View Full Version : What are you paying your ISP?

Pretty simple. What are you paying your ISP, what service do you have, and who do you use?

I think this thread would serve nicely for people moving here, or at least provide people who live here a chance to compare different services and costs.

I use tontonme and have ADSL service...I only pay Y860/month, but I only pay every 6 months by automatic draft, so I guess I pay Y5,160 every 6 months.

It serves it's purpose for me, but I am considering changing to something faster.

What about you?

I download at roughly 12,000 kb/s and upload around 1400kb/s

Used to have NTT when we were on base at Foster. This was when it was still Konnect only. Loved the service so much. No dropping or losing of service for long periods of time for no reason. Had great customer service as well even with the language barrier. When Mediatti came along we kept NTT. Had to get stupid Mediatti once we moved to Lester.....sigh :(

I don't think I've ever heard a single good thing about mediatti...

OCN is buying out my company and they are courting me pretty hard. I guess a lot of people have switched to YahooBB!

I'm still on the fence on whether to fork out the extra yen for the fiber.

I have the same but it's 8,000. I think thats because my phone is included with it.

I had ADSL before, it was 2,000.

You probably know this but just to pass along to those that are not aware of it, there are two OCN's here in Okinawa. One is the Open Cable Network that is owned by NTT and the Okinawa Cable Network which also has cable TV services.

I would never go with YahooBB for one huge reason. A few years back some emloyee's of Yahoo got themselves arrested for selling customer lists to loan sharks here in Japan. A friend of mine's name was included and he got phone calls left and right for about 6 months from all sorts of telemarketing types that he even went to the trouble of getting his home phone number changed. Which to those that know here is really a hassle.

Plus Yahoo while probably having the highest name recognition in Japan as a service provider has one of the worst track records when it comes to customer service.

It's your choice but for me at least I have had zero problems with NTT and their service for me has been nothing short of outstanding. I have been on the 'net here pretty much since it's inception, going from ATT World Net and dial up 56k service, through KDDI Dion, Flets ADSL and now Fiber. I'll take the fiber anyday.

Pretty much all ISP's eventually run through NTT's system correct? I mean there are only so many ways to get communications off this island right?

Yes that's right, well except for KDDI they have their own undersea cables, however their server is either in Tokyo or Osaka. The server for NTT Fiber is here in Okinawa, where as the ADSL server is in Fukuoka.

Just about every other provider leases their lines through NTT that I know of that is.

I never was clear on what we have, but there are two little boxes with lights next to the computer that have NTT stamped on them. We pay about 5000 yen/month.

Highest connection speed, 4300 yen. Not as good as fiber, may upgrade later on. Only for internet connection, no other services.

I have OCN from the Okinawa cable TV company. It's around 6000 yen a month including IP phone and it is supposed to be 30 MB/ s (30,000 kb/s).

I haven't tested the speed lately. Anybody know some good sites to test it with from Okinawa? I have tried several in the past but the speed varied so much. I think the best download speed I had was around 11 MB/s.

I don't think anybody gets 30 MB/s.

I was thinking of getting fiber but I guess it won't make too much of a difference.

My friend just left Okinawa and moved to Las Vegas. He said he misses Okinawa just for the internet access. He can't get fiber in Vegas and the company he is with limits him to 5 gig of download a month.

Thank you Uchinamuku. Once I saw that site it all came back to me where I saw it before, right here on this forum.

It looks like I am at 8300 kb/s download and 1900 kb/s upload. Tried to get the url to post but too lazy/tired at the moment. Everybody will have to make my word until I figure it out.

Wow, I am truly amazed that your upload speed is faster than your download.

I have hikari as well and I am no where even close to that speed for uploads.

Mediatti sucks, and I think you might be able to get some ADSL on base, but I'm not sure. Your best bet would be to live off base, and get fiber internet.

I think some of our members that reside on base have ADSL from Konnect (I think that's their name). It's better then mediatti but still not all that great.

Off-base, you can get up to 100 mbps ethernet on router or 54 mbps secured wireless. On base, much fewer options.

Here's a menu of possibilities with NTT /OCN in Okinawa, Japan (NTT-West region).

(Hikari=fiber optic, if you're familiar with T1/DS1 connections, you'll be pleasantly surprised)

NTT-OCN Hikari "B FLET'S" / "FLET'S·Hikari Premium" (FTTH)

I have heard that Mediatti has been upgrading there internet infastructure lately and should be done by the 20th of November. I don't know how much faster it will get. Maybe somebody was pulling my leg but does anybody have mediatti and notice any difference.

For those of you using Hikari Fiber...how does the phone part of that work? Does the pc have to be on for the phone to work, or does the phone just share the fiber line? I think I'm gonna pull the string on this and switch to fiber since the phone is included. I would have faster internet service, and my total bill would only be Y1,000 more.

TheNoNamedOne
11-18-2007, 01:31 AM
No, the computer does not need to be on to use the phone. They share the same fiber line.

DoctorP

Just wanted to make sure. I pay Y1,000/month for my ISP and about Y6,000/month for phone. I only have 10Mbs service though. Sounds like I should make the change while the construction charge is still free.

TheNoNamedOne
11-18-2007, 01:46 AM
I think it is always free, and will be always free.

We got ours about a year ago and when they pitched it to us a big part of the deal was, "get it while the construction is free." I think that is their perpetual enticement to get people on-board.

Not sure how strict the Jpn gov is with Truth in Advertising.

This may be true, but I know that OCN, and NTT have both advertised "specials" then they stop them for a while. NTT charged something like Y18,000 for a while when people began getting ADSL installation. Not sure if they still do or not.

It's insanely fast. I can download a TV show in about 15 mins.

docP,

The phone out telephone jack on the "Hikari" modem /router can connect to a fax, phone and IP phone. You may need a splitter.

The ethernet port can be attached to a wireless router.

All above run without a computer once programmed with access codes. Everything is run on the modem /router, including a firewall.

Thanks to you (and everyone else) for your replies. I'm pretty sure I'll make the switch, it is actually about Y1,000 cheaper to go with Hikari then what I have right now.

You got to go with Sunny-net... they will give you the most options for you money, better tech support (English too), and they also have the wireless deal... I mean it's faster than ADSL, but cheaper than Fiber... Can't really bet that, plus you don't have the long ass wait like you do for Fiber now a days

DoctorP
