PCSing to Kadena

I just recieved orders to Kadena.
Need help with housing... Is it better to move off-base or on-base?

Are there any good websites to see whats availble for rent off-base?

Is there any other good information i should know before i go out there?

What do i take and not take?

Pets?

pretty new myself to the forums and am not on island yet, just in the research ... when you get here, go to the housing office and ask them to give your name to the housing agencies. they will call you and show you houses and apartments. not only that, but they'll drive you to and from the places.

It's been a few years since I was there but the off base housing is SO much fun. It's not as nice as the on base stuff, but at the end of the day you get to "leave" work if you know what I mean. Then when a typhon hits and the base goes into lockdown (hours before the storm arrives) you can go down to the local (Japanese) mall (Hyper Mart) and shop / hang out/ whatever. You're only going to be there for a few years so get the most from the experience.

Tip. Bring more warm clothing than you'd imagine for an island in the South Pacific. It does get cold in the winter time.

80% of the on base housing is crap. Take your time looking and move off base.

Just so no one new here gets confused, Okinawa is not in the South Pacific. It's in the subtropics zone, lying a bit north of the Tropic of Cancer. About the same latitude as Sarasota Florida I think.
