I like the relaxing beach scenery. The foods of many different cultures available here. The unselfish kind people. The way everything is potrayed in a "cute" way. Cant forget the great Orion beer! As well as the beautiful japanese women in some places around okinawa :thumbup1:

I like that Okinawa has fewer things that can kill you than most other places. :D The food and weather here are also good things. Oh and my mom still lives here, which can go in either the good or the bad category depending on the randomness that is my mother. heh.

so far, I like:
-the amazing scenery.
-how up north it seems to be a different country.
-the children in my neighborhood because they are so open and talkative.
-how there are so many places to SHOP!
-the river next to my house.
-the tombs everywhere.
-how I can leave my bicycle outside for two days and no one will steal it!
-how my tire went flat and 4 really, really old okinawan men fixed it for me in like 2 minutes--without me even asking for help!
-that I can dress up and not feel like an outsider out in town.
-exercising is not weird and people don't stare at me from their car or honk when I am trying to go for a run.
-I can walk to the grocery store at midnight if I want, and NOTHING will happen to me even If I wanted to wear my wallet as a hat :P
There is so many more, I just cannot think of the reasons right now. ha.
Things I do NOT like about Okinawa:
--no street signs
--old racist men
--apparent lack of some people's oral hygiene
--habu snakes!
--plastic bottles littered EVERYWHERE
--the GIANT pachinko parlors on every corner
--those teenagers who revv their motorcycles or scooters all hours of the night
but nothing is perfect. ha
I'll take it for what it is!

People, they are wonderful. Absolutely kind. But lets not forget the double standard. Americans seatbelt seatbelt, Okinawans, let your kids ride they are human catapults. I know it's a select few in Oki, but, it pisses me off there is such a double standard. I do love Okinawa and Okinawa people, but, I hate the double standard. My opinion and it is just that

It Okinawa is the only place you ever encountered double standards I would be willing to say that you have not been around the world too much YET.
Double standards exist everywhere you go in this world. Here in Okinawa off base there are double standards and on base they exist just as well.
Using your examples though...who created the double standard?
The rules on base which are a tiny portion of the entire country of Japan were created for the most part by American's. I would suggest to you that in your examples here you are criticizing the wrong people.

I've been there twice. Once for a year in 72-73 and then again 25 years later leaving my wife in Japan with our Japanese friends while I took a 5 day jaunt. I stayed in Naha and ventured out each day by 7am and returned no earlier than 10 pm. I appreciate the culture, walking down kokusai street after dark and the trip I took up north (Hedo Point) The food is great and who can forget the best Sake can be found on Okinawa.
Dislikes.... none other than driving on the wrong side of the road with a car that has the steering wheel on the wrong side....but hey, it was fun too. Would go back in a heartbeat!

Not freezing exactly, but I've got to say that the weather is not what it used to be. Sometimes I go out for a smoke in the morning, and it feels like it's freezing.
When I did that a few years ago (going out for a smoke) around this time of year, I was sweating my ass off. Something is wrong with the environment.
Personally, I blame Al Gore.:army:

Oh, ok so you mean the fact that there are a lot of International people here.
Just checking...thought for a min you were saying Okinawa is an Internationalized place which it isn't. But people will disagree on that.
If you lived in the South or some parts of Naha I think it is no different than living in the rural country of Iwate, with regards to Internationalization.

Up until last night, I would have said the same thing until 2 20 year old guys came into the bar I was in and put on a show I couldn't believe. They weren't even drunk, just super rude. Yelling at the bartender to get them drinks, and acting the fool. I couldn't understand everything they were saying, but after the left, the bartender told me some of the comments and they definately were a**holes.. I told her she should have just asked them to leave, but whatever, there were only 5 of us in there anyway.
I didn't hold their behavior against Okinawans in gerneral as I try not to generalize, but they were smoking swisher sweets, and there is no doubt about it, generalizations aside, anybody who smokes Swisher sweets is a tool.

I've spent so much time outside of the "United States", and having experienced so many positive things, that when I finally returned home, it made me want to come back to Okinawa.
Having a local family has a lot to do with it, as does the fact that people do not seem to want a relationship with other people.
It's all about how many fancy gadgets do I have, as compared to my neighbor. Or how many "Illegal Citizens" I can sneak across our border.
Or how about the guy with the ladder, hoping to hook up with my cable conduit?
Screw all of that.
Now we have to live with neighbors offering food, needing advice with their English, or reports about strange cars parking in my parking space. Kids come knocking at the door for candy. Keep a mini bowl for just that purpose, and never give out candy unless their parents come along. But then, the father wants a beer.
Life is good.:grin1:

The lifestyle is cool, I used to live with a young lady who worked with the Police, loved her a lot.

Heh, just saw this.
When I talk about running into old girlfriends, or keeping in "contact" with them, it's more about running into them while shopping/dining. There is no physical contact involved (maybe a hug), but other than that, nothing.
So don't try to turn this into anything nefarious.:old:
