Name one thing on how the US contributes indirectly to the Okinawa economy!

I just want to see how far this will go and I will start.

Rapes, theft, misc crimes and not to mention noise complaint lawsuits that contribute money to those working in the legal system here and the plaintiffs of course. :)

"Indirectly" meaning how the U.S. contributes to the Okinawan economy through means other than first-hand or as a matter of consequence? Hmm...

Laws. For example: America makes laws about things to govern the actions of their citizens. People from other countries think the laws good and sensible (hey, it happens) so petition their government to instate similar laws as applies to their country. Likewise, America may have an import/export law that another country must consider when trading with a U.S. company. The U.S. didn't impose these laws on the other country, but by creating the law indirectly contributed to the governing of another country, such as Japan and thus Okinawa.

I'd say the America directly gets countries to adopt similar laws as well. Like shroom have been legal in Japan forever and America sticking it's nose where it doesn't belong as usual pressured and puched Japan until they finally gave in and made them illegal.

$57 million awarded in Kadena noise suit

NAHA, Okinawa — A Japanese court here Friday ordered the largest compensation award ever in an aircraft noise suit, ending an eight-year battle by neighbors of Kadena Air Base.

The Fukuoka High Court’s Naha branch awarded 5.62 billion yen (about $57 million) to 5,519 residents who claimed their health suffered from noise stemming from the air base’s activities.

Applying pressure to get something done is still "indirectly" contributing to the doing. Actually writing the law and voting on it is directly contributing. And there are the symantics of a thing to consider after dissecting it to its minutia.

You can expect the Japanese stats to be along the same pattern, just 20 times fewer.

http://www.palinrapekit.com/

According to national data:
National Rape Statistics

In the United States, over 70% of all rapes go unreported. (1)

The United States has the highest rate of rape of any country that
publishes such statistics; 13 times higher than
Great Britain and 20 times higher than Japan. (2)

In 2000, there were 261,000 victims of rape, attempted rape or sexual
assault. (1)

Of these 261,000, 114,000 were victims of sexual assault, 55,000 were
victims of attempted rape, and 92,000
were victims of completed rape. (1)

So in 2000 there were 92,000 reported cases of rape. Given that it's estimated only 25% of victims report the crime we can estimate that nearly 400,000 cases of rape occured.

yes but this based in the US...now if you show me the figures of japan..better yet Okinawa then it would be more rational......the only reason the numbers would be lesser than the US is simply due to population size......but take those number from Okinawa only since this is the area concerned and the topic of the OP.......

There have been several controversies concerning the word "niggardly", an adjective meaning "stingy" or "miserly", in the United States due to the phonetic similarity to the racial slur "nigger". The two words are, however, completely unrelated.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Controversies_about_the_word_%22niggardly%22

Word origins

"Niggardly" (noun: "niggard") is an adjective meaning "stingy" or "miserly", perhaps related to the Old Norse verb nigla = "to fuss about small matters". It is cognate with "niggling", meaning "petty" or "unimportant", as in "the niggling details".

"Nigger" derives from the Spanish/Portuguese word negro, meaning "black", and probably also the French nègre, which likewise has become a racist insult in American culture, deriving from negro (the ordinary French word for "black" being noir). Both negro and noir (and therefore also nègre and nigger) ultimately come from nigrum, the accusative case of the Latin word niger, meaning "black".

Like no shit....Japanese wives,

One, I apologize first here but this REALLY sounds dense of you. Japanese spouses ok, my wife is Japanese and there is no way in hell she would have her baby on base. You know why? She can't I'm not SOFA.

Very easy reply here.......

Next, traditionally the US hospitals discharge mothers after having their babies, if there are no complications, after 2 or 3 days. I know my first daughter was born at the Naval Hospital at Cherry Point, NC.

Japanese hospitals keep new mothers for 7 days, for a normal cervical birth, and up to 2 weeks or more for c-sections.

It's a no-brainer from the mothers point of view as to why they go off base. The care is OUTSTANDING depending on the hospital.

Oh I know that too, my two sons were born at two different Japanese hospitals.

Oh and from what I have heard, not too many Doctors on base speak Japanese too well to be able to communicate in the Japanese patients native language which while not 100% necessary is surely a benefit for the patient as well.:scratchchin:

Calm down...
My comment was not meant to be negative. Like all the other post and maybe that is why you are reacting the way you are.
I am speaking of those that are SOFA status dependents that choose to go off base. The hospitals still have to get paid....
The service may be better off base and I am not denying that. So are the clubs.
But that is money going to Okinawa from US personnel. That is what this thread is all about. Right?

Well your OP and the initial response from you on the reason for the thread is was very vague.:scratchchin:

So just to keep the money in circulation amongst the Americans people should have to suffer poor service, etc etc etc?

What's your point besides money? People make decisions all the time like this.

Is everything in your closet made in America?:scratchchin:
Edited to add.....
If you are going to look at that then I think you should also consider how much money is going from Japan to the bases and which is higher.

I would venture a guess and say the the money that the Japanese government spends, from infrastructure, maintenance, pay and allowances, off base and on base construction, etc etc etc, far outweighs the amount of money that the US government employees, meaning the military and all SOFA use while they are here in Okinawa.

However, these things you list above still generate money for Okinawans (contractors, construction workers, etc.) as a direct result of the bases being here. Whether the money comes from bonafide Americans or the Japanese gov't is irrelevant. Just playing devil's advocate.

If I last long enough, I may just get to read a farewell speech that comes close to matching this classic. Not sure his first Xmas sayonara quite matched up...

So just to bring this thing back on course, you can't beat used cars. I mean, where else is there such a demand for used cars? Hell, I'm driving a car that's ten years older then what I drove in the states.

I drive a car 10 years older than my oldest child....and she'll be in college soon!

What do you suggest, Muku? The powers-that-be merge all my identities into this account? Or merge everything back into eel? Or are you happy just leaving it as it lay right now? You seem to have SOMETHING you want to get off your chest...

So, anyhow, looks like what Muku is really trying to say is that nothing gets by him, and that when he catches something, he has some pull with the admin to make things happen. I guess we could call him the JU ombudsman.
