I was supposed to do that dance with my brother-in-law at my other brother-in-law's wedding in fukuoka. But his wife's family was weird so all the brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, cousins, and myself from our side of the family got up and sang this one instead.....even had our own sanshin player:D

My wife says its a monkey dance in celebration of the year of the monkey. The banner at the top says year of the monkey, and that was 6 years ago. The monkeys behind the dancers should also give you a clue. Maybe someone wanted you to make a monkey out of yourself at the wedding.

よきょう, side show, entertainment PChan.... that is what it was supposed to be.

It doesnt matter about what the year was, even though Don's explanation is on the mark. Okinawan weddings usually have family members, classmates, friends, relatives, do some kind of show while the people are eating the meal.

It is traditional for some people to do Ryukyu Dance, a Karate exhibition, some goofy play or something and at the end of the wedding before the final speeches the traditional, and for good luck as well, カチャーシーKa chiya shi.

Ask your wife about yokyou, I will bet that it is very likely that she has done it once at least for her friends or classmates weddings.

So that actual dance means nothing? I knew that it was for entertainment for but I thought there might have been some type of meaning behind the actual dance.

As far as year of the monkey goes, that has nothing to do with it.

Ever since I did the kajiyadefu for my own wedding people have been asking me to do stuff for their weddings. Which reminds me, I need to find my gold fans and hang them up on the wall:D

PChan the only thing that matters is whether people enjoy it and have fun. It is just a wedding, hell I have been to some where the people danced in thongs and bikini tops and almost noone seemed to notice.

The entertainment at an Okinawan wedding for many people is just like BGM or background music.

Oh and mainland weddings from what I hear are a hell of a lot more subdued than Okinawan one's.

I have done youkyo at a couple of weddings myself P, drunker than a skunk too I might add, but they were a blast.

Yeah they are and a lot smaller too. I don't think anybody understood the reason why we sang that begin song.

Oh I'll bet the people from Okinawa did.....and probably appreciated it too!

I'll bet too that if that were done here you would have the reception hall full of people singing along as well.

It's a great song to drink to and sing karaoke:thumbup:

Ain't that the truth! It was funny I glanced over at our table why we were singing it and her and her parents were singing along but everyone else had a blank stare. Even the bride made a comment like "why did they sing that?". Oh well, I was drinking too many beers to really care:thumbup:

Oh and I guess the name of that dance I was supposed to do was "yajikita" and if you do a search on youtube of yajikita it brings up what looks like an old tv show.
