Here is a question for all you Okinawa history buffs. Where was Pinetree Air Base on Okinawa located? Attached is a list of Island Activities from the military newspaper Daily Okinawan published on 5 Mar 1946 which mentioned a USO show at Pinetree Air Base. A couple of years ago I saw one other reference to Pinetree Air Base on Okinawa, but no other information. I have tried Google search but no luck. In 1946 there were 9 named airfields on Okinawa. Did they change the name of one of the air bases on Okinawa to Pinetree for a short period of time and then back to its original name? The question is where was Pinetree located and during what period of time was it known as Pinetree?

The dark lines represent the airbases. There are 3 bases that we know of for sure,
but there are 2 small lines on the east and west side of the island. There's another base to the far south just above IHO SHIMA.

Ok north to south, giving it a shot here. Yomitan then Kadena, if memory serves me correctly back then Yomitan was the larger of the two fields.
Ok going south next to the Yonabaru Ko (Port) would be the Hameda Airfield in what currently is the Town of Yonabaru back then it was a part of Ozato Village for administration purposes, and then due east the Machinato Field where the current Camp Kinser is.
Going further south by Naha Ko is the Naha Airfield, now known as Naha Airport.
And the one farthest south would be the Itoman Airfield I think, it may have had a different name like Miwa or maybe something different.
On and the name Pinetree Air Base (Edited out my original thought here....)Not sure.
Maybe Ryukyuboi would know, he has been here since the last King of the Ryukyu's and Perry's landing so he might know.:D j/k rb.

Here is a 1946 map that I have that shows the 9 named airfields that I know about. I am guessing that one of them might have been called Pinetree for some short period of time.

I don't know the answer, but those maps are really cool! There sure were a lot of cemetaries back in '46. What did they do with all of their contents in later years?

Ok first in reply the one's I named were the one's from Rudel's map, the one I called Hameda AF is Yonabaru. Thanks for that one.......there was a base there called Hamada back then though, I guess the AF was named for the village.
The American Cemetery is next to Tomari Port, it was built back in Commodore Perry's era.
what about the b-17 service strip at OKuma?
Wasnt that built like way after the war? Even the iron-wood tree's up at Okuma were from what I have heard were planted by the American military during the occupation of the island.

LMAO! Yeah. I used to work there. They we used to drag race there. Then they closed it and added a mile of dirt and killed the reef outside of it and we now have "shoppes" to go to as well as housing.
So...yeah. :)

I remember a Hamby airfield in the 60's. It was on the ocean side of highway 1 (59 now)

yeah there was a hamby airfield...what I think is interesting is that there are no complete records of all the airfields here ............you can get an old 1:50000 or maybe a really old JOG air, they may show up as auxiliary airfields or closed.
