I have been looking for this movie in English since I saw the poster for it when I went to see King Kong in Naha! I'm so excited that someone knows what I'm talking about. My husband couldn't find it, but I'll let him know the title now. Thanks for bringing it up.

I thought the movie was Otoko Tachi No Yamato
Yamamoto Isoroku was the famous Admiral who planned the attack on Pearl Harbor. Yamato was the famous battleship that was sunk during Operation Ten-Go following the invasion of Okinawa.
Interesting fact
The Yamato class battleships (大和型戦艦, Yamatogatasenka?) of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) were the largest naval vessels of World War II and were the largest, heaviest battleships ever constructed to this day, displacing 72,800 metric tons (at full load) and armed with nine 46 cm (18.1 inch) main guns.
I too am trying to hunt down a version of this movie with english subs.

I thought it was the battleship Yamato also, like the anime spaceship. Please clarify, because I'm sending my husband to go find it. Thanks! :D

Saw it! Loved it! We cried at various parts. I cried more than him. That one scene where the brother says goodbye to his older brother... wow. That about tears your heart out. It's definitely on my favorite movies list.

The action scenes were outstanding, and I really got sense that not all military commanders were all about the sucide sorties

I liked the action scenes. The last big action scene on the Yamato has a lot of blood and flying body parts, but isn't gory. It's gruesome, but acceptable. I liked it mostly for the character stories. Admittedly, there were some characters that I couldn't distinguish from another. It's that whole all Asians look alike thing. Heh. I felt the camaraderie between the men was really strong, regardless of rank. I also notice just how much it took to sink the Yamato. (Yes, it's giving away the ending, but since it's a historical fact, I went ahead.) We beat punched enough holes in it to sink a small island.
