Before the contestants appear coming down the red carpet for their accomplishments, here are my nomimations for the title Ugliest Street in Okinawa:
Route 330, from Ganeko in Ginowan to Futenma Shrine
This street has no trees on the side and is virtually lined with used car shops. The overhead tangle of wiring makes you feel like you are under some weird spider's nest. Just aweful. Even the bozuzoku don't ride much on this ugly street.
Route 58 from Kadena to Naha
What can you say? Just atrocious. Perhaps if they changed those ailing palm trees that are not indigenous to Okinawa and hence quite unhealthy looking (reminds me of that sickly tree in Charlie Brown's Christmas Special) to an indigenous banyan tree like the Gajumaru tree, it could improve a lot. Oh, and as dk said once before, just bulldoze down all those old delapidated store buildings in Ginowan Oyama, along with those churches there as well. All run down buildings. And Rout58 needs a moratorium on Pachinko Parlors.
Coastal Road from Nago to Motobu
Oh, just got to role your windows up and not breath any of the dust from the mountains they have been hacking down for the last 40 years to make mortar, sand, and gravel for concrete. If you look out your left window to the ocean it is not so bad, but if you happen to look out the right window you will not see any green vegetation. Oh, the vegetation is there all right, it is just that it is covered in a white powdered dust from all the sand and rock mining. A real lung health hazzard in the countryside!
Well, those are my three nominations for the Okinawa's Ugliest Street Award. Do you have any others, or would you like to support those candidates?
Hahahahaha. Man, great topic. I'm half tempted to run a front page story about this on our website. :D :D
I'll comment more later. Going to try to get out of my office soon.

Hey, this is great stuff man. Brings back memories. Unfortunately, being away for almost eight years, any ugly streets I may think about nominating may have been beautified by now. But the curving road on Chatan Cho where I used to live drove me nuts. It reminded me of driving through a friggin' maze. The scenery wasn't all that great either with all those old houses/apartments and no place to park.
Park Street (aka BC street) was looking a little crappy when I left to. Seemed like it was almost reverting back to those old 1982-1983 days when I was a young airman.

Yeah, Park Avenue is on its way to becoming a contender. All those metallic white dome coverings they lined the street with are really starting to rust out. Shouldn't be long.

Well, you've covered quite a lot of Okinawa there, I drive on R58 every day from Ginowan to
Kadena, and I guess the rundown antique shops area there is the worst, but I live there so I guess I have just grown used to it.
For me the worst area is the Lions Mansion town area near the Convention centre, mainly because I think they are ugly, I would rather live in a run down housing estate/slum than there.
Those buildings have taken over the Island, and am sure one day it will simply be called
OKINAWA - Home of the Lions Mansion.
Sorry- just every time I see another one being built, just makes me blood boil!
What Okinawa needs is more houses, not apartments everywhere, it is virtually impossible to find a small house to rent, one way of stopping people from owning pets I suppose.
Perhaps this subject should have been in the rant section.

How about Hwy 329 from 330 all the way down into Naha. There is absolutely nothing worth looking at along that road!

My vote goes for 330 from Ganeko to Futenma Shrine.
I live nearby and try to avoid that stretch at all costs. I would much rather take a leisurely cruise up Highway 29 when I need to get to the Kitanaka-Chatan-Okinawa City area.
Peace,

From Ojana on 58 up that big hill (34, I think) to Ganeko intersection is one big ugly mess as well.

Ok, I will also vote for the 330 from Ganeko to Futenma shrine area.
It is ugly, and really horrible to drive along, of course, if they would hurry up
and get rid of Futenma base they would be able to make new roads, and we
wouldn't have to make a long detour just to get to the City office, and the road
from Ojana up to Ganeko would not always be congested.

Huh? That place still exists? I thought that the .... uh .... "employees" in that place were well past retirment age and should have been satisfied to collect social security.

Recruitment for the oldest profession in the world never stops.
Worn out barracks girls who passed from boy friend to boy friend not thinking the party would ever end, finally too old to be seriously thought of as marriage material by 20 year olds, wakes up one day knowing she is down and out, finds herself without a job, does the "snack" route for a few years, maybe a little prostituting to Japanese on Shakaidori streets, and then is spit out into whisper alley to grow old servicing the young Johny Applepie servicemen.
And all the sweethearts in the U.S. waiting for their boyfriend to come home, and the mothers of Johny, all declare Johny would never go to a "service girl". Not their boy.
Well, actually with Japanese women much loser than they were 20 years ago, many more Johnys have chances for their urges within the normal populace of Japanese women willing and wantng to experience Johny.
But, Whisper Alley still gets fed some of the girls spit out by society. But, since it is an alley, I am not sure it qualifies as a street for consideration in the awards ceremoney.

What makes you think it will be better?
Look at what a wonderful job they did in Chatan when Jusco and American Village were built!
Imagine how much worse things may be when Awase Meadows is replaced with a new shopping mall! Traffic over there is already terrible and there isn't really any room to widen the road there.
Everywhere I look, I am less than pleased with the job of community/city planners here.

Many streets in Okinawa aren't much more than an alley! But I think that you are right, maybe Whisper Alley should be disqualified!

Exactly Dr.P! The whole city planning here is just atrocious.
The cities need some large natural areas in the center of them -- like Central Part in the center of Manhatten. Naha had a great opportunity to do that with Ameku/Shintoshin area, but what did they do? They zoned it in a way that has created just an ugly mesh of concrete. But hey, they got a nice ToysRUs and Jusco there!
They could easily turn Awase Golf course into a nice Manhatten style Central Part because the landscaping is just about done. Just need to plant more trees in the greens.
Futenma, too, could be a crown jewel of green amongst the cities. But, I am not holding my breath. Okinawans do not value nature amongst them. Nature is something to drive an hour or two north to go and see.

My street is pretty ugly. If it weren't for my tiki torches and fire head god dude lighting the street sometimes, it would be ugly AND dark. You would fall into the potholes and never be seen again.
Pretty much any street in Ginowan gets my vote. Especially that area behind San-A close to the ocean. The amount of trash is ridiculous! There's been old TVs sitting behind my company back there for nearly a year. There were two boxes of old trash on the sidewalk near the love hotel sitting there for about 7 months! And if you really want to be disgusted, go walk around that port for a little bit. The only place I've ever seen more trash is a land fill.

449 in Nago to Motobu.
The "coastal" road. This was already mentioned but I had to get my opinion in. Yes, beautiful to look at on the ocean side, not so good on the dusty, dirty side. Also, lots of land reclamation as you get closer to Sesoko. Strangely enough I don't hear or read about any of the locals complaining that habitats will be ruined, reefs will be destroyed, or heads will be shaking while raising eyebrows and expressing extreme regret that the ocean is being destroyed. Oh, Sorry. I probably should have put that somewhere else.

I will also vote for Route 330, from Ganeko in Ginowan to Futenma Shrine. But is is pretty hard now days to find a nice road on okinawa to tell the truth.
My second would be the north sunabe sea wall miyagi road with all the apts. and satellite dishes hanging off the balconies.

True that... Seriously. I'm so happy with the view now... I can't imagine what would happen if the bases was given back. Seriously, how many local beaches are even close to as nice as Torii Beach within this area...

Do they have a sand raking position open?
On or off base? Off base, it's more important that you be able to dump concrete and destroy sea turtle nesting locations...
Oops, answered my own question. There's no SAND off-base...

Screw it then.....I'm just gonna buy a bunch of sand and dump it in the yard. I'll rake it every day and sit in it while drinking boat drinks.

Dude...Here's a pic of the crater in my street... What more proof do you need?... Every time I walk to the corner, I take my life in my hands. There's no lifeguard that watches out for me falling into a pothole and drowning, or being devoured by the infamous "Pot-hole Dwelling Asphalt Sharks". These are real and valid risks associated with living on Okinawa. Hell, just last year alone, there were 52.5 Asphalt shark attacks. The depth of some of these pot-holes tends to breed mutant species of land-sharks. All I'm saying is be safe..have a plan ....or a street buddy.

Allthough it has nothing to do with the thread.(okinawas ugliest street) Im going to have to dissagree. There are many nice beaches on okinawa and most all better than tori. Granted i have not been on tori in 8 or so years but just building a bunch of structers on the beach does not make it nice. Its about the sand, water and surf. Sure tori may have good sand but you need to go out 200 yards to get in the water at times. Tori beach? please.
Oh and last but not least a good beach needs a bunch of hotties to play with.
peace
