Hey I'm posting this for help regarding any job/work opportunities here in Okinawa. I'm from Australia and just moved to Okinawa in January of this year. I have a working holiday visa and have just recently graduated from university with a dual degree.
I would definitely love to hear from anyone who has any suggestions or advice regarding work opportunities that I would be able to do.
Problem: I do not speak Japanese (but I'm currently taking Japanese lessons with a private tutor). I can't drive so work would be great preferably around the area that I live - Chatan.
I'm considering teaching English. I've already found out how to apply for ALT positions. Does anyone know how I can go about applying to teach English for private schools instead? (i.e. not ALT or JET). Anyone know of any private schools I can contact? If you are an English teacher yourself, I would definitely love to hear about your experience and any advice that you can give me.
Apart from teaching English, are there any other work options for me?
I have a working holiday visa therefore I can legally work in Japan
Let me know!
Cheers!
Good luck. You'll probably be teaching English.
What are your degrees in?
You can usually find people and schools advertising for teachers in our classifieds at www.japanupdate.com/classifieds/english/ (http://www.japanupdate.com/classifieds/english/)
Good luck.

Sorry, but it's always strange to me when I see a Japanese with Brit or Aussie accent. I even spoke with an Okinawan who previously had one and they told me all other the students were like "Where the hell did you learn to talk like that?"

Well how about a Japanese person that has a southern or Cajun accent.:D.
That is freakier to me than an Okinawan with a Brit or Aussie accent, seeing as how I am pretty sure that more Japanese go to Australia or GB than the American deep south.

Iha-san, a gate guard at Foster, has a southern accent. I asked him about it once. He's half and went to Kadena ES for a while, but that didn't explain the accent. He shrugged and chuckled. That's it.
And sorry no I don't know what else you could get a job doing besides teaching nglish as you haven't said what it is you can do otherwise. :)
Don't know how this thread turned this way (Zero) but I think it's interesting when they grew up in South America (as allot have), and they have that strong South American accent and speak Spanish, or Portuguese and Japanese, and English.

Allot of these same people were posting on another thread something alltogether different. Yeah, I see how it is. There aint squat in Oki. Instead of teaching in Oki, the poorest prefecture in Japan, I would hit up the schools in the mainland. Try gaijinpot.com for starters, I know of legions of others as well. My advice is dont waste your time with any of it, but Im sure youll do otherwise.

Just rake sand on the beach at one of the resorts. It's fun, and you get to bang the Mainland tourists.

Beach combing is a different tradecraft than beach raking. Beach Raking is a far superior mode of sand maintenance

Yeah beach combing and banging sounds like a plan, if your not married to a JN. Once you get married, eventually she will find out. Some are ok with it, but most will go psycho. Also, youll run into the same problem that others here in the mainland have, that is unfullfilling jobs takes its toll on your self esteem (i.e. English teachers, clowns, hostesses etc.) so most burn out on it unless they become a professor at some uni. I know legions of them up here that would rather be doing something else. Short term, I say go for it, but have something else in mind for the future.

Aussie in Oki dude,
there is a catering company named Ceasars or some shit like that. They had allot of New Zealanders working for them maybe an Aussie or two as well. Check out gaijinpot.com. I recently saw a job ad there for them.

Beach combing maybe, but beach raking is about the most fulfilling job in the world, right Sex Wax?
