Hi to all,
Back when I was stationed in Okinawa from '75 to '77, my wife and I bought a weekly magazine called "Okinawa Passtime". We kept the issue of the last week we were on Okinawa June 19-26, 1977 Vol. 3-25 and was wondering, after all these years, is the magazine still being published? I remember many a times looking at the ratings for the movies and making a decision from that wheather or not to go see that movie. Though there were several times we didn't agree with the ratings and came away from a movie disappointed.
Take care,
Jim

I thought the Okinawa passtime was sitting in a traffic jam on Sundays...

Here's an image of the "Okinawa Passtime" magazine that my wife and I bought I believe almost every issue. It's been a while and I could be wrong but did keep the last issue of the week and month we were on Okinawa.

Has anyone else ever see this magazine?

Jim

Maybe that is the predecessor to Okinawa Living that is still published.

Is there any info on the publisher in the magazine? I can't track down any info on Okinawa Passtime, except for personal articles here and there.

Hi Tan,
I wanted to thank you for your link. I have saved it in my favorites and I noticed a picture of Kuwae Army Hospital. That's where I worked while on Okinawa and I only managed to get one or two pictures of the hospital. I was wondering if you had anymore pictures and if you wouldn't mind sharing them. Also, I noticed the infamous "Benjo Ditches". I actually fell in one of them. They were a lot smaller and were on the sides of the road and not covered. Some places had covers for them as I can remember but unfortunately for me this particular spot wasn't. It was raining and my wife was carrying an arm full of library books and I was carrying 3 cases of beer for an up coming party. I came up to the side of the benjo ditch and road and went to step up. The benjo ditch and road was running downward at about a 45 dregree angle. As I went to lift my other foot off of the ground, I slipped and fell sideways into the benjo ditch. My wife dropped the books in a puddle of water and ran to my rescue. She had thought I hit my head but didn't. No beer managed to make it in the ditch as it was only me. I think I managed to mention every cuss word in the English Dictionary and probably then some. I had to throw out my clothes I was wearing and can't even remember how many times I had to take a bath in vinegar to try and kill the smell. Though I was none too happy about it when it happened, we all had some laughs come the party night. I wish those days were back and could freeze time so that nothing would change and we could once again be care free with nothing but the simpleless of times as they were with my wife and I from '75 to '77. I some times wish we had never left Okinawa.

As for the "Okinawa Passtime" magazine here's what it says on page 1:

Publisher --- Kobundo Co, Ltd.
The address shows --- P.O. Box 102 Ginowan City
with a telephone number of 09889-7-2147

Take care,
Jim

Was it written only in English?

If there was Japanese as well would you be able to scan that in here?

I can tell you that they no longer publish "Okinawa Passtime" in Okinawa. It was the brainchild of one of my dad's diving buddies while we lived there (1969-1979). His first name was Barry Stier, a civilian living in Okinawa... that is about all I know. I know that I had a delivery route at one time for them and my dad did a photography article since he taught photography at the USO and Both my dad and Barry were trying to develop a certain kind of underwater camera case together. I have a few pages and covers of them myself (Kubasaki addition and one where a research paper I did in high school science was published).

oh Geeze...I have lots.....I lived there (AF brat) for 10 years total...two tours of 5 years with a stretch in New Mexico in between. We left Oki after my sophmore year in HS. I can scan a few if you want them.....some are in not so great shape either. I can also scan the OKINawa passtimes that I do have for you!! They would be circa 1976-9 or so.

No. Don't. I joined one of the Facebook "Okinawa" blogs, and all I got was like 75 Okinawan chicks asking if I knew so and so and where they could get abandoned kid benefits. Many of the girls said they met guys at Club Red and Utopia, or other Hip Hop clubs, and the guys were cool, until the chicks got pregnant. Then it was a no-show. Or the guys said they were being sent to Iraq, when in reality, they just went home to the States.

Strange huh?

I can't see people coming to Okinawa, getting "yellow fever", and just bailing on chicks when they get pregnant.

And for some strange reason, most of the girls met their future impregnators at Rap/ Hip Hop clubs.

I blame Obama. All the local chicks say he's hot.

I think there is a conspiracy at play here.

Despite the humor at the end of the post Sex Wax, I can definitely see what you're describing as happening very often. Chicks in general (not just Japanese) need to understand that 90% of the time, guys go to clubs in hopes of getting laid at the end of the night. Why else are they dressed their best, so they could dry-hump their other guy friends and go home feeling buzzed? No way.

Really sad when the girl gets pregnant from who they think is an awesome stud, only to get stood up later. Hope those kids grow up safe, then come visit daddy to stomp his face in later in life. Both parties are guilty, the guy for being an irresponsible P.O.S and the girl for not thinking ahead.

Like I say if there were no child support laws and women had it in the back of they're mind they could he raising the kid on their own I think they'd be more careful. Yes I k ow it takes 2 but I'm just saying.

Isn't it funny though how when women want child support "it takes two to tango" yet when they want an abortion "it's their body their decision".

Food for though. Meant to be provacative.

More importantly don't forget to groan.

I remember Okinawa Passtime when I lived there the second time ('79-'81). The third time I lived there ('86-'88), I remember This Week On Okinawa. I may still have some issues of both, I'll see if I can find them. Debbie, if you have pictures, please post them. Thank you.
