no real want of a base-job, I'm severely limited when it comes to working out in town. Let me see... I can work for an ISP... or I can work for an ISP... hmm...
The easy money for a person like me is working on my own, which I will most likely do if/when I get sick of the ISP job. I'll probably be working for JU for a long time.

I'm vietnamese-american, I have a BA in Business Admin with a focus on Management and Marketing. I really only looking for a job to fill my time. Everyone keeps recommending that I look into teaching English, are there any requirement for that?
thanks for the advices
Pretty much the only requirements for teaching in the public schooling system is a bachelor's degree. In the private sector, there's probably no requirements aside from a will to teach (or just a will to have a job).

Well, if you don't mind some hard work and long hours, the place that I work at might hire you. They don't pay great, but better than most other retailers on base. I also have one of those sheepskins, but it's more specialised than yours. I cam PM you the company's name if you're interested.
Here are a few more places that haven't been mentioned, as far as I noticed:

Ever thought about eBay? There are people out there looking for all things Okinawan. If there is an interest there, go to www.eBay.com, type in Okinawa and see what others are selling and what they are getting for those items. I don't know if they have flea markets on Okinawa, but that could be a source for cheap vintage merchandise. You could be your own boss, set your own hours, and you wouldn't have to be couped up in an office all day. Just a thought.
Regards
Ox

Dude, Ox, that's a great idea. My husband does ebay all the time. I'm surprised he never thought of that as something I could do when the parasite is born.
