During your time on Okinawa, what particular song(s), when you hear it now brings out if even for a second or two those feelings of Okinawa. I'm meaning for that split second, you can see, smell, hear and feel as if you were still there. I have posted that I have missed out on a lot when I was in Okinawa and could sum my two years there up in a matter of two minutes and I probably still could. No fault but own and as a result, I can blame no-one but myself. However, I have at times, while listening to a song these days that was playing back in my days on Okinawa have thrusted me back into my time on Okinawa. Example: Starland Vocal Band - Afternoon Delight was on the radio and I went back to where I was leaving the first apartment my wife and were living at in Awase. It was sunny, mid-day, hot and can remember having to squint my eyes looking back at my wife because the sun was bright and she was standing at the door waving to me as I was waving to her. Oh :grin1: There truely is no correlation with this song and it being mid-day other than the fact that I was working the evening shift and time for me to go. Plus, it was one of my wife's favorite songs. :smile4: Another time happened about a week ago, for some reason Gary Wright - Dream Weaver started playing and shot me back to looking over the sea wall getting ready to climb over it. Of course it was windy though it wasn't very hot that time as it was cloudy, it was evening but the sun hadn't gone down yet and I remember turning back looking at my wife and car. The flashes don't last but about a nanosecond and when I try to relive it, I remember part of it but without any senses (feel, smell and touch).
Anyone else get these type of flash backs?
Take care,
Jim

Yeah, The Black Crowes' Shake Your Money Maker album does that for me.
In the early '90s, I used to tend bar Friday & Saturday nights at a place on gate 2 street. Shit, I can't even remember the name. It was run by two ex-Navy guys IIRC. They had a very nice sound system and a huge CD collection. That album was one of our favorites to throw on in the "wee hours" of the morning (2-5 am). Wow, I had some good times there. I drank for free, pocketed some cash, became friends with many cool regulars, and pulled some tail. :thumbup1:
Anyone remember the name of this place??? I know I'm not giving much of a description... Walking out of KAB gate 2, it was about half-way up the street on the right hand side, 2nd floor. They had an american staff, great beer prices, good rock music, and periodically had a live band.

I lived for summers on Okinawa, spending time with my friends, making new ones and just being a teenager. :D
OUtkast - Ms. Jackson reminds me of the barracks on Futenma cause my friend would walk the halls singing it for days after it came out.
With Arms Wide Open reminds me of AFN:barf: and how they'd play it 20 times a day while we cruised all over Okinawa. We replaced arms wide open with yakisoba and were usually on our to or from getting some while singing "WITH YAKI SOBA, under the moonlight".
But what will always put me in a real Okinawan mood, especially if I'm in the states when I hear it is Shima Uta by Miyazawa.

So, I didn't know you could do this and figured out how to post a link. I will post some more later but, these were songs big at my time in Okinawa and brings back memories when I hear them. I still listen to these songs anytime I get in the mood to want to think about my younger years and my days in Okinawa. SOS by ABBA is one of my favorite songs by them. As for Jefferson Starship - Red Octopus, - Fast Buck Freddie & Miracles, was one of the few albums I had when I got to Okinawa and those songs are what I listened to the most. Of course we can't forget Peter Frampton - Frampton Comes Alive!
Didn't party much but when I did, that one was sure to play!

Hi LastDon,
I was on Okinawa from 1975 to 1977. I lived in Awase for a few months and then moved to Futema for the rest of my time. Don't know if that helps any for you :) Here's another song with a story behind it. First, when I was about to bring my wife over to Okinawa on my own, after trying for six months with my commander, I learned about stereo equipment and the difference it made in the quality of the music. When my wife made it over, I told her that we were going to buy the stereo equipment in pieces and she was hell bent on getting the old fashion console all in one with built in bar or whatever someone wanted to make of the free space with the sliding doors inbetween the two small speakers. One reason was her parents and my parents each had one and thought nothing could compare. I had a friend over in Okinawa that became my best friend. He hung around us since he didn't drive and my wife, me and him went all over the island site seeing. When I couldn't convince my wife about the stereo equipment, I ask my friend if he would bring his equipment over to the apartment in Awase and hook it up to try and convince her. He agreed and I remember helping him load all his equipment in my car. He had everything you could think of. Once we got the equipment all hooked up in the apartment, we set my wife in the middle of 4 huge speakers and then we started.
This was the song we went with:

When my wife heard the song, I can still to this day remember as if it just happened yesterday, the look on her face! Her eyes just about popped out of her head and her chin hit the floor and she said "It sounds as if they are right here playing it!!" I said "That's what I've been trying to tell you!". Needless to say, it was all going to be seperate stereo components and the all in one console was history. Then the fun part started, hunting for that perfect stereo that was with in our means which didn't come until after I made some rank.
Take care,
Jim

Gotta tell ya,
I had the Steppenwolf Live Double Album got it for Christmas when I was 14 from somewho who used to be my babysitter when I was younger. My mom was really surprised when I had her listen to the lyics of The Pusher. She looked at me and said did they say what I think they said? I said yep, and she said, don't let your father hear that! The babysitter and her parents lived above us. Never took care of the album and got to the point of not wanting to play it on my good turntable. Iron Butterfly- In-A-Gadda Da Vida, loved this song and still do. Kid down the street could play this on his drum set to a tee. Hair, always liked this song but never tried to get a hold of it.
Here's another Okinawa moment:
This is me, though you can't see me, I was driving up to the apartment in Futema. My wife had taken the picture from the walkway. I guess I was coming home from work. This was the first car I have ever owned and was a three speed on the column. I had to ask an E-6 if he would teach me how to drive it. A hell-of-a guy:scratchchin: just can't remember his name! I Kinda remember what he looks like but, not the name. Notice the the benjo ditches on both sides of the road? Well, yep, the one on the right of the picture I fell into...SIDEWAYS!!
Everytime I hear this song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t58y7SRmaoo
I remember my wife, my friend, and I were setting on a hill trying to make a right all the while I was trying to keep the the car from rolling back and not killing the engine because, it seems that back then they always managed to get so close to your back they could reach in and kiss the back of your head.
It was a sunny day and we felt care free. Don't remember where we were headed if nothing more than out for a drive.
Just wanted to share this with everybody, take care,
Jim
