hi everyone. I've looked at the Lester Navy hospital site but I couldn't find anything pertaining to my job abilities.
I've also heard of another hospital, Adventist medical clinic or something like that?
does anyone know what I'm talking about or have their website?
Do the OR's around okinawa hire civilian certified surgical techs?
I graduated 2 years ago and have been working steadily since, I would hate to lose my skills. It would also be hard to explain a 4 year lapse in my resume, lol. I would even take a sterile processing job, if they would hire me.
Also, how does one go about getting hired at the clinic on base? I looked at the kadena services page, but from what I've seen it doesn't pertain to healthcare, other then like, med or vet techs.
I can also work in dental offices, any type of surgical clinic, or a Vet office that performs surgery on the animals, or any place autopsies are done .
i come to the island in three weeks, I want to be able to work!
any info would help, please. :)
Thanks.

You can operate on me.
Navwife and some others here are/were affiliated with the hospital. If this thread dies, be sure to refresh it, so some of those people can see it and respond.
Adventist Medical Center in Okinawa (http://www.amc.gr.jp/dental/english/orthoeng.html)

Good luck because I'm sure you'll need it to get a job on base. I'd also imagine that you'd have to be fluent in japanese to work at a clinic or hospital off base.

thanks you guys!
I just found out they have some sort of training program at the redcross/[bluecross??] for dental assisting, and they hire them right after they are done.
So if they hire these people only after 6 monthes of school, I'm sure I could get a job because I already have training. :D

Bumping this because I found out they apparently ONLY hire people who went through that particular program.
Sigh... I really didn't want to work on teeth anyway.
So um. anyone heard of hiring civilian surgical techs in okinawa? :crying:
Will work for Monies..

All I'm seeing is their dental section when I go to the website. Maybe I'm not navigating correctly. They do other stuff too, right?
I'll call them when I get to the island in 8 days. :D

i dont see jobs pop open in your particular field very often...
i will say that getting employment here is not very hard when you have the qualifications and experience.. problem is when you are very specialized and only want to work in that particular field you are limiting yourself...
my advice would be to get here.. try to get your foot in the door and take a high visibility job that gets you out and about.. network from there develop a reputation and than make the move to what you really want to be doing once you see the opportunity.
Yes. I know. that is one thing about my job that is highly irritating, I really can't do anything outside of surgery, clinical assisting, or autopsies. (can work on animals too). When I am having to relocate to an area where opportunities are not as prevalent in the US, it causes problems. :crying:
I would be willing to work anywhere in the medical area (except for insurance or clerk work, blah ) just to get a foot in the door.
but, I will not work a menial job when I actually have real skills and knowledge. I told my husband if I can't find a real job within the first year I am going to back to school full time. He's fine with it. <3

My advice is stay where you are if you can. Jobs (especially like what you're looking for) are going to be damn near impossible to find.

Don't listen to him. He's a disgruntled old man and he's barely 27. :P
There are plenty of jobs for those who know how to work...you already know that. Like PJ sez, you have to be flexible and well-rounded to work, but you seen intelligent enough to easily handle that...
Surgical tech? Is that like IT with a knife? And you're a woman? That both scares me and excites me.

Are you saying that the empoyment market in Okinawa is not suffering? Local Okinawian Government thinks otherwise.
"Governor Nakaima is the successor to Inamine Keiichi, the first Okinawa top executive throughout Okinawa's postwar history to approve the establishment of a new U.S. base (albeit under the Tokyo government's pressure). In his election campaign, Nakaima pledged to reduce Okinawa's unemployment rate — the worst in Japan — at least to the national average, to use returned U.S. base sites effectively, and to promote industries with a focus on tourism. As regards the base issue, Nakaima, toeing his predecessor's line, promised to oppose the current version of the Henoko base project (the V-shaped runways) in support of the Nago city-proposed movement of the location of one of the runways in the direction of the sea. He also asked for the closure of the Futenma Air Base within three years."

Not just you. Your husband too. With all the negative pressure on US military these days, it's effectively like trying to climb on board the Titanic.

Zim, STHU. Just because certain people may not fit here in Oki, does not mean it will not work out for others.
PM, if you are polite, mind your own business, and do not get into to trouble while out and about traveling the island... you WILL have the time of you life here!

I'm not saying that nobody will enjoy it. But can you honestly tell me that you have never felt any repercussions from the stupidity of others?

You can suffer from the stupidity of others no matter where you go. That's a fact of life from the time you are born until the day you die.

Ok Zim, we all know you hate people and everything and think that service members shouldn't go overseas with their dependants. But for one second maybe you should look at things from a different perspective? Do you know how being away from one's family effects moral? Even more so when the one's you're separated from are your spouse and children. Just because something like that might not effect your moral all that much that doesn't mean it should be the standard, that's very selfish IMO.

Of course you do! But that's not reason to keep people from enjoying their duty station and trying to be a positive example for the local populace. We all know there are only a handful of idiots and we all know that those idiots will get more attention than the people who do the right thing. However, that doesn't mean people should just give up and say "oh well" because they're being punished for the actions of a few morons. If anything it should motivate you to watch your own ass as well as the asses of your own people and strive to set a better example.

Cripes almighty dude, did you grow up under a rock in bum **** nowhere? :scratchchin:

I wish I could give you ten thanks for this post.
However I fear that the honesty and straightforwardness of the message will be lost on the person you are replying to here.
The other thing I would say is that one's suffering is in direct proportion to how much they personally allow it to affect them.
I believe in the phrase...If life is dealing you lemons, make friggin lemonade!:grin1: (Or something like that)
Even shit serves a purpose.....fertilizing my garden, but unfortunately I would have to print his shit out first before it would do any good, and I dont want to waste the paper!:D:p
