When one thinks of firefighters rescuing cats that get stuck in trees, one usually imagines that they would make use of their extra-tall ladders. That was not the case in Okinawa yesterday, where firefighters were summoned to rescue a cat that had been stranded at the top of a 15-meter tree for four days.

The firefighters first attached ropes to the tree and tugged them back and forth to shake the cat out of the tree. When this failed, they whipped out a chainsaw and cut down the tree:

The top of the tree came tumbling down with the poor cat still clinging to its branches. But don’t worry, children, the cat was “safe” (and has since been hospitalized for a broken leg).

Such a stupid reason to cut down a tree and the cat ended up with a broken leg. Sorry, if I was the owner I would have just camped out at the bottom of the tree with some Meow Mix. It would have to come down sometime.

An airsoft gun would have persuaded that cat to come down real quick like:D

Not like the owner couldn't have just picked up one of the strays that roam the street.

o_O I find it funny that they first shook the tree and the dang cat will probably do it again one day. LOL! That cat looked freak the heck out too. Won't a cat eventually come down out of a tree when hungry enough?

Couple odd things about this news bit. One, it looks like they put some sort of mat at the base of the tree to help break the fall, but didn't take into account the arc in the path of the falling treetop. You can see the cat misses the mat by quite a bit. Second, the phone and electric and cable companies all got cherry-pickers, why not the FD?!

Should have used the fire hose, that cat would have been out of there real quick.

My dog got loose one day, and it was a fiasco. Fire dept., police dept., animal control, housing office, the housing owner, and all the neighbors trying to "catch" a dog that didn't leave my yard.

Overkill seems to be the norm.

That is so damn stupid! To hell with that cat! You're gonna divert firefighting resources away from actual emergencies, risk that guy injuring himself with that damn chainsaw or being hit by falling debris, just chop down the top half of the tree, which you now have to clean up, and the cat still falls the entire distance to the ground...pfft!

Guess that kind of reasoning and logic is why Okinawa would rather have golf courses and hotels than the jobs and revenue from the bases.

How many cat skeletons do they find in trees? They could have gotten the rock throwing Marine's kids to knock the cat out of the tree. The cat would be rescued, and the kids could write it off as community service.

Where are the protests for the disregard of the health of the tree? Maybe the cat was sitting in the tree as a form of protest against deforestation. Tree huggers world-wide should be outraged !!!!!

When I read this, I first imagined the wrestler "The Rock", tossing dependant toddlers at cats. :w00t:

Well, I guess the chainsaw was the only chance they had left after the real first attempt failed

A pellet gun would have been just as effective at removing the cat from the tree!
