Ok, so I went to this karaoke bar/dinner thing out in Chatan somewhere. I got Vietnam Raw Spring Rolls which were awesome! But anyway, the sauce they were in was damn good and I want to buy some. I was told it was sweet chili sauce and went to a few grocerie type stores out in town...had no idea what I was looking at (no surprise since I cant read konji(spelling??)). Does anyone know first, what I am talking about, and second, where I can get some?
Thanks

I know what your talking about. They should have the sauce at the commissary. If not...at the asian stores you'll find it. There's different kinds so you'll just have to try them out, but I believe they sell on base too. I bought some, but haven't tried it yet...it tastes about almost the same or taste as the restaurants.

In Foster, Kadena, and Courtney (not sure about Kinser) there is a section set aside for asian cuisine, sauces and whatnot.

Yeah I know what you mean. It's hard for me to find stuff here that I want and need to make my asian meals. But yes...check it out and see if you find it. If not, let me know and I can get some for you and send it to you or what not. :)

If it is a special sauce that the restaurant makes, they may sell some to you. I have really liked some of the Japanese dressings in some of the places off base. They are their own house dressings. I have asked and bought some for my own use at home.
Can you describe in a little more detail what it looked like? Was it all ketchup with seasoning or was it more along the lines of a clear reddish colored sauce with red pepper seeds in it?
I might know what you are looking for and could give you some suggestions of what or where to buy it.

It was the second kind, kinda clear/reddish and it did have little seeds in it. Im heading to Kadena today will see if they have it there.

Ok, the computer I am on now will not allow me to view any images but when I get home I will show you a bottle of what you may have had.
In reading your reply I would bet that the sauce that you had was a Thai Chili sauce that is readily available at any San Ei or JUSCO. It is usually sold in a bit of an elogated bottle with a white label and Thai lettering. There is a sticker afixed to it written in Japanese. The San Ei's that I buy it from have it in two sizes.
It has a bit of a sweet peppery flavor and is "sticky" in texture if my guess is correct.

The stuff you are looking for is manufactured by Mae Ploy and on the Asian Isle at the commissary. Unless you read Thai, the only words you can read will be Mae Ploy.

This is the one that the commisary sells I think. However the one from SanEi has a white label but the contents are readily visible as it is in a clear bottle.

The one out in town is written in Thai, but the sauce is clearly visible, just look in the aisle that has the Kimichee sauce in it. It should be around there, or just stop one of the girls that work there and ask them for "Chili sa-su arimasuka"? Do you have ChiliSauce or "Chili sa-su wa doko ni arimasuka?" Where is the chili sauce?

There is a place in Gushikawa where my wife buys hers. She and her friends swear by it...if you are up for making the drive I can get you directions.
I know of a place in Naha called Kimchee Land, the stuff there isnt cheap but it is good. It's almost right behind the AW on Hwy 330 near the Omoromachi Station.

A lot of 100 yen shops sell sweet chili sauce. The one at Mihama Makeman, for example. Plenty in Naha do too. Not sure if it's as good as the brand-name stuff, but not too bad, really.

Be careful buying food items at the Y100 stores. Be sure to check expiration dates carefully.
