The game has been called "the most dangerous game on the market" by addiction therapists, after a 15-year-old Swedish boy collapsed and went into convulsions earlier this month.
His family rushed him into hospital where doctors diagnosed an epileptic-type seizure brought on by sleep deprivation, lack of food, and too long a stretch of concentrated game playing.
Sven Rollenhagen, the author of the report from Sweden's Youth Care Foundation, said: "There is not a single case of game addiction that we have worked with in which World of Warcraft has not played a part.
"It is the crack cocaine of the computer gaming world. Some people are literally unable to drag themselves away and will play it till they drop."
The Swedish National Institute of Public Health has backed the report, adding: "Computer game addiction is becoming more widespread in Sweden and across the world.
"There is no known medical diagnosis of conditions brought on by excessive game-playing, but it is clear they have a very powerful addictive hold over many people who use them."
The boy has made a full recovery, but his father has now launched a campaign to warn other parents of the dangers of marathon game sessions...

Wasn't this happening in China with a different game years ago? I remember reading of other cases like this somewhere else in Asia. People really get into these games. I've purposefully avoided WoW.

I heard a similar situation occured in South Korea with the interent and gaming in general. People just couldn't unplug. I can understand it to a point, like weekends and holidays when you don't have to work or go to school or whatever it is people do in the real world. heh. Anyway... to avoid eating, sleeping and basic hygiene care is kinda crazy, like an online cult. :p
Nice WoW art though. :thumbup1:

Nice WoW art though. :thumbup1:

I think the incident you're talking about is this one (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4137782.stm).
A South Korean man has died after reportedly playing an online computer game for 50 hours with few breaks.
Ah yes, Starcraft :)
The man, identified by his family name, Lee, started playing Starcraft on 3 August. He only paused playing to go to the toilet and for short periods of sleep, said the police.
Not the last time someone in South Korea died from marathon gaming apparently.

My brother is in that similar situation right now. My mother and I have tried intervention, but she doesn't have the heart to disconnect the internet. I told him he was on the WoW diet, he lost 20 lbs. just playing for 3 months straight.
It's sad to say that we need to intervene, but when you come home from work, come straight in to open your laptop play for several hours, take a shower, go back to playing, then being made to eat while playing (by myself or my mom), then being told it's almost 11 o'clock and you have to be up in less than 5 hours, so you finally force yourself off to sleep for a few hours and get up and do it all over again. Granted it doesn't sound as bad on here, but it's worse to witness it.
Maybe try not intervening. Let him go nuts for a few months on the game. It'll get old. I used to play the hell out of ffxi. Now I get bored after about an hour or two.

It's been almost a year and a half....now he's talking about building a computer just for the game.....
I had a computer built just for ffxi, lol. I use it for other things, though, but my laptop wasn't cutting it!
Is he dying? Losing his friends? Losing his job? Or just playing too much? If it's the latter, hey, everyone has obsessions. Some people watch too much tv. I can't even watch more than 20 minutes or so of TV in one setting anymore.

Dying? Technically, no...but he's been put on meds for depression.
Friends? He has none, he lost those a while ago.
His job, I got him...so he better not lose it.
Hehehe, well, you're his sis so you know him best. It annoys the hell out me me, though, when the wife tells me I'm playing games too much. She hasn't brought that up since I started (and finished) my latest degree... I win. :D

I'm his sis, so he thinks I should be supportive, I never thought that our fights would be started over a video game after the age of 10. However, I guess that's not the case.
We tell him he plays too much, when we're on a family outting and it's bored he gets cranky and wants to go home so we go home and he just jumps right on there. Of course I tried helping/bonding with him by making an account on there (I've used it....10 times in the past year) but alas, games are not my forte so he gets mad and leaves me with his friends who suck as well...so I gave up on that one.
Yeah, I tried to get my wife to play my game, but she's more into cute games like Dragon Quest (which I also enjoy). Meh, I don't know. I get irritated when people say people play games too much or should be outdoors more or should be socializing or whatever. I'm an indoor type. I'm a hermit type. I'm not so social (unless I'm drinking). I don't like fishing. I don't like gardening. I don't like sunburns. I'm doing what I like to do. Granted, I do go out from time to time and get some sun or go do things with the family, but once the daughter is in bed and it's me-o-clock, I'm going to do whatever I want, and that usually is video games and beer.
Ever notice that those people who are constantly telling people not to play so much games are usually the ones who can't seem to figure out their way around a computer? lol. Not you, just an observation of mine. Might be wrong due to limited exposure, though. On the other hand, internet/game addicts are pretty tech-savy lol. Comes with the territory, I guess.

Oh, I'm not good at video games. I'm more of a net geek.
He's the same way, and it's good you're here to put it in that perspective, because he is more of a loner, but we don't feel it's healthy for him to sit in his cave all day long and think that's how normal people go on about their lives, the only responsiblities he has is to, pay insurance on his van, go to work, and pay his cell phone bill (which really serves no purpose, unless his van breaks down).
Those are the only things asked from him. We tell him to go take a college course, he gets mad and throws a big fit. We ask him to go to dinner with us, he tells us no. We ask him to watch a movie with us in the living room, he brings is laptop in there with him and blares his teamspeak during the movie so that we tell him to leave or put on headphones and the he gets upset because there is no purpose for him to be there then.
Those are just a few things, for a while he was bringing his laptop to work, but I ended that real quick. So did our boss. lol
I've been tempted to bring my laptop to work, but I won't. :D
Yeah, it sounds like he has more social problems than anything. His balance seems a bit off.
I dunno. You can't really force him to do anything (college, etc....). You can work on getting him to want to go, but why force it? Maybe he is just destined to be that fat dude on "Make Love Not Warcraft"!

As a programmer, I'm obsessed with the gameplay of games as much as I am with the story. I love how some games are put together. I get excited about the user interfaces and quality and fluidity of the video.
I don't know what to say about your brother, though. He's your family, I guess. If it were my son, I'd probably do the same thing--try getting him to play catch with me, go bowling, etc. But I never tell people my age that they shouldn't play more than # hours a day of video games. It's their life!

I told him he was gonna be that dude!! I knew it! LMAO!
All I can do as a sister is slightly nudge him in the right direction, support him, and be his cushion/translator when my mom is being a little harsh on him. I'd love to knock the crap out of him sometimes, but the only people benifiting from that would be the doctors we were paying to stitch us up afterwards. lol
As far as college, he doesn't want to go, but he has no motives either...I mean he has ideas of what he'd like to do, but he's put no effort into putting them into motion....we just don't want him to be the 30 year old still living with mom or the fat dude from South Park (one of the best episode IMO).
Ask him if he'd be interested in video game development! If he says yes, sign him up for some multimedia classes. Those are really fun and useful. People actually get paid to make games! I know, it's hard to believe! I'd love to be doing that, but I love what I do already. :D

I used to be hooked on Dark and Shattered Lands. Nothing but walls of text flying down the screen. :)
My very first game addiction was the original SimCity.

Sadly my addiction, for a week out of three months, is The Sims 2, I'll play for a week straight until I'm sick of it. I use to love SimCity though, anything Sim was great...I had them all.
My brother will find peace eventually. Thanks for the advice dk. :first:
