Personally, I still like hating Black people though. It's so un-PC, that now you can really get a lot of milage out of it. And counting how many Y plates I see speeding down my road on a daily basis doing 80kph or faster (The road in front of my house is a school zone), there is no excuse. Those people should have their licenses revoked.

We had a lot of strays and some of them were actually pretty cool. But occasionally we would have the same problem with people hitting cats on the street that leads into our old apartment complex in sunabe.

Never been in any sort of traffic incident until that happened.

I know good and well not ALL Y platers are bad drivers. I know good and well there are some pretty shitty Japanese drivers (they're all Red/Green colorblind it seems), BUT from what I've seen, the smallest portion of the population (SOFA) seems to cause the most problems on the road. But dude, just a friendly note, you sound as if you are in desperate need of a good dose of fiber.

Please, report everyone who runs afoul of your traffic sensibilities, the law etc, but dang, tone the hatred down a 1000 or so.

Not trying to be condescending, but hell, people probably have hated me for one traffic infraction or another. (lack of turn signals use on 58 near the now odd Kadena rotary, speeding on 58 north of Yomitan, quick lane changes etc) That whole rote memory of my route thing probably will bite me in the ass sooner than later. That's 8 years in as a Y. (no accidents or infractions) I know people here who have 20+ yrs as Y's or kanji spouses. We all pull the bone headed thing once in a while. Most of us know the Japanese rules of the road, since we took the test 9 zillion years ago when it seemed to be more specific, but I could be wrong. Other than that, we are just trying to get to our destination. No harm, no foul for 99 % of us.

Granted- anything involving kids is wrong. Whether running them over, nearly broadsiding them or the crossing guard, or letting them bounce around the back seat while negotiating the expressway.

You are honestly trying to provide a service. In my opinion, you need to be more customer service oriented. A bit less hatred towards your fellow man will help enormously.

"kana" plated drivers know how to navigate the roads. They've done this all of their lives. Y-Plates loose common sense, once their tires bounce over the speed bumps while leaving base.

Maybe it is pure luck who knows but one thing I would be willing to bet though is that in comparison to just about any city in the US of comparable size to the island population of Okinawa there are yearly less accidents, less injuries and less traffic fatalities.

Generally speaking here driving through school zones during set hours is prohibited in many areas and some local PTA's have gotten very vocal with the local police and gotten them to crack down on violators and in some location actually close off certain roads to thru-vehicle traffic.

The ones causing problems who are not testosterone filled punks are the ones who think that they can keep driving like they are in the US and that they shouldn't have to follow Japanese rules (not like they know and understand them anyway because all they have to do is take a quiz)...you know the type (generalizing here), DoDDS teachers, dependants who are counting down the days until they can shop at Wal-Mart, and McCain voters:rolleyes:. Sorry the traffic is so bad...I hate it and bitch about it too, but stupidity and machoism are not excuses for putting other peoples' safety at risk.

I tried to find some official numbers for traffic incidents, but could only find general crime stats (which were surprising...). I'm genuinely interested in this and would like to know how my observations relate to the official stats. Do the police even track that kind of information?

if by navigate you mean they know directions. all that shit that i typed has nothing to do with "navigating". so, because they've been driving here all their lives, does that make tailgating, cutting others off, driving with no tread on their tires, and driving with phones by them safe? you just love to bash y plates. often, you're right. but often, you are not.

you are clearly blind if you can even attempt, no matter how feebly, to claim that a HUGE number of Okinawan drivers don't "lose" common decency, respect, and sense when they get behind the wheel.

example: a woman is in front of me, kana plated, and she suddenly gets a phone call. she slams the brakes (I was between 3 and 4 seconds behind her), hits the blinker and pulls over to the "side" of the road. the problems were a) there was no shoulder. it was solid white line, with a curb within 6 inches of it, b) she did this right in front of an EMPTY PARKING LOT. now you tell me, how much damn common sense does that take?

so many okinawans turn into a**holes behind the wheel. so do many americans, but damn, for a culture that claims to hold the respect of others in such high esteem, they sure do crap all over it on the road.

This is all true. But I still believe Okinawa has better drivers than the Y-plates. I've been driving here much longer than you have, which is why I always allow for additional time to reach my objective (final destination). I never even attempt to drive under the influence, and I approach corners with caution. You can't begin to imagine the number of times when I almost hit someone on a blind corner. They'll stop anywhere at a moments notice.

Y-plate drivers tend to think that local laws do not apply to them. They do not need to use turn signals, and they automatically think that if they get hit, it's the Okinawan who is at fault. It doesn't matter if they cruise along at twice the posted speed limit, eating behind the wheel, and talking on their cell phones, or watching "The Mummy Returns" on their monitors.

On-base, it's the same thing. The only time people complain about speed limits, is when they get caught. Yawn!!!!!:rolleyes:
